early AP recap:

(TICKER) -- The worst offensive game in NBA postseason history nearly had a classic finish.

Jerry Stackhouse's potential game-winning 3-pointer was a fraction of a second too late as the Boston Celtics won the lowest scoring game in playoff history, 66-64 over the Detroit Pistons to take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

Detroit and Boston shattered the lowest combined score in postseason history, falling 10 points shy of the previous mark of 170, which was reached three times.

Both teams were equally appalling, forcing each to make crucial shots down the stretch.

Paul Pierce scored six of his 19 points in the final two minutes and sank a pair of free throws to give the Celtics a 66-62 lead with just 5.9 seconds left.

But Kenny Anderson inexplicably fouled Chucky Atkins on a 3-point attempt with 2.8 seconds to go. Atkins made the first two free throws but intentionally missed his final attempt.

The rebound bounced high of the floor before Stackhouse corralled it behind the 3-point line on the right wing. He turned and banked a 3-pointer over a pair of defenders, but the shot left his hand just after time expired.

The officials immediately waved off the shot and Boston survived a scare to take the edge in the best-of-seven series.

Anderson had 17 points and Antoine Walker added 16 for the Celtics, who are 4-0 at home in the postseason.

Stackhouse finished with 19 points and Corliss Williamson added 15 off the bench for Detroit, which remained winless on the road in the playoffs.

I watched it. What a sad game....very ugly. A close finish but the refs made the right call on Stackhouse's last second shot. It went to 0:00 before he shot it. Damn sad performance on both sides.

I don't think I've seen an eastern conference game yet that hasn't been painful to watch.

05-11-2002, 12:00 AM
that's a good call David.

Yahoo Sports NBA page headline: Celtics, Pistons lower the bar

05-11-2002, 12:31 AM
pretty good headline imo.

From Richard at LMFF:

"if the mavs and Sac are possible saviors of the NBA, (with their up tempo games) then Detroit and Boston must be the anti-christ that is gonna rise from the dead and bring the end.

05-11-2002, 12:42 AM
I watched it with about 4 minutes to go in the 3rd.

I have no excuse for watching it until the final buzzer.

God, what an awful game. How do fans sit through that?

05-11-2002, 12:43 AM
funny line by the Richard guy.

They sit there because they got suckered into paying $50 a seat and they dont want to waste money.

much better shots per ticket dollar value out west

05-11-2002, 12:45 AM
not even close I imagine

05-11-2002, 12:49 AM
<< much better shots per ticket dollar value out west >>

I watched a couple turnovers, and couldn't take it. Here are some interesting stats for the evening.

Ben Wallace, and Tony Battie were the only two players to shoot over 50% from the field.

Celt and Pistons both shot 38% from the field and 10% from 3.

35 combined turnovers.

For those who say it was a defensive battle steals were high but only 6 blocks in the game.

18 combined offensive rebounds.

Second half score Pistons 31, Celts 29

Hales is right though. It's a win. Not what we all wanted to see, but I'd sure have taken a game three like that in Dallas over what we got.

05-11-2002, 01:21 PM
That score is PITIFUL. That is the Mavs score at the half- damn near anyway

05-11-2002, 02:06 PM
it was one game guys...relax...see game 5 vs. philly where our offense was just ridiculous.

05-12-2002, 06:18 PM
Well....I guess Hales is all giddy today. The Celts romped.

05-12-2002, 06:50 PM
Maybe if Ben Wallace really wants a championship he can come right on over to the Mavs...

He'd be very welcome i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

05-12-2002, 06:53 PM
Oh man...I wish!

05-12-2002, 10:38 PM
I would love to get that guy.

05-14-2002, 09:45 PM
Well the Celts beat the Pistons tonight and won the series 4-1 if anyone cares. Looks like it'll be Celts and Nets in the EC Finals. So much for the Lakers winning the title again right i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif

05-14-2002, 09:51 PM
I have the East dead on. I have Jersey coming out...but I picked the Mavs too...dang this heart of mine.i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif

West wins again...whoever it is.

05-14-2002, 09:59 PM
I bet Hales is dancing around like a madman right now!i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif

05-14-2002, 10:43 PM
I think NJ comes out of the east too, but I think they could give the Lakers a run for the title.

However, I thought the Pistons would beat out Boston. I don't really care about it, but I was hoping it would be Boston.

Now, they'll get taken out by NJ.

05-14-2002, 11:52 PM
I'm a relapsed Boston fan - I wouldn't mind seeing them in the Finals again.

05-15-2002, 02:54 PM
MFF, The Celts are a great defensive team this season...We have proved we can win in Jersey, and Pierce has absolutely torched the Nets this year...who the hell is going to guard him, van horn? lol

you could say the same thing about j kidd, but anderson is gonna do a decent job on him, better than you'd expect.

and for all of you who picked against the celts even beating philly, Fu%k y'all!!!

I know one thing, I hear alot of people on this board say how terrible the East is. Well this I know EVERY SINGLE playoff team in the East plays better defense than the Mavs! The Mavs score more points, but they are FAR more superior defensively.

<< I know one thing, I hear alot of people on this board say how terrible the East is. Well this I know EVERY SINGLE playoff team in the East plays better defense than the Mavs! The Mavs score more points, but they are FAR more superior defensively. >>

But who would win?

I'm going with the Mavs even though our defense needs tons of work.

05-15-2002, 04:22 PM
Well I think the Mavs would win, everyone on this board thinks that BUT the playoffs as we're learning the intensity turns up. The playoffs is about adjustments from game to game. In a playoff series with a team from the eastern conference, they would slow the game down SO MUCH that we don't know what would happen.

You see, Minnesota tried to beat us at our game and found out they didn't have the fire power. Sacramento tried to the first game and they got us on a COLD NIGHT and they won. The second game they tried again and LOST. Then they changed up on us, attacked more and defended VERY WELL, instead of trying to make it a track meet, then they proceeded to win the next three games. (Although we should have won game 4).

I'm just saying, we don't know what could happen, however I'd like to believe the Mavs would win. However they say defense wins championships and so far, all of the better defensive teams have advanced, so I couldn't definately say the Mavs would walk to the Eastern Conference championship.
