There is basketball on ALL DAY TOMORROW.

So get some beer. Tell your woman what's up. And sit on your damn couch.

Bulls @ Celtics. 11:30 am CST. On ESPN

More than 24 hours had passed since they learned that Kevin Garnett would miss the first round against the Chicago Bulls, and probably the rest of the playoffs, and that general manager Danny Ainge suffered a heart attack that later was described as minor by the team.

The mood had lightened enough Friday for second-year forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis to joke about his role as the replacement for “The Big Ticket,” Garnett’s nickname, in Saturday’s series opener.

“I’m not the Big Ticket. I’m the Ticket Stub,” Davis said with a grin. “So don’t count the Ticket Stub out. You might need the ticket to get into the game, but you leave with the ticket stub because you’ll never forget this game. You need it as a souvenir.” ...link (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/preview?gid=2009041802)

Pistons @ Cavaliers 2:00 pm CST. On ABC

Central Division rivals, this is the third time in the past four years that they've met playoffs. Two years ago, Cleveland, behind an epic performance from James in Game 5, beat the Pistons in the Eastern Conference finals to avenge a loss to Detroit the previous year in a rough-and-tumble conference semifinal.

The rosters haven't changed much since. The roles sure have.

With 66 regular-season wins -- and a sparkling 39-2 mark in their rowdy arena -- the Cavaliers enter as the No. 1 overall seed. link (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/preview?gameId=290418005)

Your Dallas Mavericks @ SA Spaaares. 7:00 pm CST. ESPN (but I recommend KTXA-21 HD.)

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- The Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs were so dominant three years ago that they practically forced the NBA to change how playoff teams are stacked.

Three years later, the Spurs and Mavericks have ceded that superiority.

Tim Duncan and the Spurs are the third seed, but were a Michael Finley buzzer-beater this week from dropping to fifth and starting the playoffs on the road. Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas are seeded sixth, and had to win seven of the last nine to get there.

In the Western Conference, it's now the Los Angeles Lakers and everyone else.

"But we think we're still up there," said Duncan, embarking on his 12 consecutive postseason. "We still think we have a chance."

So do the Mavericks, who renew their playoff rivalry with the Spurs starting Saturday in San Antonio. But unlike in 2006, it won't be the same meeting of 60-win titans who played to a thrilling seven-game series in the West semifinals. The Mavs prevailed, and went on to the NBA finals before losing to Miami...link (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/preview?gameId=290418024)

Rockettes @ Trail Blazers. 9:30ish CST. ESPN.

The series gets under way Saturday when the Blazers host the Rockets at the Rose Garden. Portland surpassed expectations and earned the fourth seed in the Western Conference and home-court advantage in the first round.

The Blazers, the youngest team in the playoffs, went 54-28 this season and claimed a share of the Northwest Division title with the Denver Nuggets.

The Rockets, the West's fifth seed, finished 53-29, second to the San Antonio Spurs in the Southwest Division.

But while Portland is the higher seed, their youth and inexperience have put them in an underdog role for the playoffs...link (http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/preview?gameId=290418022)

If it isn't the Mavericks game, talk about it here.

How about: Thinking you have to work all day (aka miss game one) only to have your boss tell you "I know you're a huge basketball fan so I'll let you off in time for tipoff"

I'm sure Derrick did interview for the local media all year long. I doubt the millions of people were on his mind considering, I bet, all he could think about was the fact that he just beat the Celtics. You'd think he would have played a little worse if he had stage fright.

Yeah maybe, we´ll see. Houston was great, they shot the ball really well. But the game WAS reffed a bit uneven. Portland was agressive, scored in the paint alot and they get 3 FTA in the whole 1st half? And the refs really went out of their way not to call that 3rd on Yao.

Although you never count out a comeback against the Rockets anytime, but I don't think Portland can climb back from 20+.

Portland is really a jump shooting team mostly.

Blake, LMA, Outlaw, Roy (he slashes too, I know), Rudy.

Oden is having a pretty good game on offense.

Overall it´s an ass kicking sure. But I don´t think the Rockets will shoot 65% from the field every game.

Also 27-7 FTA is a bit lopsided even though the Blazers are mostly shooting jumpers in the 2nd half.

Portland matches up horribly v Houston. Houston is basically 4-0 v them now if not for a lucky Roy shot.

Perimeter defenders to bother Roy, great defense against a jump shooting team, plus no answer for Yao. Brooks exploited the HELL out of Blake too.

Houston really should get out of the 1st round this year.

Agreed. I thought the same thing watching it.

Anyways, I think the Bulls can beat the Celtics and if not, take them all the way to 7. Their youth seems to bother them. They better win as many titles as they can because as that team gets older and some of the other teams in the East keep getting better and are much younger, it will much more difficult.

David Thorpe Loves Joakim Noah's Foul (http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-39-96/David-Thorpe-Loves-Joakim-Noah-s-Foul.html)
April 20, 2009 10:34 AM

You can see it at about the 2:30 mark of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alUj2U4M7HQ).
In a nutshell, with the Bulls up one and the game clock in its final seconds, Paul Pierce made his way with the ball towards the elbow, shadowed by Kirk Hinrich. Joakim Noah -- who had been watching Glen Davis under the hoop -- thundered out to help on Pierce.
As Noah approached, Pierce rose to fire.
Noah crushed the ball, and (although it's a little hard to tell on regular speed video) quite probably a hunk of Pierce's arm, too.

It was a foul on Noah. He argued it a little, but I think just about everyone had already convicted him. Despite his NCAA championships, his hustle and his great play all night in Boston, he's still the guy who got busted by the cops (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alUj2U4M7HQ), essentially for partying. He's the guy who recently said on the record (http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&url=http%3A%2F%2Fvoices.washingtonpost.com%2Fdcspo rtsbog%2F2009%2F03%2Fjoakim_noah_on_boys_boredom_a n.html&ei=S4HsSdDJK4OEtwfjnoXSBQ&usg=AFQjCNF1NJmKzWHD4zDLvdpr3Ne7LZehkg) that his friends could make their own version of Entourage with their antics. He's the guy with the crazy hair, the crazy screaming, and the crazy dance moves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQ3y5hTHuP4).

And what's he doing? He's fouling the jump shooter, as in, he's breaking one of basketball's oldest axioms. With the game on the line. Potentially negating the high point of post-Jordan Bulls history.
I don't know what Noah's teammate Kirk Hinrich was feeling at the moment of that play -- was he exasperated at Noah, or the referee? -- but he was surely disgusted. Watch his body language. Just fed up. Announcers, fans, media ... everyone seemed to agree this was a disastrously good example of what's wrong with Joakim Noah.
Noah didn't help matters by standing there holding his head in disbelief at the call. He didn't look like a guy who knew what he was doing.

And yet somewhere the smartest basketball guy I know, David Thorpe, cheered. When Noah fell to the Bulls on draft day 2007, Thorpe told me that he thought the Bulls would win a championship with him.
The kinds of things that made him say that, believe it or not, were at the heart of this play.
"Sure," says Thorpe, "I wish he didn't come down quite so aggressively. But you're playing the defending champions on the road. This is a Paul Pierce jumper from the free throw line. You can't play solid. You have to make a play."

The irony, he points out, is that this play is right out of Tom Thibodeau's Boston Celtics' playbook. One thing that Thorpe and his IMG Academies colleague Mike Moreau have been noticing all year about the Celtics is that they do foul jump shooters. Not constantly, but more than most good defensive teams.
And to Moreau and Thorpe, that's OK.

"The reality is that you need to contest shots so aggressively all the time," Thorpe explains. "That's what Joakim does. You ask him to go hard, and he goes hard. The Celtics, too. And you can't go that hard and not cross the line once in a while. Coach Moreau said it's like asking someone to run 28 miles, and then getting mad because they ran 28 miles and one foot."

Thorpe points out that Joakim Noah holds the all-time record for blocks in the Final Four, and in the NCAA tournament -- despite the fact that he's not really known as a shot-blocker. That, Thorpe says, is because Noah contests shots hard. "The fact is, you can't apply standard rules to that guy," says Thorpe. "And Gator fans know what I mean when I say 'thank goodness.' His pushing those limits is a big reason why Florida won two titles, instead of none."

Thorpe points out that the Bulls were making big aggressive contests like that all night, and did that help Ray Allen into a bad night? That's the idea ... "Ray Allen had a good look at the end of overtime," says Thorpe, "and missed badly. One thing he might have been thinking was 'here they come ... I better get rid of it quickly.'"

If you get people thinking like that, that's good defense.
Thorpe contrasts it to how Hedo Turkoglu defended the final possession against Andre Iguodala (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3L8mNnWjlYk). Everybody agrees that was great defense by Turkoglu, and he sure didn't foul the jump shooter. But Thorpe posits that by being determined not to foul, Turkoglu's defense lost a little edge.
"To play at the highest level," says Thorpe, "you're going to to over the top sometimes. You'll risk some mistakes. And that's OK. Sometimes, you're not playing percentages ... you just want to go play. To me, Hedo Turkoglu is 6-10, and Andre Iguodala is 6-6 -- just make a play. I don't care what happens. Make that play. That's what Joakim did, and I'll take it."

And in the end of course, the fates smiled on Noah for his aggression, as so often seems to happen. Not only did Paul Pierce miss one of the free throws to ensure overtime, but they also proved Noah somewhat correct -- in overtime Pierce made that exact same shot with ease. We'll never know if his earlier shot would have gone in, thanks to Joakim Noah, and that could be a good thing for Bulls fans.

Yeah I don't know why all of the announcers went ape sh*t over Noah's foul. It ALMOST wasn't one. He just barely got the wrist. In another year, he'll be able to make that play without fouling.

I'm sorry. I thought the shot selection by both teams in the second half was atrocious. And I can't understand why Portland plays so much slower on the road.

True about the shot selection. Especially the play calling on the Houston side was pretty bad in the 2nd half. Still both teams played pretty good D IMO.

Portland tried to run at times. Houston just wont let them with great transition D.

Man that Nuggets - Hornets game is intense. Flagrants, Technicals. I sense a brawl coming ;-)

Wow, Hornets nearly gave a ten point lead away in the last 3 minutes. That was a hard game.

These Hornets/Nuggets games show just how badly the Mavs match up with the Hornets (i.e. Paul). The Hornets aren't even that good.

I'm sorry, but this female announcer on the Lakers-Jazz game is absolutely brutal.

She´ll be at service in the Lakers shower after the game.

I don't know why, but I don't want to face Denver...then again, I don't want to face Paul.

But hey, if this Mavs team can win Tuesday on the Road...then just maybe we can get comfortable that this team can make some noise beyond one round!

Honestly, the intensity of this team is reminding of 2006...let's hope they can be as dangerous as they believe they are!

I can't really decide between the two, in terms of difficulty, but I think I'd rather have the Hornets since we'd have home court against them.

Hornets aren't nearly as good as they were last year. I'd rather play them for the mere fact we would have homecourt against them. We have not beaten the Nuggets at all this year. Nuggets should be up 3-0 in 3 blowout wins if they didn't spaz out and give the game away early in game 3. Their athleticism worries me and I hate playing in Denver. Plus, Paul is more prone to bad turnovers than Billups.

Houston is the only team in the west that can beat the Lakers in a series, they match up with L.A by far the best.

Mavs/Whorenets & Fakers/Rockettes in 2nd round works for me. Then Dallas/Houston in WCF. Hell yeah works for me. :D

But anyway that's looking way ahead and unlikely anyway. (Whorenets arent beating Thuggets.)

Uh...it's because they could kill us with transition offense and they're a super streaky team, that's why you don't wanna face Denver!

I rather play Denver. The playoffs are all about the matchups, and I honestly think we match up better with the Nuggets... You can "hide" Dirk on defense against K-Mart, whereas against West he may be expending too much energy playing the pick and roll on defense. Also, Kidd matches up a lot better to Billups than Paul IMHO. Although, the last two times we played them, Wright did a fine job on Paul (if you watched the games, instead of just checking the boxscores).

We're not in the second round!

Back to the topic at hand, that was pretty funny when Scalibrinie (sp?) realized he had been called for clear-path foul.

Chicago has done a great job of choking in OT.

Ben Gorden is such a clutch shooter. He atoned for that missed FT, for sure.
