PHOENIX -- Phoenix Suns center Kurt Thomas will be sidelined four to six weeks with an elbow injury, the team said Tuesday.

Thomas, who comes off the bench, hyperextended his left elbow in the first quarter of Monday's game at Memphis. He was examined in Phoenix and will wear a brace on his elbow to help it heal.

He is averaging 5.7 points and 5.7 rebounds this season.

The Suns will play at Houston on Wednesday night.

without his 6 points a game, they might only get 116 tonight

Don't underestimate what he does for them. He's their best low post defender, a solid rebounder and can knock down the open 15 footer when you leave him open.

Their defense went in the tank when he went downl last year. With Amare back I wouldn't expect the drop off to be as drastic but he will be missed.

What's worrying is that the Suns don't really have anyone but Pat Burke to back up Stoudemire now. That is, unless, D'Antoni decides to play smaller lineups while Stoudemire's on the bench, with Diaw at the C position.

My guess is that he'll just go small. Your defense and rebounding will suffer but you guys will still beat most teams on most nights.

The Suns are in a tight, tight, tight race for that #1 seed this year, and Kurt Thomas' absence may cost us a game or two. Luckily, him being gone won't cause the Suns quite as many problems as his foot injury at the end of last year did. Stoudemire's defense is improving rapidly, but our rebounding will definitely take a hit.
