Sounds like management only offered 1-year without further explanation. Weird stuff.
Good luck jjb. Go get your worth somewhere else.

No, man, damnit! I want JJB to remain a Mav! This is his home; this is where he has grown (as a player), this is where he shone; this is the system that he masters... please, God, do NOT let him sign with the Heat, please!!

I think this is as good a time to do this. Growing pains. Dirk isn't gonna play forever. We can't be tying our own hands with long term contracts of ultimately role players without having a solid base for the future first. I love JJB, but if we're gonna look at the future, it's now, not later when we're trying to unload bad contracts to make any sort of impact in the league.

JJ Barea fucking sucked, and I'm glad he's not on the team anymore.

Great job, Cuban. We don't need this ball hogger who shoots more than he passes.

Knicks want JJB. They can offer mini-MLE starting salary (~3M)

If he starts for them (because who else should?) than my point that he will never be a starting caliber point guard will get tested. I would really like to see that.

I'll be very interested to see where JJB lands and how he plays. He's a guy who can thrive...BUT...his success is very dependent on who's on the floor with him. He needs a guy who commands a double on the PnR (like Dirk) and a bigger guard who can help mitigate matchups (like Kidd or D-Steve).

I guess even Chandler can't handle everything on the defensive end with Amare, Carmelo and JJB on the floor.

A starting 5 of:

JJB
Fields
Melo
Amare
Tyson

Will be very porous defensively. That's going to be a high-tempo offense.

Yep, Mike D'Antoni - there's no way Chandler could hold a defense together with a coach like that...

They don't have the min-MLE. They have the room exception. 2.5Mil for a max of two seasons.

Hard to imagine him taking that.

Tyson had better be ready to protect the rim with that lineup, because all four guys except the opposing center are going to be living around it.

old thread - deserved bump on this note:
JJ Barea is the 11th undrafted player since NBA-ABA merger to reach 800 career games.
Last Monday against the Lakers, Josť Juan Barea became only the 11th undrafted player since 1976 to reach 800 career games. Out of the 60 drafted players in 2006, only 5 of them have played more games than JJ.

Torn right achilles -- tough to come back from, especially at 34... This thread bump was a jinx, lol.

Wow. Tragic. Was having a great year, but I just knew his body couldn't hand the heavy load. I knew he would give out eventually...but man, not ACL...that's almost definitely career ending. Ugh...

really sad. Big loss and yes if it is the achilles it seems to be the career end that sucks hard.

Legend. 2011 will always remain one of my top 3 sports moments. That Lakers series in which JJB dismantled the Champs... Epic!

Obviously sucks for the season, but might also end the career.

OMG - that is what I thought when I saw the injury last night - I actually felt bad for bumping the thread. I love JJB and all he has ever done for the Mavs. High character guy, proud citizen of PR - great teammate, hustle and energy.

JJ will be back. This isn’t career ending for him. He’s too much of a warrior to go out like this. Hate it for the guy. He’s been tremendous for us. Luckily he’s got Wes to help him with rehab and such. Hopefully he is in Brunson’s ear the whole time teaching him the art of throwing lob passes.

The problem is Wes never really came back from that injury and was in his 20s when it happened. Barea turns 35 in June and barely stays on the court as it is with other ailments.

Really is better for him to hang them up and go out playing well. Would suck to watch him do what Dirk tried to do and not even be a shadow of himself anymore. And Dirk's wasn't even close to as serious as an ACL. Serious foot/ankle injuries tend to be the death knell in the NBA.

I do wonder if he has an interest in coaching.

Wes was pretty much a 3&D guy, standing in the corner waiting for the ball...Barea lives by penetration, changing directions, his first step....he wont be anymore effective if he comes back with like 70%

Yeah Iím afraid that may have been the last we see of JJB. Will miss watching him. When heís cooking, heís so fun to watch. His 2001 was absolutely epic and he will always have a place in this organization if he wants it, no doubt.

Tear officially confirmed...sigh. It was a great run and no player gave more effort in a Mavs uniform.

I wonder if the incredibly tough stretch did it. Mavs were dealt a tough couple of weeks and tired muscles don’t protect tendons and ligaments as well

Pretty sure even if he retires because of the injury, the Mavs are going to give him a 10 day contract after he is medically cleared...just to give one more homegame...

JJB played the game like few others. He was a jitterbug who was a lot of fun to watch and could really put a big stamp on a game in a very short period of time. He was like the dribble/penetrating version of Vinnie "microwave" Johnson. He could put up points fast.

I wish him the best in his recovery, and I don't doubt he'll be back, even if only for a 10-day contract and a chance to say goodbye to the fans. Best wishes and a speedy recovery JJB!

Buena Salud!

Ugh, way to go dirt_dobber...

In all seriousness, I love JJB. We played what ended up being a dangerous game called Barea Bombs starting with the run in 2011. Essentially take a shot for every three he hit. Timing couldn't have been worse as the Mavs caught fire, but it was all worth it with the 'ship.

Best of luck in recovery, JJB!

@Mavs_FFL: Luka and JJ Barea have done a jumping high five before every game. Luka continues the tradition alone. https://twitter.com/Mavs_FFL/status/1084816482259922949
