Port of L.A. police name O'Neal a reserve officer

LOS ANGELES -- First comes his third-consecutive NBA championship, then plans to produce a television drama. Now basketball star Shaquille O'Neal wants to be a police officer.

The Daily Breeze newspaper reported that O'Neal has been designated a second-class reserve officer by the police department of the Port of Los Angeles.

O'Neal, 30, has previously said he might consider a career in law enforcement when he retires from basketball.

This week, the entertainment trade newspaper Variety reported he had also met with executives from the major networks to pitch a one-hour drama that he would executive produce.

The basketball star -- who also has acted in the movie "Kazaam" and recorded the rap album "Shaq Diesel" -- has now completed enough training to fight crime with senior officers and carry a gun.

Holy crap. If I ever saw an officer the size of Shaq I would immediately stop in my tracks and surrender. I hope this works well for him, but I am afraid someone will be out there that wants to make a name for himself and will take a shot at Shaq. I hope not, but those kinds of sickos are out there.

I applaud him for following his dream of law enforcement, that's a tough biz. One part you left out, Doc, he can't fit into the patrol car. And I wonder how fast he can run? Most Police have to run far and fast during a pursuit. Can't you see that car, providing he sqqquueezzzed into it, going down the road lopsided!! And what a site to see him get in and out of it quickly. Oh, damn. Oh, and he needs to learn how to fight. No matter how big he is, his female-like (worse than) swings are not going to cut it.
