Jefferson signs extension with Nets- $78 million - 6yrs

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Associated Press
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New Jersey Nets made sure to keep Olympian Richard Jefferson.

The Nets and Jefferson agreed to a multiyear contact extension Thursday that will pay him $78 million over the next six years, helping making up for the loss of Kenyon Martin and Kerry Kittles.

"Richard's work ethic over the past three years has produced a significant development in his basketball performance," Nets president Rod Thorn said. "The Nets management feels very strongly that Richard will continue this upward spiral and be a cornerstone of this franchise."

Jefferson would have become a restricted free agent after next season.

The announcement comes just weeks after New Jersey was forced to sign and trade Martin to Denver rather than match a proposed seven-year, $90 million contract. The Nets would have had to pay Martin $23 million in salary and front-loaded bonuses had they matched a planned Nuggets offer sheet.

The Nets were further dismantled when Kittles was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers for a second-round draft choice.

Jefferson, entering his fourth NBA season, averaged a team-high 18.5 points and 38.2 minutes a game last season. He also averaged 5.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.12 steals a game, appearing in a career-high 82 games.

The runner-up for NBA rookie of the year in 2001-02, the 6-foot-7 Jefferson was acquired by the Nets in June 2001 from the Houston Rockets.

Jefferson is currently playing for the U.S. Olympic team.

Wow. Pretty hefty contract for a team that is attempting to cut salary.

Richard Jefferson is not worth that. I could've only imagine this year's Suns as the only other team dumb enough to pay him that.

you must've missed a chunk of last season when RJ was a one man team..he was putting up close to triple double numbers in every game..and he shoots 52%

he is certainly worth it

How the hell is he not worth it? Did you see any of the other contracts this offseason?

That doesn't mean he's worth it just because other idiots are giving away hefty contracts. Tim Thomas, Finley and Allan Houston all get paid like superstars. That doesn't mean their worth their respective contracts.

This is a pretty hefty contract to play for a role player. I'd be trying to pay that money to someone I could try and get to be my centerpiece of my team. That wasn't Kenyon Martin and it sure as hell isn't Jefferson. He's a great role player but in my eyes he's just another oen of those guys that Kidd helps look great on the court.

like I said earlier, did you even see the games that RJ played without martin and kidd last year? he was putting up close to triple double figures and all the games were going down to the wire with a supporting cast of rodney rogers, kerry kittles and jason collins...this includes a game with the mavericks

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3523/gamelog

look at the month of march..he IS a SUPERSTAR...he has been overshadowed by martin, who is a role player and kidd

and the numbers he was putting up sure as hell are worth the money he is getting paid

please watch the games before you blatantly come out and make statements

some of those other players you mentioned aren't even in RJ's league..those guys had pretty dumb reasons for their contracts

tim thomas - because he was 6th man of the year ; totally dumb
allan houston - a couple of good playoff games, basically a spot up shooter; another dumb one
michael finley - to prove that dallas is a good place to play and that cuban is the owner that everyone wants to play for; reasonable, given the circumstances

rak, that's very misleading. That chunck of last season was when both Martin and Kidd were hit by the injury bug. There were only 4 games where he scored 30, and two games when he led his team in rebounding. Statistically, he's not that good of a passer and an average rebounder. The only reason he averages 49-50% shooting is because of Kidd.

I forgot teams overpay for average players.

Hell Marquis Daniels had been scorching the league for more than 4 games. I guess he's a superstar too. I know why the guys got those bad contracts. You are making the same mistakes all of those other gms made. They play great for 4 games so they deserve max money. That's why the Jim Mcilvane's and Kandiman's are laughin their asses off all the way to the bank. Okur and Turkoglu will be the next ones running.

it has been widely said that marquis daniels is the steal of this year's free agency....he is on the same level as RJ except for his shooting % which i think will improve

i don't think putting up 24,5,5 for a month is "playing great for 4 games"....again if you bothered to read my post before you replied, you would've known that

Well its all relative if you ask me. IS Kenyon MArtin worth 15 Mil signing bonus which is more than MJ's signing bonus - No. Is it the smart way to do it- yes.

If Adonal Foyle can get 50 Mil - 3ppg 3rpg RJ deserves it.

I'm shocked that anyone is still paying shooting guards or small forwards big money. Those guys are available every year at reasonable prices. The only players who should get more than $7-8M a year are power players and point guards. The Spurs are obviously ahead of everyone else on this - Ginobili signed his contract for about $52M for the next six years.

Manu is nice...but not worth any where near that much money.

Uhhhh.......Hello. Not only did I read your post but I replied to it. And i'd love to hear who in the hell is saying Marquis is the steal of the free agency. I haven't heard anyone complain about it but I sure as hell haven't heard anyone say he was the steal of the free agency. When you say widely said that Marquis was the steal of the draft are you referring to this messag board? I think you could argue that title goes to Brent Barry.

Adonal Foyle for one thing is a big man but he also doesn't deserve his contract. Like I posted above just because you see someone else getting a ridiculous contract doesn't mean it's a good contract for a player doing just a bit more than that player is doing. Kenyon Martin was highly overpaid too but I can't fault them forgiving him the contract. It was what they had to do.

brent barry? are you kidding me?...the guy is 33 years old...he'll be done in a year or two

daniels is young and locked in at a bargain price for the next 7 years
