View Full Version : Craig James on Cuban

Craig James is speaking to my group right now and he had a pretty funny story about Mark Cuban and Broadcasting.com. Cuban approached James and Ross Perot Jr.'s company a few years back trying to strike a deal where AudioNet (predecessor to Broadcast.com) would use content provided by Perot Jr.'s group. They all thought Cuban was a joke, and some of the guys on the board were talking smack to him, saying he was crazy and just full of crap! Cuban offered James 10% of the company, but was declined. A few years later, when Yahoo! bought Broadcast.com for $5 billion, Cuban sent an e-mail to James rubbing it in, cuz he could have been a good $500mil richer!

For anyone who doesn't know who Craig James is, he's an ex-NFL player and current CBS sports broadcaster. Also an SMU alumn i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif

Why do people still rag on Cuban after all of his success?

Why the hell would Cuban off Craig James 10% equity in AudioNet?

Cuban offered the 10% stake in exchange for content, which would have been provided by Ross Perot Jr.'s company. James was associated with Perot's company somehow (don't remember how), but he thought Cuban's company was some kind of scam so he rejected the offer. He wanted at least 50% or something. Most of the guys at Perot's office were supposedly giving Cuban a hard time too. He told us that he visited the AudioNet hq in Deep Ellum and what he saw was a large empty warehouse space with two computer mainframe structures, both with good looking women operating them. After seeing that, he thought it was all a scam i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif This story was told to us in a lighthearted manner, so it's not like he hates Cuban or vice versa. Just something funny to look back on. If only he had believed in Cuban, there would be an extra $500 mil with his name on it!
