View Full Version : Huge game for San Antonio tonight(Phx)

The pressure is on the Spurs. They are a great second half team and a great playoff team. Tim Duncan is really comming on but what about the bench? They are 6 games behind us. This is just how good and deep we are. They can't afford to get down behind us much more and Houston is only 2 behind them.

Nash(the mvp again), is going to try to cram the ball down their throat flying up and down the court. It is not as important for Phx but in a sense it is, home court and just saying, we can beat SA because SA puts them out pretty easily usually.

This will be a good game to watch and see if San Antonio has the heart they have always had. Ginobili and Parker needs to step up with Duncan. Amare has to be a force on Phx. Nash will be, he always is.

I watched Dallas last night and we are just to deep for teams. This is the best team we have ever had. Dampier manning the boards and shooting a high %. Howard out and lately George hasn't played all that good and then other night Croshere goes off. A Johnson played alot last night and when Dirk was off Stack was on and tthen the 4th Dirk took over. Terry made some big shots. Against Seattle Harris, Croshere and seems like another reserve had great games in which Harris is not reallt a reserve but against Miami we had no bench play last year.

No starter play either the last few games but this year we are way to deep for any nba team. Phx, Miami, Cleveland, MN, San Antonio and many more teams are having to work to hard in the regular season. Dallas is cruising and normally the Spurs do what we are doing and come playoffs, it will hurt the above teams i listed. Being deep is very important in the playoffs.

Can the Spurs win in Phx? They need this game badly.

They don't have to keep up with us at all, they just have to stay 3rd or 4th. They have to stay ahead of the jazz/houston basically. Now they didn't do themselves any favors losing to the jazz, but I'm sure they've given up trying to catch the mavs.

Too true. At this point it would take a miracle for the Spurs, and a disaster for the Mavs for them to catch up. They know that all too well; the Mavs just don't lose very often.

As for tonights game, I'm rooting for the Spurs all the way, although I'm not liking the odds. The fact is, it's the second night of a back-to-back for them (we all know how bad the Spurs suck on b2b's), they're on the road, and it's Phoenix. Maybe they'll be energized and determined after losing to the Boozer-less Jazz last night, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Janett_Reno

I agree to a point but that is dangerous play. It did work for Miami just quitin some games last year and then trying to turn it on when they had to. It was a miracle they beat us that way but it happened.

Houston is dangerous if Ming, Battier and McGrady stay healthy. I know the Spurs are great later in the year and Houston would have to play flawless but it could happen. The Jazz loss did hurt because Boozer was not in that game. Okur killed them. The Jazz should fall big time without Boozer but who knows.

This again is where Horry, Finley and Barry hurt San Antonio as they need young guns to try to catch us off the bench. They must make a trade to go younger and clutch off the bench. If not, they might wear Duncan, Gino and Parker out by the playoffs, like Nash will be.

I say they haven't give up trying to catch us but it will be hard because our bench is just to good. They can do like Miami and just say screw the regular season but make the playoffs and try to turn it on but that is dangerous play. It did work for Miami. To just get the guys healthy.

I would say the Suns need it just as badly, if not more. Like it or not, the Spurs are still contenders, and Phoenix has yet to prove itself against the "elite" teams. Maybe they will tonight... but hopefully not.

Battier has been the best signing for the rockettes in a long, long time. I imagine he brings a lot of professionalism and hard work to that locker room.

I really wish we could have swung a deal for him, I'd love him as a small forward and josh as a two.

Janett_Reno
02-01-2007, 07:03 PM
I do not blame Memphis getting Gay. He looked like he had stardom but will he? Battier is a Josh Howard but with not as much offense. He was great in the clutch shooting a 3 and winning a game for Memphis. Made huge defensive stops. He played Dirk and our guys hard but we would over power and over tall him.

He is like a bulldog and won't stop. He will rebound, hustle, plays defense and some games has some offense. He would have been a great fit here as he is in Houston. The guy from U of KY that played in the cba that houston got last year, i knew he was a bulldog also. He is also another rebounding defensive guy. If they keep on building this defense, smart play, and Ming and McGrady stay healthy, this team can be a dangerous playoff team.

I liked Battier also and it has hurt Memphis when he left.

So much for the theory the Suns can't close out games too. Amare was a freak tonight which I think helped them. Funny how he played even better once GROINobili pissed him off.

chum this is the 4th dumb statement you've made this night. If I was new and didn't know any better, I'd figure you didn't know anything about basketball.

Spurs are old and on the 2nd night of a back to back. They got exhausted at the end.. They wouldn't have been able to score against Duke with that little energy left in the tank. A second night of a back to back back against a run and gun team won't happen in the playoffs.

And remember THAT'S where teams like the 02 Mavs and this phx team are unproven, in the PLAYOFFS... not the regular season. Not sure why you think they got over some kinda "hump", esp since this just makes them 1-6 against the top teams. Hey, even the bobcats beat the spurs.. I guess that legitimizes their playoff potential.

dude1394
02-02-2007, 12:09 AM
We also need to remind ourselves that this is the 2nd night of a b2b for the Spurs, something they've historically sucked at. The Suns, with 2 days of rest, should not gloat over winning this game, if they do. I honestly don't think this proves anything.

I think it proves the suns can beat the spurts.

The making the WCF two years in a row is misleading. They were very close to getting knocked out in the first round, and they would have lost in the second round if it wasn't for the screwed up seeding method. Instead they didn't have to play either of the the top two teams until the WCF and got to instead play a 7th and a 6th seed.

This is kind of weird to me. The mavs won their two home games and then diva won their three home games. Game 3 they surely would have liked to have had that one back. but how do you "choke" when you win only your home games?

I mean if we'd have won the game three then that would be a hell of a choke, but holding serve??? I don't get it.

Great win by Phx and again i feel San Antonio is sinking and some quick thoughts. San Antonio has held on to old for to long. Gino, Duncan and Parker are as good as anyone but you can't win anymore without a bench. Jacque Vaughn is terrible. Bowen is good on defense but he has lost a step there and his 3's are not falling anymore. Horry has been great in the past but father time has caught up and he can't play much longer. The Spurs must have production at Horry's spot. Bonner will help when he is back and Oberto is pretty good but Horry is a nothin anymore.

Finley looks older than Horry. He is just to old. Then it is Barry and he still can play but he isn't young. The Spurs have always crusied because their bench has always been good. Now the bench to me, sucks. What result will happen? Duncan had to play his heart out for a loss. Ginobili played his heart out for a loss. Parker was frustrated all night. What is happening is Pops has to be careful as he can wear those three out. The Spurs must make a trade and fill in for Horry's position. They need a shooter for Finley's position. That Udrich is pretty good and better than Finley but he didn't do much tonight. Jacque Vaughn is just awful.

With Phx, it is all out run and like i said before the game it had to be Amare and it was. This is their inside game and he is very good. Marcus Banks might be just a bit better than Jacque Vaughn but not by much. He can't play Phx style and he just isn't that good. Oh yes in college he was great but not now. Barbosa is good and is going to help Phx. You make Nash log all these mins and when it comes playoffs, he might be tired. I don't think Phx can beat the Spurs in the playoffs but i might be wrong. The Suns did good with opening the court up and running tonight and Pop did not stop it.

I don't think neither team can beat Dallas in the playoffs. San Antonio has a shot but not with Duncan, Parker and Gino wore out and no bench, will result in a loss for them.

Dallas bench is way to strong for all the nba. When a guy like Croshere can come in and get 34 and he hardly plays, when Harris can explode at anytime, two defensive big men we got and then every night it is Terry, Dirk and Howard. Our third string point guard is like an all star comparred to Jacque Vaughn or Marcus Banks. Our 4th string that scorred 40 something other night in the cba is lots better than Jacque Vaughn or Banks.

Avery was smart when he brought in George, Croshere, Johnson and Buckner. I really feel we are just to deep and that our team won't be wore down as much as Phx and San Antonio. The Spurs organazation is smart and they might pull off a deal and trade for someone to help them and take pressure off the big 3 but how can they move Horry or Finley and no one will take Jacque Vaughn. Teams do want Barry and last year they almost traded him but he is one of the few bench guys that still can play.

We are in good position in many ways.

Well you think they had a better roster but so did detroit. I thought that the heat played some hellacious defense on us and our roster couldn't hit an outside shot to save their lives. A lot like the spurts now. We've fixed most of that I think by getting guys who can.

But it's just weird.. What if they were playing 1-1-1-1-1-1-1. Then again game 6 would have been the winning one.

I don't think he hurts against the mavs quite as much as the suns. The mavs are so much dribble penetration versus steve pass penetration that I think he's useful against the mavs. Against the suns however I don't see who he guards. The spurs stopped attacking the basket. They couldn't stop Manu nor Parker from getting into the lane. Then all of a sudden, jump shot, jump shot. That allowed PHoenix to get back in the game then control it.

I don't understand why they didn't attack the rim more. Or maybe I do. I think they looked very tired in the 4th quarter and just settled for 3's. They outshot Phoenix from attemping 3pointers. You're not going to win doing that.

dude1394

It's about the quality of their 3ptrs. If they shove it to duncan and he kicks it out great. But if they are going to come down and in transition shoot 3s forget it. They don't have good enough shooters (except maybe barry/finley(not this year it seems)) to do that.

They sort of lost confidence that timmah could/would kick it back out. The suns were collapsing like crazy on him but they stopped going inside. It's possible the suns were stopping the inbounds pass but I don't recall that.

this is by FAR the most spiteful, hateful insulting NBA fansite that I've seen on the web. Bagging on other teams' fans is one thing, but you guys routinely bite each other's heads off over STUPID stuff. Dr Bio obviously gets off on being a total a-hole to EVERYBODY, including the people that consistently kiss his ass. Seriously - why doesn't someone just tell him to f@#! himself? EVER? Chumdawg has the patience of a SAINT.

Anyone who disagrees with the site bullies is a "troll". Anyone who criticizes the Mavs at all is not a "true" fan. Plus, you guys are insanely insecure as a fanbase, worried about every little comment by the media. Anything that can in the tiniest way be construed as a negative towards the Mavericks and you pounce on it.

The Mavs have a great team this year, they look like a clear frontrunner at this point. But instead of enjoying it, the members that dominate this board seem to be frustrated, grouchy SOB's.

Hate me all you want, call me an idiot or worse, but you people need to get over yourselves. It's just a freaking game. Have fun with it and stop being so God damn malevolent.

I would imagine their collective heads are exploding with the grim recognition that championships won in years' past do not guarantee championships in the years' future.....

It must be hard for them to ignore the staggering evidence that the Spurs are basically just three deep as a team (can anyone imagine jacques vaughn getting any non-trash minutes coming off the ostensibly weak bench of the Suns???). I suspect the growing realization that the spurs are the new jersey nets of the west must come with great turmoil and anguish.

I think this site treats fans of other teams pretty well - better than I would if I were in charge. I think fans of other teams should hang out at the boards that are established just for them. And most team specific fan boards don't want fans of other teams hanging around - in fact, most will ban you instantly once you post anything that indicates your loyalty to another team.

There are NBA boards that welcome fans of ALL teams but those are probably too hot for you - if you get your panties in a bunch over US then you would never last a day over there.

So you shouldn't expect nice treatment here - a lot of us would prefer to see you gone. And why should you expect better? If I posted on a Suns board that I was a Mavs fan I would get hammered FAR worse than you get from here.

Really? Interesting.

I think you have a totally warped sense of reality. Please name the Suns board on which you would "get hammered"? The truth is, unless you go there and start flaming the team, you'd be safe as a kitten. THAT's what I expect here. I'm not trolling. I don't come in thumping my chest and making a spectacle of myself.

You're correct when you say that I get treated pretty good here - but I attribute that more to minding my manners than any self-moderation on your part.

As I've already said, I don't come here to start shit, I come to see a different perspective and I behave myself. That should be all that's required. Yet you'd prefer to "see me gone". Why, do I threaten you?

It's just a freaking GAME, not a gangland turf war. You have an amazing lack of perspective considering that you, as a mere fan, have absolutely ZERO influence on the outcome on the court.

You think it's cool to be openly hostile? I don't. If an opposing fan comes on your board just to start crap, you have every right to flame him back to the Dark Ages. But you guys attack ANYONE, including Mavs fans, who show even the slightest hint of objectivity. A guy is here for over two years, yet still has to field "lying troll" shots? Why would anyone even bother to check?

If you're shown respect, I think you're obligated to at least be civil back. This isn't a war and I don't see why you'd want to make it one.

And as far as "getting my panties in a bunch", I just thought this needed to be said. The way I see it is, maybe you guys just don't realize how bad it is because you're here all the time. So I was offering an outside opinion, which you of course shot down without hesitation. A lot of you are needlessly savage and insulting and that's a fact. If there are worse boards than this one, I don't want to go there. Not because I'm overly sensitive, but because I have no interest in flame wars.

As far as smack goes, I think I can MORE than hold my own. But it doesn't accomplish anything, so why bother? I just want to talk hoops.

I've said my piece, do with it what you will.

The Suns also started playing good defense. The Spurs only scored 34 points in the entire second half. The Suns started deflecting balls and got a number of steals. Then they switched defensive assignments on both Parker and Manu for the 2nd half which helped. Notice how Nash kept drifting to Bruce Bowan and that left Barbosa on Parker. Parker couldn't get around Barbosa in the 2nd half. That guy is freaking fast.

Don't think we should talk about choking or folding. A Finals berth is better then whatever Nash or the Suns have accomplished recently but still.. it's like saying "haha, your car has TWO flat tires." when your car has a flat itself.

Anyways, I still think the Spurs will be more of a playoff threat then the Suns but let's find out. The Suns are definitely becoming the darling and the team to beat in many people's eyes.

I can honestly say I love this board BECAUSE of the hostility to the other teams fans, it keeps the trolls at bay. There are general NBA boards but if you find this Maverick board so terrible why even bother coming here? I'm sure your Suns board has it's share of trolls and you should know by experience the vast majority are simply annoying homers with nothing better to do with their time.

On occassion an intelligent basketball fan of another team may come to these boards and it's great hearing from them but you can't really blame the regulars for being weary of a newcomer rooting for another team after dealing with so many trolls can you? If you want evidence of this you might want to check out the thread: 'suns' posted by your comrade Suns Rule!... they clutter our boards with this crapy. And you wonder why outsiders aren't openly welcome.

And for the record we are not "insanely insecure as a fan base", if you were here during the offseason months there was tons of criticism about our team. It's definitely not a huge Maverick love-fest you make it out to be. As for being insanely optimistic, what do you expect? We have the best record in the league right now, should have been here when we were 0-4 it was a lot different.

Why bother coming here? Because as I said, I take interest in the other guy's perspective. It's boring being around Sun's love 24/7. And like I said, trolls are fair game.

But even obvious non-trolls get mercilessly ripped. That's the part that I think is unnecessary. Your definition of troll is too broad. Fan of another team? Troll. Objective Mavs fan? Troll.

A troll's sole purpose is to disrupt the forum. Simply having a different opinion doesn't make you a troll.

If someone comes here specifically to cause trouble, ban 'em. Problem solved. Personally, I don't create threads and I don't make waves. If a fan of ANY other team comes trolling, I'm all for banning them, Suns' fans included. Let's face it - there are morons in every NBA city, even in *gasp* Dallas.

Who says you have to be openly welcome? I'm not saying you have to be all lovey dovey, but this shoot-first-ask-questions-later policy is the polar opposite of that.

And for the record we are not "insanely insecure as a fan base", if you were here during the offseason months there was tons of criticism about our team. It's definitely not a huge Maverick love-fest you make it out to be.

Every little perceived slight from the media is cause for it's own thread, containing at least a page or 2 worth of comments about "what a @#$! retard So-And-So is". The Suns get just as much stupid crap written about them. Do they get more national-level praise than the Mavs? How should I know? But I can tell you that just about EVERYTHING I read about the Suns during their streak referred to them as "the second best team in the league" or "right up there with Dallas".

As far as the offseason goes, the perception was that Dallas had a title in their hands and let it slip away. But now they're the clear favorite to win it all, so I don't think that you guys have any reason to be mad at the world. If the Mavs are THAT good, then you'll have the last laugh anyway. Right?

As for being insanely optimistic, what do you expect? We have the best record in the league right now, should have been here when we were 0-4 it was a lot different.

I never mentioned optimism, did I? At least, I don't think I did. The Mavs are a pain in the ass right now because they just don't LOSE. You guys have every reason to be proud, just don't be such disagreeable dicks all the time.

This is a great forum--even as a Spurs fan, I subscribe to it to help it financially. I have learned to respect the views here and of course--it IS a Mavs forum, so if they want to trash San Antonio, that is their right. I don't expect to change anyone's opinion. If you go to a San Antonio forum, believe me, you see people write tons of stuff about the Mavs i.e., "choking in the playoffs" "having no rings" etc, etc.

THe people here are diverse and have an incredible sense of humor. The level of writing is higher here than any other basketball website that I've ever seen.

They have fun.

Loosen up. People are going to knock the Suns here. Some of their shots may be below the belt.

If that offends you, honestly, you should find some other forum.

The Mavs have a right to feel pretty smug right now. They are the best team in the league. The Sun's win streak was nice. It will also be totally meaningless in the playoffs, when they will face no Eastern team en route to the WCF.

Even my team, San Antonio, was right in the thick of things last week even though their bench sucks, Tim Duncan played like crap, it was the second night of a back to back, and every other excuse Spurs fans can use to justify still having faith in their team for the second half of the season.

Really--if I was a Sun's fan--I'd keep my mouth shut right now in view of the fact that the Suns record against teams in the west is so pitiful.

(BTW--by saying this, I am not mouthing off about San Antonio's chances, either. The Spurs are older than dirt, have imbeciles coming off the bench who have never heard of rebounding, and unless something drastic happens in the way of a trade will probably have to be satisfied this year of knocking the Suns out of the playoffs and trying to avoid being totally embarrassed by the Mavs in the WCF).

Relax--enjoy the banter--don't take this stuff so seriously...

Props to you BSR... that was very well said!

You guys are some cold-blooded mofos...

But I think that now we know why the rape allegations were dropped. No evidence of actual penetration could be found.

Either that or Nash's pinch was an indication of how LITTLE evidence there could be with any girl Kobe is with. :D

well said, Rob....I like to think a person won't take "booger eatin' flaming homo retard" too seriously....unless of course the person happens to be a booger eater, in which case it might be politically incorrect to call that person a booger eater.

heck, I'd give you a rep point if you weren't a Spurs fan.

cheers

Troll...Who gives a flying flip what you think. The folks on this board have been going at it for years now, you don't like it, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

I give a flying flip. That's all that really matters, isn't it?

Face it, the internet is just chock full of narcissists.
