View Full Version : Stats Question

Sorry for asking a stupid question ('cause it probably has been answered here previously - maybe even a few times?)...
0:02 103-104 Jerry Stackhouse misses free throw 1 of 2
0:02 103-104 Dallas offensive rebound
0:02 103-104 Jerry Stackhouse misses free throw 2 of 2
0:02 103-104 Dallas defensive rebound
Why is the team of the player who's shooting free throws credited with any rebounds at all?

Team rebounds are nominal stats that do not count towards a team's rebounding total. They are just there to avoid confusion so that every missed shot has a corresponding "rebound." The second one ("Dallas defensive") probably indicates that there was a loose ball foul.

I get the idea but still think it's odd.
Seems like an ill advised attempt to simplify the task of writing a software that automatically creates the stat-sheets out of the play-by-play text... take each shot as a "shot" in order to avoid to add another shot-type named free-throw1-of-2 without a following rebound. Then again you have the three-ball, 2pt shots and of course the free-throws.
So probably if a player is fouled in an attempt to shoot there probably also is a team rebound that doesn't count against the stats...
Sure it's a system that works (sort of), but it makes the play-by-play hard to read (which i hardly ever do anyway, so nevermind...).
