Ok, here's a Q&A with Marc Stein and David Stern. It's not that great a read, but the following jumped out at me:

As a lawyer, how concerned are you for Kobe? It's often said that you can't predict what might happen when you get in a courtroom.

Stern: That's correct. Whenever there's an indictment, you worry about the jury and the ultimate outcome. But we'll see. I don't want to go too much further but hopefully it will be resolved soon and favorably to Kobe.

um, let's favor our player a little more...

Ya think he cares if he's guilty or not?

What a fluff question. Has Stern really ever seen the inside of a courtroom? Being a lawyer certainly doesn't mean he has.

hopefully it will be resolved soon and favorably to Kobe.

ie Stern hopes that Kobe gets off even if he did rape the girl. To hell with justice, just give me my superstar.

exactly, LRB. that's how i took it as well. "let's forget that a girl was possibly raped... as long as kobe gets off scot-free, it's all good!"
