Smith wins NBA sportsmanship award

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Steve Smith won the NBA's Sportsmanship Award on Wednesday.

Smith, who was traded by the Portland Trail Blazers to the San Antonio Spurs last summer for Derek Anderson, won the award over P.J. Brown of the Hornets, followed by LaPhonso Ellis of the Miami Heat and Shawn Marion of the Phoenix Suns.

Smith is the third San Antonio player to be chosen for the honor. Teammate David Robinson won last year, while former Spur Avery Johnson won in 1998.

Smith received 65 of 126 votes from the a panel of national media members. Each team nominated one of its players.

Smith said he will donate his $25,000 prize to Reading is Fundamental Inc.

Giving that prize to RIF is total class.....very well done Mr. Smith!

That is a nice story, Doc. Thanks for posting that.

Much better than reading about another beating, drug/drinking problem or disgruntled player story.

It was nice to see a positive NBA story. The league should really make an effort to promote these stories.
