Marc Stein: Looks like we have a fairly significant three-way deal that has been submitted to the league just before the trade deadline.

NBA front-office sources tell ESPN.com that Orlando is acquiring Rafer Alston from Houston to fill the void created at point guard by Jameer Nelson's shoulder injury.

The Rockets will receive Memphis guard Kyle Lowry, Orlando forward Brian Cook and perhaps two other minimum-salaried players to make the finances work.

The Grizzlies will receive a first-round pick from Orlando.

This deal makes no sense. I really hope there is more behind it. Rafer was playing great when TMAC was out. He became more of a passer and took less shots. What we needed from him.

Brooks looks decent, but whatever happened to Houston being a dark horse contender for the championship. At the beginning of the year, Jeff Van Gundy and others were talking about the new big three of T-Mac, Yao, and Artest. Now they look destined for another first round exit no matter who they play.

A few weeks ago I believe before Bynum's injury...JVG still said that the Rockets were going to the finals v Boston. I guess he forgot about Houston's injury bugs. One would think he would remember that.

I don't think you can sleep on Houston. They've still got one of the top two centers in basketball, a couple productive front-court role players, and their SECOND best defender at the 2/3 is named Ron Artest. That said, this trade looks to me like a good move for Orlando and an admission from Houston that they just don't think this is their year.

We were deceived by TMAC's lies. It's still possible for the Rockets to be a darkhorse. I think we can get to the second round now that the loser (TMAC) is gone for the season. I'm not banking on any Finals appearances though.

...until Yao gets a season-ending injury.

(or did T-Mac steal his turn?)

...until Yao gets his yearly season-ending injury.

Well, usually around this time, the Rockets lose a player to a season-ending injury. It was TMAC's turn this time, so I think Yao is safe. ;)

Haha - I just edited my post to reflect that!

i like lowry and brooks but man this seems like it's going to create a lot of instability for them at that position. plus the fact that the two of them combined are about 8 ft tall..kidd better get in that post and exploit that match up

I'm sure Raefer wanted to get as far away from Knee-Mac as possible.

Can't say this doesn't hurt a little bit. I think the Rockets can still make the playoffs, but it'll be harder now. Alston was 12th in the league among PG's for the assist to turnover ratio. Brooks is nowhere to be found. :(

im glad rafer is gone but i really hope brooks can step it up.

I'm sorry, but this guy's name is really Wafer, like "chocolate wafer" wafer? Is that how it's pronounced?

Correct.

When his name shows up in the stat/box scores, it usually shows up as "V. Wafer". All I can think about is this:

wafer can at least play, and has some serious athleticism. houston would be smart to let him replace tmac as the sg of the future.

I agree. Rafer will be sorely missed in Houston, especially defensively.

It's comical how fans conveniently write the Rockets off because of this trade. McGrady is out for the season (so no more drama) and I was upset at first about the Alston trade, but now I feel the Rockets will be alright.

This trade was made for future considerations but Lowry can still contribute immediately.

All things considered, the Rockets can focus on playing as a cohesive unit now and regain their defensive edge again this season. This season is far from lost and as far as the playoffs go, they very well could go deep. Rockets are a lot more capable than people give them credit for, but some things never change.:D

T-Whack doesn't play anymore for the Rockets. They should win the 'ship this year.

Might as well, because you know you won't make it out of the first round anyway. We go through this crap every single year.
