NETS, PADGETT AGREE ON PACT

By MARC BERMAN

September 5, 2005 -- The Nets finally have their free-agent power forward.

In the wake of failed physicals by Shareef Abdur-Rahim and Robert "Tractor" Traylor, the Nets, according to a league source, have reached an agreement with Rockets free agent Scott Padgett.

Padgett, a career backup, must, of course, pass his physical this week. Padgett has agreed to a one-year deal at $1.6 million, plus a second-year team option the Nets likely will exercise.

The Post has also learned the Nets rejected Traylor due to a heart problem along the lines of Laker draft pick Ronny Turiaf. The Lakers rookie has an enlarged aorta and needed an operation last month. The Nets didn't want to take a risk on a player who might need surgery down the road.

The addition of Padgett, a sixth-year pro out of Kentucky, gives the Nets a big-man shooter off the bench, though he's hardly an athletic sort. But the Nets felt they needed another body off the bench who can make a 12-to-18-foot jump shot, as their attempts to land another legit shooting guard appear iffy.

Padgett averaged 4.2 points and 2.6 rebounds in 14.3 minutes last season. His buzzer-beater against the Knicks in January spelled the end of Lenny Wilkens' reign, as he was forced to resign 45 minutes later

He also "shun"ned the Suns. He gave them a verbal agreement.

Of course, then the Suns flirted with Finley so I don't blame him for sticking it to them.

Here's a nice checklist.

1) Would you like to play with a top-notch pointguard that will help you put up good numbers. If so, then rule out The Houston Rockets and move to question 2.

2) Would you like to play more than 8-10 minutes per. If so rule out Phoenix where you will play behind Amare Stoudamire, and sharing minutes with Briant Grant, Kurt Thomas and the Matrix.

At this point New Jersey is in need of a good forward. Marc Jackson can play some there, Cliff is good but will play limited minutes.

There will be lots of minutes at the 3 and 4 for Padgett if he can keep the opposing defense stretched out.
