Cavs Target Henderson
9th September, 2005 - 11:17 am
Beacon-Journal - According to league insiders, the Cavaliers top target is Alan Henderson. The 10-year veteran played last season with the Dallas Mavericks , where he averaged 3.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 52 games. He played the previous nine years with the Atlanta Hawks , where Cavs assistant general manager Chris Grant, a former Hawks executive, got to know him well.

The 6-foot-9, 32-year-old Henderson is known as a good mid-range shooter but, more importantly for the Cavs, an active rebounder. He was second in the NBA last season in offensive rebounds per 48 minutes.

Getting a player like Henderson became imperative after forward Anderson Varejao went down with a severe shoulder injury that required surgery last week. He might be out until February.

But signing Henderson might be complicated. The salary won't be: He'll get $1,138,500, the veteran's minimum, of which about $400,000 will be picked up by the league. However, Henderson was arrested July 2 at JFK Airport in New York for having a loaded gun. [READ

Alan Henderson Agrees To Join Cavaliers

10th September, 2005 - 11:05 pm

Plain-Dealer - Alan Henderson will become the latest free agent to join the Cavaliers. Henderson is expected to sign a one-year contract [veteran's minimum of $1 million] with the Cavs next week, according to several league sources.

Henderson, a 6-9 forward, will help fill the gap left open when Anderson Varejao dislocated his right shoulder last month while playing for Brazil in the Americas World Championship qualifying tournament. Varejao will be lost for much of the season and Henderson, a 10-year veteran, will try to maintain in the post.

Henderson, 32, averaged 3.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 52 games for the Dallas Mavericks last season. Before playing for the Mavericks, Henderson played his first nine seasons with the Atlanta Hawks . His best year was the 1999-2000 season. He averaged 13.2 points and seven rebounds per game.

Henderson, however, will have to deal with a major issue before the start of the season. On Monday, he will be in court facing charges of carrying a loaded gun in JFK International Airport two months ago. The gun was stored in a metal lock box in his suitcase. Henderson did not have a license for the gun in the state of New York.

Henderson, a 10-year veteran, was arrested on July 2 when he allegedly took a gun that was not licensed in New York to the John F. Kennedy International Airport.
