Robinson fails to appear in court, warrant issued

February 20, 2003

CHICAGO (AP) -- Atlanta Hawks forward Glenn Robinson failed to appear in court on misdemeanor charges Thursday and a judge issued a warrant for his arrest.

The warrant does not extend beyond Illinois state lines.

``When and if he comes back into the state, he can be picked up on this warrant. There won't be any pursuit of this outside of the state,'' said Tom Stanton, a spokesman in the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Robinson, then with the Milwaukee Bucks, was arrested in July 2002 on charges of domestic battery, assault and illegal possession of a firearm. His ex-fiancee, Jonta French, told police he came to her home in Chicago Heights drunk and grabbed her and threatened her, demanding to know where she put a pistol he had left there. She said she escaped and ran to a neighbor's house to call police.

The former star from Purdue apologized publicly at the time.

When he failed to appear at a courthouse in Markham, Ill., on Thursday, Cook County Circuit Judge John Turner issued the warrant for his arrest. Stanton said it was unclear where Robinson was.

``I just looked at their team schedule,'' he said. ``They played in Dallas on Tuesday and they play in Los Angeles (Friday). But I don't know where he is.''

The Hawks are scheduled to play in Chicago on Feb. 28.

Robinson's Chicago attorney, George Murtaugh, did not immediately return phone calls from The Associated Press.
