ABC, ESPN set NBA broadcasting teams; Barkley stays at TNT

July 25, 2002

NEW YORK (AP) -- Bill Walton and Tom Tolbert are heading from NBC to ABC and ESPN to call NBA games, while Charles Barkley signed a new deal with TNT.

Walton, a Hall of Famer, will team with play-by-play announcer Brad Nessler for ABC and ESPN, which, along with TNT, are starting a six-year, $4.6 billion TV rights deal with the NBA next season.

Tolbert, who played in the league from 1988-95, will join Mike Tirico as an ABC studio analyst and also will be a game analyst.

Walton and Nessler will be the lead duo for ABC's coverage and for ESPN's Wednesday games.

``With the NBA returning to ABC Sports for the first time in nearly three decades, we have assembled an announce crew that provides credibility and instant name recognition,'' ABC Sports president Howard Katz said Thursday.

Bill Walton is the biggest buttmunch poser in sports history.

it's amazing... they get sooo confused. we don't like bill walton just the same as we don't like john madden.

the only reason madden's games had such high ratings were because he happened to be matched up to the best game that week involving the NFC.

how easily confused the networks are

No Marv Albert? This blows.

I'd rather be bitten ten times by Marv Albert than hear Bill Walton even once.

true, Why not move the ESPN sunday night people to Manday, they're pretty good

Walton's great, although he does have an irritating tendency to run down our beloved Mavs.

As for Albert, he's clearly the best play-by-play guy going, but he is a bit over the top after a while...

Uh, I agree Dork77.

edit ---> Wow..they removed him! Cool.i/expressions/face-icon-small-cool.gif

Walton does several things for me. He makes my head hurt; he makes me scream at the TV which makes me appear to be like that really bad commercial last year of the female that her male friend should have subscribed to tivo. He makes me turn down the volumn of my surround sound and search for a radio station that broadcasts the game while I watch the TV. He makes me write bad emails to the network that signs his paycheck, and in my frustation I forget to hit spellcheck. He makes me remember and repeat, all the cuss words my grandfather said upon his return from the war in a span of 10 minutes or less. Prior to remembering all the cuss words, I can't remember a time when I repeated the word idiot one hundred times in less than three minutes. Other than that, I can't imagine why I wouldn't look forward to listening to him for another season.
