Heat signs Luke Jackson, waives Penny Hardaway

By Ira Winderman | Sun-Sentinel.com

Penny Hardaway's NBA comeback has come to an end with the Miami Heat.

Hardaway was waived by the team in order to clear a roster spot for former Development League guard Luke Jackson.

Still searching for a reliable outside shooter to offset last summer's free-agent losses of Jason Kapono, James Posey and Eddie Jones, the Heat signed Jackson, a 6-foot-7 shooting specialist.

Jackson left the Idaho Stampede to fly to South Florida for an audition over the weekend.

Jackson, who was selected with the No. 10 pick by Cleveland in 2004, reported to the Stampede last week, scoring 30 points in his only appearance with the team.

He was cut at the end of training camp by the Raptors, in part because of Toronto's offseason addition of Kapono.

Jackson has appeared in 59 NBA games, starting two, with a .356 career 3-point shooting percentage.

Hardaway, 36, signed a non-guaranteed, veteran's-minimum contract with the Heat in the offseason, after sitting out nearly two full years due to injuries.

While he worked his way back into eight starts in his 16 appearances, he struggled with his offense, averaging 3.8 points on .367 shooting.

He was replaced in the starting lineup last Thursday in Portland by Dorell Wright, after consecutive scoreless appearances.

The highlight of Hardaway's comeback was when he scored 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting, including 4-of-4 from behind the 3-point line, in a Nov. 17 victory in New Jersey. It was the lone double-figure performance in the comeback for a player who carried a career 15.4 scoring average into the season.

By rule, Hardaway will be made available to any other NBA team, at his minimum salary, for a 48-hour waiver period.

Oh boy, we better not hear any Penny to Dallas rumors. But since we hear every other rumor, I'm kind of expecting it.

He would be a great pick up for any team who needs a guard... obviously, we don't. I think he should go to his former team, Orlando. That backcourt is so young--he would be a welcomed addition. Plus, he played with Dwight Howard before there was a Dwight Howard.

Michael Finley. Doug Christie. Devean George. Eddie Jones.

Penny sounds like a natural here.

I hate to hear this as a huge fan of Penny or was anyway. Hopefully he finds a place on another NBA team. Luke Jackson? Wasn't he a lottery pick for the Cavs not too long ago? They already gave up on him? Whatever happened to Dajuan Wagner? The Cavs can't draft worth a damn with the exception of 'Bron. I'm sure if they had the 2nd overall pick they probably would've took Darko Milicic.
