since the starting rosters have been released and the all star game is a month away..we might as well start a thread with comments, thoughts, predictions, anger and stupidity.

Western Conference Starters:
Allen Iverson
Kobe Bryant
Carmelo Anthony
Tim Duncan
Yao Ming

Leastern Conference Starters:
Jason Kidd
Dwyane Wade
Lebron James
Kevin Garnett
Dwight Howard

Dunk Contest Contenders:
Dwight Howard
Gerald Green
Jamario Moon
Rudy Gay

Thoughts: Most of these starters are most deserving to be in the game..but not starting..

If heart-less Tracy Mcgrady were starting it would be the dumbest thing ever...However..now he may not even make the team..SCORE!!!

I am excited to see what Dwight will do this year...
I believe Gerald Green said he will replicate one dunk from videos that fans send to him..

DEMOCRACY FAILED!!!

As if the inevitable choice between Giuliani or Clinton for president isn't enough of an indication, the American public (and a bunch of Chinese folks) have proven that the average voter is too inept to make any informed decisions beyond whether they "want fries with that"...

Seriously, you'd think the Nuggets would be a better team since they have TWO STARTERS in the All-Star lineup - looks like Phoenix has some competition for Greatest Underachiever this season (and Dallas doesn't count because there was nothing "great" about our underachieving last season!)

NEW YORK -- With a late rally, Allen Iverson is an All-Star starter again.

Iverson surged from behind in the fan voting to earn a starting spot in next month's game when the vote totals were released Thursday night. Denver Nuggets teammate Carmelo Anthony will join him in New Orleans after earning his first starting nod.

Lakers star Kobe Bryant will team with Iverson in the Western Conference backcourt. Houston center Yao Ming was voted in by the fans for the sixth straight season at center, while San Antonio's Tim Duncan was chosen as the other forward. He has been selected to every All-Star Game since entering the league in 1997.

Boston's Kevin Garnett, the MVP of the 2003 game, was the leading vote-getter with 2,399,148 votes. He will be joined in the East frontcourt by Cleveland forward LeBron James and Orlando center Dwight Howard, a first-time starter. Miami's Dwyane Wade and New Jersey guard Jason Kidd round out the starting lineup.

Iverson rallied to pass Houston's Tracy McGrady in the final weeks of voting to earn his first start since moving to the Western Conference early last season. He started seven straight All-Star Games while playing for Philadelphia, but fell short last year after the 76ers dealt him to the Nuggets in December 2006.

The two-time MVP of the All-Star Game beat McGrady by 10,410 votes and will make his ninth appearance on Feb. 17 in New Orleans.

"It's a good feeling. I think it's a tribute to my teammates and coaching staff because without those guys none of that would be possible," Iverson said in a statement. "But most of all I just want to thank the fans for appreciating what I go out and do on the court night in and night out. It's just a great feeling and an honor, and I'm just looking forward to trying to play the best that I can play for the fans."

Garnett, another perennial starter, also will experience the game from the other conference.

The Boston forward will appear in his 11th straight All-Star Game, second among active players to Shaquille O'Neal's 14, and ninth start. The longtime Minnesota Timberwolves star is a leading MVP candidate at midseason for the impact he has made on the Celtics, who own the NBA's best record at 33-7 after winning only 24 games last season.

Iverson was more than 80,000 votes behind McGrady, who has struggled with injuries this season, when the final update was released two weeks ago. He ended up with 1,203,152 votes. McGrady finished with 1,192,742.

James, the MVP of the 2006 game and the leading vote-getter last season, was second overall with 2,108,831 votes. He said he never looks at getting selected as tiresome.

"It's always exciting because the fans vote you in. They vote me in as a starter every year," James said. "Without the fans there's no us. They dream about having all these guys out on the court at the same time. It's their opportunity to get that. It's always special."

The coaches from each conference will choose the reserves, who will be announced next Thursday.

Lose the dunk contest and skills competition. Replace them with a 2 on 2 tournament and a game of HORSE. What's more entertaining? Dirk taking on Ray Allen in HORSE, or a bunch of scrubs (sans Howard) dreaming up circus dunks that you'll never see in an actual game? Kobe and Duncan taking on Lebron and KG in 2 on 2, or Steve Nash and Dwayne Wade dribbling around cones?

Either that or just turn the whole day over to Charles Barkley and let him wrestle 5 midgets at once.

dirno2000
01-25-2008, 11:24 AM
I don't think you could get any of the good players to go 2 on 2. It would get too competitive.

DelNegro
01-25-2008, 11:27 AM
You're probably right. Besides, the NBA would never go for it anyways. They're too much in love with the dunk contest.

Great ideas, and here I thought HORSE was dead. Although they would probably end up putting guys like Korver and JJ Reddick in that competition. Still scrubs = still lame.

What would be kind of cool (to me, no one else I've shared the idea with seems to think so) would be to see Dwight do the sticker dunk AGAIN but get even higher.

Also, for those unaware, there will be a game of HORSE this All-Star Weekend, starring players from the D-League. Let's hope that it's a success and the NBA adopts it for itself.

Dirk should be there instead of carmelo. how can nuggets have two starters
the all-star game is a popularity contest in terms of voting for the starters. the simple answer to your question is that carmelo is more popular than dirk.

i'm assuming you're wondering how the nuggets can have two starters when their record is not the best record in the league. dwayne wade would be a prime example to explain this. his team is terrible yet wade is very popular which is why he got voted to be a starter on the eastern conference all-star team.

3pt shootout contestants:

Kobe
Nash
Peja
D. Gib
Kapono

Kobe is the only one that is more of a jump shooter...usually those type of shooters never fare too well in these contests bc they use up more energy...everyone else is just a quick release spot up shooter.

Kapono to Defend Title
The Toronto Raptors’ Jason Kapono will defend his title in this year’s Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout, which will be held on Saturday, Feb. 16, at New Orleans Arena as part of NBA All-Star Saturday Night.
Kapono will attempt to become the first back-to-back winner of the Foot Locker Three-Point Shootout since Peja Stojakovic won the 2002 and 2003 titles. Stojakovic will return to the competition representing the hometown New Orleans Hornets for the first time since finishing as runner-up in the 2004 competition.

Stojakovic and Kapono will be joined by Western Conference starter and 10-time All-Star Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, Daniel Gibson of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Richard Hamilton of the Detroit Pistons and two-time MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns.

Bryant chooses rest over surgery for injured finger
Bryant chooses rest over surgery for injured finger
February 14, 2008
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -- Kobe Bryant was diagnosed with a torn ligament in his right pinkie finger Thursday and the Lakers All-Star has decided not to undergo surgery that could sideline him for six weeks.

The damage occurred when Bryant dislocated the finger at New Jersey on Feb. 5, and was aggravated in Wednesday night's game at Minnesota.

The team said Thursday that the damage was more extensive than first believed. There is a complete tear of the radial collateral ligament and avulsion fracture, in which a small bone fragment had been pulled off by a tendon.

Bryant was examined in Los Angeles by Dr. Steven Shin, a hand specialist who recommended surgery to repair the ligament.

"My current thinking is to give my finger some treatment and rest for a few days, and hope I can still continue to compete at a high level after that rest," Bryant said in statement.

"I would prefer to delay any surgical procedure until after our Lakers season, and this summer's Olympic Games. But this is an injury that myself and the Lakers medical staff will just have to continue to monitor on a day-to-day basis."

It was unclear if Bryant will play in Sunday's All-Game at New Orleans. But he will skip the 3-point shooting contest, with Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas replacing him.

Al Horford and Sean Williams were the surprises to me. Yes, you know they have talent but I didn't expect them to outshine some of the other names present.

The dunk competition had become a joke but Howard and Green really brought it back this year. The superman thing was freakin' greatness. No one else seemed all that impressed with Green blowing out the candle but I thought it was cool and showed creativity we haven't seen recently.

Kapono is nuts. I thought Peja might challenge him but Kapono caught fire and that was the end.

I was happy to see Williams win the skills challenge but Wade was a complete joke. I expected better of him then just felt sorry for him.

Pretty crazy to watch Robinson and Duncan swish half court shots. Maybe Duncan should try shooting more 3's too.

how do you put a cupcake on the rim, blow it out before you dunk and not get a 50? i believe the scores would be a lot more accurate if the judges were allowed to see replays.

Slight nitpick, though. Why put the tape on the floor? He missed it by two feet. Of course no one talked about it, because the dunk was what it was. But that was not the best strategic move, to lay the tape on the floor.

but again, he didn't dunk it. it would be different if he threw it in for show but he had to because he jumped from too far out.

i'm nitpicking though. it was a 50 on showmanship alone.

i will say that his first finals dunk was much better. i thought i'd seen it all until that. bounce it off the backboard with one hand and dunk it with the other.

I agree on Dirno's point about the judges needing to be able to watch the replay. I wasn't that impressed from the live dunk of Green blowing out the candle. I assumed that the air from the dunk blew it out. But after seeing the replay I was blown away by the body control and everything else.

So he got robbed, but that just makes up for how badly Howard was robbed last year with the sticker dunk.

Overall I just love Howard's energy and creativity. He plays the crowd well and just has so much dang fun it's contagious. It says something that people aren't even talking about his first dunk, which I found absolutely incredible.

But the Superman dunk (and it WAS dunk I mean good grief he threw it down from four feet away) and the off the backboard dunk were just incredible. Those pics are amazing.

the 4 feet away thing is why it wasnt a dunk. i loved it because of the showmanship and it was cool but that isnt a dunk. i still woulda given it a 50 but it was the 3rd best dunk of the night. the off the backboard was first and the blow out the candle was second. the most underrated dunk of the night was the windmill by green. that was the highest ive ever seen anyone get(including any of howards). his eyes were even with the rim.

poor dirk

He actually played really well today I thought.

HAHA, Kidd just inbounded off DIrk's foot. Now they're chatting on the court with 1 second left. I love it.

Is there any chance we could get Chris Paul instead of Kidd?

That he did, that he did.

Dirk was as aggressive as I've ever seen him in one of these in the fourth tonight.

Did you guys see the end there when the East was shooting free throws? Kidd bounced the inbound pass off Dirk's foot in the previous play and when the free throws were being shot Dirk and Kidd were talking throughout the whole thing, high-fiving each other. Good stuff!

I turned off the TV after the West started fouling. Guess one of them heard about the deal. After being pretty seriously upset by the deal last week, I've come around to it. Devin was great and he will be for years to come, but the fact of the matter is, Dirk Nowitzki is the best player to ever wear a Mavericks uniform and may be for a long time. We can't waste that opportunity.

Was that inbounds pass intentional? I didn't watch the 2nd half.

During last year's All-Star game, Dirk looked unenthusiastic, lazy, and worn-out... That theme pretty much continued until the Mavs lost at the hands of the Warriors (at least in his body language, if not his stat line...)

This year he looked energized, motivated, and like he was having fun... Hopefully that theme continues until he wins a title...

Welcome over!

After watching last night, all I can say is wow. The friendship of Kidd and Dirk is aparent. Also, this should give us a huge shot in the arm, just on attitude alone.

Shaggy, I was also cheering for the East because of Kidd. All I wanted to see was Kidd throwing alley opps to guys like Dwight and Lebron.

Red plastic cup? Looks like Stern was at a kegger and got lost, then tried to paint someones wall with his beer.
