I quoted a bit of this Twitter thread above, but here are some interesting Dirk stats/facts...

https://twitter.com/AndrewDBailey/st...77142277009415

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki finishes his career with 31,560 career points, sixth all time.

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki scored 3,663 career playoff points, 16th all time.

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki finished his career in 8th place in career Win Shares & 14th place in career playoff Win Shares.

Combine regular & postseason WS & Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, LeBron James, Karl Malone, Michael Jordan & Tim Duncan are the only players ahead of Dirk.

@AndrewDBailey: Kareem Abdul-Jabber once called Dirk Nowitzki a “one-trick pony.” Here are Dirk’s playoff numbers compared to Kareem’s.

@AndrewDBailey: Players who won both NBA MVP and NBA Finals MVP:

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
Michael Jordan
Wilt Chamberlain
LeBron James
Larry Bird
Magic Johnson
Moses Malone
Tim Duncan
Kobe Bryant
Kevin Durant
Shaquille O'Neal
Hakeem Olajuwon
Willis Reed
Wes Unseld
Bill Walton
DIRK NOWITZKI

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki avg'd 25.3 PTS & 10 REB in 145 playoff games.

The only players in NBA history with 500+ playoff minutes, 25+ PTS/gm & 10+ REB/gm: Dirk, Hakeem Olajuwon, Elgin Baylor, Bob Pettit & Anthony Davis.

Dirk leads that group in playoff Win Shares.

@AndrewDBailey: Top five seven-footers in career threes made:

5. Brook Lopez (436)
4. Kelly Olynyk (473)
3. Andrea Bargnani (627)
2. Channing Frye (1,049)
1. Dirk Nowitzki (1,980)

So, yeah. Combining 2nd and 3rd place is still 304 threes short of Dirk.

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki's career went from 1998-99 to 2018-19. Dallas Mavericks ranks over those 21 years...

Offensive Rating (PTS per 100 possessions): 1st
Defensive Rating (PTS allowed per 100 possessions): 12th
Net Rating (net PTS per 100 possessions): 2nd

SRS: 3rd
3P: 3rd
eFG%: 4th

@AndrewDBailey: The Spurs are the only team with a better record than the Mavericks over the course of Dirk Nowitzki's career.

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki made his NBA debut in 1998.

Before that, a total of 40 7-footers had hit a 3P. The combined total for 3P from those 40 players was 507.

Dirk Nowitzki made 1,982 3P in his career.

Since Dirk started, 81 other 7-footers have hit 7,253 3P.

Dirk changed the game.

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki

14x All-Star
12x All-NBA
2007 MVP
2011 NBA champion and Finals MVP

Career ranks

Wins Over Replacement Player: 19th
Win Shares: 8th
Points: 6th
Blocks: 52nd
Defensive Rebounds: 7th
Threes: 11th
Field goals: 9th
Free throws: 6th

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki in the 2011 playoffs: 27.7 PTS, 8.1 REB, 2.5 AST, 1.1 3P, 48.5 FG%, 46 3P%, 94.1 FT%, .609 TS%, 1 Finals MVP

@AndrewDBailey: It wasn't just 3P with Dirk Nowitzki. Here are his ranks in 2P from 10 feet and out over a 13-year stretch...

2004: 3rd
2005: 1st
2006: 2nd
2007: 1st
2008: 1st
2009: 1st
2010: 1st
2011: 1st
2012: 1st
2013: 9th
2014: 1st
2015: 2nd
2016: 1st

@AndrewDBailey: Sort every NBA player with 5K+ MIN since 1983-84 by the average of their ranks in available catch-all metrics and Dirk Nowitzki is No. 17.

@AndrewDBailey: Shout out to Holger Geschwindner too. His work with Dirk Nowitzki helped change basketball.

They showed the world that big guys can shoot. That opened the floodgates. Now, almost everyone is expected to have almost every skill.

The game's more fun than it was 21 years ago.

@AndrewDBailey: Dirk Nowitzki's...

10-yr peak: 25.9 PTS, 9.3 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL, 1.1 BLK & .186 Win Shares per 75 poss, +5.1 rTS%, +4.4 Box +/-, +11.2 NetRtg swing

5-yr peak: 25.8 PTS, 9.6 REB, 3.1 AST, 1.1 STL, 1.2 BLK & .204 Win Shares per 75 poss, +5.4 rTS%, +5.4 Box +/-, +12.5 NetRtg swing

@AndrewDBailey: Even if you go with a FIFTEEN-year peak for Dirk Nowitzki, it's not far off the 5- or 10-year peaks.

24.8 PTS, 8.9 REB, 2.9 AST, 0.9 STL, 1 BLK & .173 Win Shares per 75 poss, +5.2 rTS%, +4 Box +/-, +11.1 NetRtg swing

Incredible consistency and longevity.

Dirk welcomed home to a water cannon salute at Love Field. Reunion Tower was also lit up like the German flag. Awesome stuff.
Oh, wow. I saw the video of the water canon salute from outside the plane, but the video with Dirk in the cockpit is fantastic... He's absolutely exhausted, but he watches salute with the pilots, talks to them for a bit, then takes a picture with them -- when he probably could have just looked out the window from his seat. Just a stand up guy.

And even more than that...he's wide eyed like a kid when looking at the airplane cockpit... He's like a kid.. a humble, 7 foot, dead eyed shooting kid

Three people that are nails on chalkboard..
Chris Arnold, Fish, and Mark Cuban... you could have topped it off by throwing in Skin Wade.

I am so lucky. I had season tickets for 25 years, including Dirk's career through the finals. I always said "I'm gonna keep buying these until we get a championship." Once we did, I retired in August of 2011 and moved to the mountains.

But I was lucky. I was in Reunion when we beat Utah and returned to the playoffs after the bleak decade. I was there when Dirk and TMack had their shootout, and when Dirk got hurt in the playoffs against SA. I saw Tim Thomas blow Dirk that kiss and the 50 point barrage that followed. I was in tears in a hotel in South Carolina when we lost game six to Miami...I had a game 7 ticket in my wallet. Maybe the best game I saw was in San Antonio, and the Mavs lost...but it was so intense, JTerry tried to punch Mike Finley in the cajones.

The lowest point was losing to Golden State, and watching Dirk have to accept the MVP trophy at a news conference. But like most of you, I never lost faith. Even as they traded away everyone except Jet, I always knew Dirk would pull us through. I was reminding a more casual fan that to win the championship, we swept the back to back champion Lakers, and beat them down so hard they have yet to recover. Then to take out OKC, featuring their big three, including 2 MVPs and Westbrook, who now averages a triple double. Then of course Miami, and 2 more finals MVPs. And Dirk did it without anyone on his team as good as any of the Heat or the Thunder's big three.

It was 2 decades of pure basketball, all possible because of one guy. There will never be another like him. I am so lucky to have been there in the presence of Dirk. Thank you, big guy.

Joke's on you guys -- this thread has NEVER been pinned, not once since I've been a mod... It just stays at the top because Dirk is great.

Awesome post. Definitely hills, valleys, and finally the mountain top. What a ride! Love Dirk, and wish him the best. I am so going to miss him. As much fun a Luka is going to be, it will never be the same without Dirk. That's not bad, just different.

NBA: Retired Nowitzki could see himself as coach in a few years

BERLIN (Reuters) - Retired NBA champion Dirk Nowitzki, who spent 21 seasons at the Dallas Mavericks, could see himself returning to basketball as coach or manager in a few years time, the German said.

The 40-year-old future Hall of Famer ended his sparkling career last week after more than two decades at the Mavericks with whom he was crowned NBA champion in 2011 and was a 14-time All Star.

"After one or two years I can see myself being happy... as a coach or a manager," Nowitzki told Germany's Die Zeit newspaper in an interview to be published on Wednesday.

"I would like to be a mentor for a young player and... accompany them through their career in my very own way."

For now, Nowitzki is content to put his feet up and enjoy a glass of wine and a slice of cake, something he could not do for years as a professional player.

"In the past week I had some cake and I also had my first glass of wine after 10 years of abstinence," he said. "I was really warm inside after only a few sips. That felt good."

Nowitzki holds the record for having played the most seasons for the same club and is sixth in the all-time scorers list of the NBA.

Nagging injuries, however, took their toll on his body and continuing his career past the current season was impossible.

"What I did not want to happen under any circumstance was to say goodbye and be sitting at home, thinking 'damn, you would really like to play now. Why did you do this'," he said.

"But my body was not good. To be honest my foot where I had surgery last year was not well throughout the year. I knew it would not be getting any better."

Which offensive statistical categories did Dirk not rank very high in? I'm guessing offensive rebounds and dunks. Maybe 2nd chance points? Not sure what all is actually tracked when it comes to stuff like that. Other than that he's one of the very best in every category I'd think!

Assists... which can be a misleading category. Dirk created offense for everyone. That's what made him special.. He sucked in the defense when he'd get the ball in the post.. He'd kick the ball out and it'd usually get moved around the perimeter to the open man. That wouldn't be an assist for Dirk, but he'd be the one creating the opportunity. Dirk could put up huge numbers while being efficient and creating a lot of looks for other players. There's really not a lot of people that can do that.

Dirk to scarf Lamar Hunt at FC Dallas game Saturday. He has done this before and been to numerous games, as a season ticket holder it's always great to see him support FCD as other local sports teams.

They did a stat that showed that Dirk had one of the greatest "gravity" of any players in the NBA. This was post prime Dirk too

Homeboy working on his Fat Thor bod...

@BleacherReport: Dirk’s eating GOOD. Big man says he’s gained 15 pounds since retiring: “I have not worked out once. … I’ve had ice cream almost every day”
