yeah I just read this and was about to post, I don't think it does anything significant in terms of hurting or helping the Knicks cause.. but its worth noting

I still don't know why the Knicks didn't use the new retirement "waive" on
him this season. They used it on someone else. Perhaps there is insurance
money that will kick in and cover part of his contract.

money that will kick in and cover part of his contract. this is exactly why they didnt use the waiver thing on him. because insurance picks up the tab now. so they got rid of two players without it costing them as much.

If its deemed medical retirement, I believe he also comes off the cap next year.
