Kobe Bryant: Promises Not to be a Ball Hog This Year

RotoWire.com Staff - RotoWire.com
Saturday, October 14, 2006

Update: Bryant has pledged to make a "conscious effort" to allow other Lakers to pick up the scoring load this season, the Orange County Register reports. Bryant told the paper that the team's "evolution" this year is to be less dependent on his point production.

Recommendation: Whether this actually happens remains to be seen, though the addition of Vladimir Radmanovic adds a much-needed scoring option to the Laker roster. Given that Bryant accounted for a whopping 35 percent of the team's points last year, a slight dropoff from those numbers is quite possible.

I don't buy this for a second....

About F***ing time!!! And why not for the rest of his playing career? Maybe then a lot of people could learn to like him.

Didn't he put up like 6 or 7 assists per game? What is he going to do put up 14 lol? I'd like to think him being a ball hog benefits the Lakers more being there only solid player is Lamar Odom. Not much help in LA.

He averaged 4.5 assists last year. Compare that to attempting 27 shots a game, including 6.5 threes a game which he only shots at a 35% clip.

The Lakers average 80 shots a game, 27 of them by Kobe (34%) and he makes 35% of their points. He takes a third of their threes and about half their free throw attempts, as well as commits a 4th or their TO's.

He has the ball in his hands too much, and shoots too much. They need to spread the ball around more and open up shots for the other players. Odom, Radman, and Kwame isn't a horrible supporting cast.

Edit: Another important stat, Kobe attempts 27 shots agam while Odom attempts just 11.

This year they actually have a few more legimate scoring options than just Kobe and Odom. They brought in Radmonovic and Kwame is expected to be better as well.

I still think Kobe should take control of the offense whenever the hell he wants because really... you cant complain with the results. Seventh in a competitive west, taking the Suns to seven (and losing because Kobe didnt take any shots)? Hmmm... well lets put it this way, last year he had a right to question who he was passing to. This year he has gotten more team chemistry and added a solid scorer so he should feel better about giving up some of the load.

After all... he is the greatest basketball player in the NBA as of right now. All biases aside.

If this is true, this could be the first time in 3 years that I don't use my first fantasy pick on Kobe.

File this, along with Paris Hilton's one year vow of celibacy, as one of the most excessively broken promises made in 2006.
