Spurs Obtain Mengke Bateer

The San Antonio Spurs today announced they have obtained center Mengke Bateer (MENK ba-TUR) from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for a 2003 second round draft pick.

The 6-11, 290-pound Bateer made his NBA debut last season after signing with the Denver Nuggets on February 26, 2002. He appeared in 27 games with the Nuggets, averaging 5.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per contest. Bateer was traded by the Nuggets to the Pistons – along with Don Reid and a first round pick – in exchange for Rodney White on October 1, 2002.

Bateer will join the Spurs following the completion of the 2002 Asian Games.

A native of Chinese Inner Mongolia the 26-year-old Bateer became the second Chinese player to appear in the NBA. He was China’s starting center in both the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games and his teammates on the Chinese National Team include Yao Ming and Wang Zhizhi. Bateer first joined the Chinese National Team in 1993 when he was 18.

Prior to joining the Nuggets he averaged 22.0 points, 12.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 42.2 minutes in 21 games during the 2002 season for the Beijing Ducks. He shot .492 (180-365) from the field and .346 (37-107) from three-point land. Bateer was named the MVP of the 2002 Chinese Basketball Association All-Star Game, finishing with 21 points.

This isn't a guy who has really contributed to any team outside the CBA, the Mongolian isn't someone to get all that excited about, but a second rounder is all it took? SA did well.

If they lost, would they put up signs "do not feed the ducks"?

if the mavs keep Wang, all 3 chinese players will be in Texas. maybe the nba will figure out how to use that in a marketing campaign or something...

That's the answer to Wang's odyssey of this summer. It was a NBA conspiracy to get all the Chinese imports to play against each other in the same conference! they did so well they even got them to the same state. that Stern, he's a genius!

You know, if Bateer can play for 15 minutes a game in SA, that will really help them. I'm not seeing that he will be able to tho.

Exactly, man. Could be very interesting to have those three players playing within the same division. The frequency with which they might face each other would certainly generate some interest in one big international market.

Now if the Mavs can hold up THEIR end of the bargain....

Hmmm... Texas Triangle... Great Wall of China... gotta be a marketing scenario there somewhere...

Especially if all 3 make the playoffs.

Remember the attention when Wang played in his first game last year? I think it would be similar each time two of the three played each other. At least for a while. Huge opportunity for exposure.

12th, 13th, 14th and 15th men have been kept on the roster with a lot less justification.
