Spurs' Robinson placed on injured list with back trouble

April 16, 2002

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- San Antonio Spurs center David Robinson was placed on the injured list Tuesday with a lower back strain.

The Spurs activated center Amal McCaskill to take Robinson's place on the roster for Tuesday night's game against Phoenix.

Robinson hurt his back in the first half of Friday's victory in Detroit, but stayed in the game to finish with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 31 minutes. He did not play in San Antonio's win in Memphis on Sunday.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said earlier this week that, even though his team is battling Dallas for the Midwest Division title, Robinson would be doubtful for the last two regular-season games, against the Suns and the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.

Popovich said it was more important that Robinson rest his back and be available for the playoffs, which begin this weekend.

Robinson is averaging 12 points and eight rebounds a game, both second on the team to Tim Duncan.

San Antonio and Dallas have identical 56-24 records with two remaining. The Midwest Division winner automatically gets the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, while the other team would likely be the No. 4 seed. The Spurs own the tiebreaker in the event they and the Mavericks finish with the same record.

Not much of a story. He will be back for the playoffs and with teh Spurs playing the Suns and the Jazz, he can be rested without much worry.

The Jazz are a grind it out team with a similiar style to the Spurs. Maybe the Jazz will sneak in a win and get the title for the Mavs.

It's no secret that there is no love lost between those two teams.

Is there any team that doesn't intensely dislike the Jazz?

It pretty much started with Malone knocking out Rabinson with that chickenshit elbow.
