Yeah. And its not just his offense, its his defense too. Its based on staying on front of guys to suck them into charges, he is going to lose speed there too (see Wes).

I think he is going to be with a 99% chance a net negative next season. But i get why the FO brings him back as a player, since he wanna keep on playing too. But i really hope in 2020 they have the talk about him moving into the coaching stuff. With Luka, Brunson, Wright and Seth longterm under contract there isnt really a longterm need for Barea.

Next season yeah. Locker room vet, can work with Brunson and deserves the chance to come back on a roster spot. But please just one more year

The conversation isnt about what he is to our future and more in defense of that he won't be "competent", and "he wasnt any good anyway". I dont think anyone is suggesting that he has a very big role going forward.

I
certainly hope he can coach or be a part of the staff in the future.

Count me in on the skeptical side of what JJB can be and bring to this team as a player going forward.

Absolutely love the guy for what he has done and accomplished for the Mavs up to this point.

I'd also love to eat crow should he come back, and would absolutely be pulling for a successful comeback to the Mavs if he is indeed close to the player we saw last year. I just don't see it being as clear cut. Achilles are majorly tough to come back from, not to mention the age factor.

He won't be competent. I meant that as a player. Iv already said I'm good with them signing him so he can rehab and I'm sure he's a positive locker room influence.

He wasn't good last year before the injury. He had a .495 true shooting percentage. He's 35. I don't get how this is controversial.

True shooting % alone would have you with DP/Maxi/Jackson/Broek/Brunson getting heavy minutes. One stat alone almost never tells the story. JJ will have such a limited role it's not worth the argument really, but for what role he will have he will be competent.

Reaves got the second two-way

Now just one regular roster spot left. Either left open or used to sign the second rounder, Roby

I'm not crazy about our frontcourt situation.
We have 4 legit PF/C bigs (KP, Maxi, Powell and Boban) and Boban's minutes will be limited and KP's probably should be. I'd like to see some insurance at center....if nothing else to help protect KP. We need one banger imo.

Mejri, Koufos, Mozgov, Monroe, Motiejunas, Noah, Nene, Zaza, Bogut, Jason Smith, and Tyler Zeller I think are about it in FA.

I honestly don't see why we don't just re-sign Salah and call it an off-season. Then use trades to address any areas of weakness or need during the season.

The league goes smaller every league, we also have DFS as a smallball PF...that should be enough to fill the FC minutes

It isn't just minutes though.
Powell getting tossed around like a rag doll is one thing but KP is another.

I'm not saying we should spend a lot but I think it would be wise to have one big banger to go up against the few bigger and stronger centers we will face on occasion. Shouldn't cost us more than the min and the last roster spot.

Dwight Howard likely gets waived. People prob don't wanna entertain it but you want a banger and rebounder? Even though he reportedly lost 25lbs in the offseason, It would give DP experience with real bigs in practice.

I'm not really a fan of any of the scrap heap list including Salah but if it had to be one of those it would be Monroe or Salah.

It's less about smaller and more about quicker. The league is just weeding out the bigs who are too slow to defend switches and can't shoot mid-3pt shots. Quick bigs who can shoot it a bit and hold their own on PnR will always be in play no matter the size.

Just for a day I'd like to have Salah on the team. It'd just be funny to see how tall our roster is with Mejri (7'2"), Porzingis (7'3"), and Marjonovic (7'3"). Then we even have Dwight Powell (6'11") and Maxi Kleber (6'11") both at just under 7' tall.

For fun I'd just want to see those 5 on the floor together for like the final 20 seconds of a blowout loss. Porzingis will have to run the point, right?

Salah shined with moments of greatness last season. Do we just sign him or should we reward loyalty with Devin Harris? I think the Mavericks have some tough decisions to make right now. Really, I wish Devin announced his retirement and we honored him right before adding him to the coaching staff.

What makes it tough though? There are other options available out there, and maybe the Mavericks still think they can make a trade. Are we at all interested in Lin as a backup? I hope not. Dwight Howard? I seriously would like to see him in Dallas on a limited minutes role. In 25.6 MPG last year he still averaged 9.2 RPG. He's a rebounding machine. People have their complaints with him, but he will only help improve the team.

I'd be fine with it. Rebound and get a few post buckets here and there in a limited role. I think RC would be good for him. Not sure he would be good for RC though.

Porzingis is definitely the PG on that lineup. He won the All stars Challenge in 2017 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUHL4J54lu0

Swap in Seth for DFS and that is probably our best closing lineup even though we'd give up some defense.

On another note, I hope Broek gets some serious PT this year because he isn't a bad defender and probably our best shooter after Seth.
It's a stretch but he has 3-D potential even though there will always be more 3 than D in his game.

Call me crazy, but I want to start Boban, KP, Powell, Kleber, and Doncic. Really set a tone. Push people around and be tall. Only Doncic dribbles

I'd love to see that too, maybe not as a starting lineup but in short stints during a game just to try something different to throw the opposing team off.

But with Carlisle we'd see a Barea/Brunson/Curry/Wright/Luka midget lineup before we'd see a jumbo lineup.

I would absolutely love to see that, but Carlisle prefers midget ball, so that's a tall order. Thankfully, this year our shorter guys are taller than ever for the most part.

If we wanted to add another veteran, could we stash Roby in Fresno, keep his rights, and sign him later in the season? Assuming we could be able to finally move Lee later in the season. What's the timetable with a second rounder anyway? You don't have to sign him right away, but will he eventually become a free agent?

I can tell you one player the Mavericks are never getting.

John Wall: "I’m never one of those guys that want to chase a ring or do those things. I’ve told people this before. You win a ring, nobody is going to talk about that years down the road. But if you build a legacy in a place, that’s going to go on for a long time."

I love that, and I feel like he has that Dirk Nowitzki mentality. Dirk built such a legacy, which is far more meaningful than the rings that Durant got in Golden State or the ones that LeBron got in Miami.

Lol, he doesnít have a Dirk mentality ó he has the most untradable contract in the league... Which is why heís trying to spin the fact that heís stuck with the Wizards into something that makes him look like a good guy.

Seriously, it's way too early for me to say anything like that. He's not even 30 yet. Dirk played in Dallas from his teens to nearly 41!

You literally said that in your previous post. Wall doesnít have a Dirk mentality at all.

Hate to break it to you, John, but in the NBA, rings are literally the ONLY thing anyone remembers or talks about years down the road- for better or worse.

I disagree with this take a bit. It's a team game so rings aren't the only thing that justifies a players legacy in my book. There are LOTS of guys who were worthy of a ring but didn't end up with one.

There are players who bring championships to their teams (Dirk, LeBron, Jordan, Bird, etc....) and there are players that have teams bring championships to them (KD, etc...).

Wall will never bring a championship to a team so he will only be remembered for having the most brutal contract of his time and strapping his team from acquiring a player who can bring a championship to him.

I said for better or worse- meaning definitely for worse. I don't agree with the mantra of "rings are all the matter" at all, but that is DEFINITELY the way the sports media and culture at large talks.

My point was that I think Wall is being hopelessly naive or foolish when says winning a ring is something "nobody is going to talk about a few years down the road." Rings are pretty much the only thing people talk about.

Roby 4years, 6.7 million dollar deal

15/15 regular roster
2/2 two-ways

Very much a minimum deal. Probably almost completely unguaranteed. Still, there are minimum roster holds so he doesn't hurt our cap space if we waive him. If he turns out, we guarantee him for all four years at a cheap rate and get full bird rights for years 5-10.

Two years guaranteed it looks like.

From Luke Adams at NBA Rumors.com

The Mavericks have signed second-round pick Isaiah Roby to a four-year, $6.7MM contract, agent Zach Kurtin of Priority Sports tells ESPN’s Bobby Marks (Twitter link).

As Marks details, the deal will be worth the minimum in years two through four, but it will have a $1.5MM cap hit in Roby’s rookie year. That $1.5MM cap charge represents the highest first-year salary in NBA history for a college player selected in the second round of the draft, according to Marks.

Although that’s a significant investment for the Mavs, they aren’t near the luxury-tax line and still had $1.8MM left on their mid-level exception. As such, it makes sense that they’d be willing to go a little higher in Roby’s first year in order to get him locked up for the next four. His second-year salary will also be guaranteed, while the third year will be non-guaranteed and the final season will be a team option, tweets Marks.

The No. 45 overall pick in June, Roby averaged 11.8 PPG and 6.9 RPG in his final season at Nebraska. The 6’8″ forward declared for the draft as an early entrant after his junior year, and his rights were acquired by the Mavs on draft night in a deal that sent No. 37 pick Deividas Sirvydis to Detroit.

Prior to signing Roby, the Mavericks had 13 players on guaranteed contracts on their books. Roby will be the 14th, while J.J. Barea – who has agreed to a new deal with Dallas but has yet to officially sign it – figures to be No. 15.
