Default Who is back - next years roster

Trying to distract me a little bit with looking into the future.

Under contract (yes, KP stays)
1) Doncic
2) KP
3) THJ
4) Brunson
5) Jackson
6) Lee

pretty sure back:
7) Barea
8) Kleber (he has his place in Dallas, he wont go hunting for a few bucks more)

probably back
9) DFS
10) Harris (veteran leadership with Dirk gone)

at least one big FA signing
11)

can we afford?
Powell (yes, he is opting out)

Questionsmarks:
Broekhoffs 1.5m TO
Salah
Burke

Looks like everyone is a high character guy but we cant bring all back if we wanto pick up some new guys too.And maybe there is the FRP taking roster spot too.

I think Broekoff is back. Plays hard, seems like he has a good IQ, and a good guy. I like Burke, but not sure he’ll be back. Might be a numbers game for him. I’d imagine Kleber is back, but someone could offer him decent money or a bigger role. I’d like to have him back though. What’s up with Kostas?

I cannot look at a list of names that does not include Dirk Nowitzki right now. It's too much to stomach right now.

We make the POs, and a trade or someone gets injured that clears a roster spot.....stay in shape Dirk!

Agree Burke is the most likely to not be back. I think that will depend on Barea though and/or who we sign in the off season.

I definitely want to see Broek back. Seems to be the perfect situational guy and great insurance at SG/SF. Especially since Lee will most likely be trade bait.

I'd love to see Devin, Mejri and Broek come back to fill the situational/insurance/vet leadership roles.

I think your 9 and 10 are gone. DFS wont get the big minutes he got a few months ago and he prob wants to get the best contract possible. Mavs will obvs come in lower than he's expecting.

I think Harris retires.

8. Why not see what offers are out there?
9. DFS will definitely try to get his last big contract so I dont expect to see him in a Mavs uniform
10. Harris retires

Powell opts out but re signs with the Mavs (big part of this team Dallas loves him)

Broek should be back
Salah will sign for min to be with Luka
Burke? Have no idea. Could see him look for more playing time in a different city.

Yeah, Devin being in the SL the last two games kinda indicates to me that he'll be retiring as well... Pretty sure he has a job on the coaching staff if he wants it.

I kinda feel like Devin May retire too. Seemed like he was shooting an awful lot and played more minutes than usual. I’d assume he’s got a position on Rick’s staff. So, does that bring Burke back?

I have coming back for sure:

Doncic
Porzingis
Brunson
Jackson
Hardaway Jr
Powell
Kleber
Broekhoff

We're stuck with Hardaway for now due to his contract. I think we extend Powell because the team loves him and he's a great fit as a rim runner off the bench. I think Kleber comes back at a good price. He's shown to be better as a 20 mpg defensive big off the bench IMO so I don't think any team is going to throw big money at him. And the money being the same I think he stays here. Broekhoff is an elite shooter on a cheap contract. Every team can use a specialist like that off the bench so I would keep him.

DFS is on the bubble. He might get pushed out if someone offers him too much money or if we land a star wing. He's a good defender and rebounder but still hasn't shown consistency shooting. If he comes back cheap then sure, but if someone offers him big bucks and we get someone like Middleton I don't see enough minutes for him anymore.

Barea, Harris, and Mej are beloved vets and I could see one of them coming back on the minimum depending on how we build the roster. If we land Kemba then Barea and Harris are probably gone I would think, but maybe Mej comes back as big man depth. If we land Vucevic then Mej is probably gone but maybe we keep one or both of Harris and Barea for guard depth.

I think Burke is a victim of the numbers game and will get a decent contract from another team with an opportunity for more minutes than we can give. I think Burke is gone.

I think we find a way to trade Lee or stretch waive him for more cap space this summer. I don't see him coming back.

Despite our deep sadness over Dirk's retirement, this can be a really exciting summer for our Mavs. We have flexibility to go any number of directions depending on who we sign. Our core players are flexible enough that we can make it work with any type of player, whether it's a guard like Kemba, a big like Vuc, or a dare I even say it with a star wing like KD, Kawhi, or Klay or a more mid tier guy like Middleton or Brogdon. I believe Cuban has already been quoted as saying they are focused on getting the best player they can get regardless of position.

Damn. Hes a solid guy who has grown as a player, it I think Im just tired of watching him get pushed around under the hoop. Hopefully he keeps working on that 3 ball. Kinda thought Maxi playing as well as he did would push Powell out the door since they play the same position, and Maxi has range and plays D.

I just hope it's for a reasonable price, and they still have room for a bigger time player.

Hard not to want a guy that wants to be here though, and it's time to start building continuity with players. He could also easily start with KP if need be and likely will if we don't land Vuc.

Ack, what a crappy way to start the off-season for me. Powell needs to move to another team. Mavs are too soft on D and rebounding to afford the luxury of having him on the roster imo. :-(

100% agree with you.
We really need money for starters now, and I feel like this type of profile could be filled with a MLE or by giving more minutes to Maxi.

Fantastic evaluation - I totally agree with your assessment.
Would be nice to have some roster continuity going into the season.
I'm all in on Vuc.

Yeah, I hope this doesn't mean Maxi is gone. We're going to have to get a starter quality center somehow and I'm beginning to think Maxi will be the odd man out.

I love what Powell brings off the bench but I'd hate to see THJ and Powell eat up a superstar salary as mere role players.

Re the looming Dwight Powell extension -- Per Cuban's words (and timing of talking about it), it must be an "opt in and extend" adding 3 more yrs after opt-in yr. No change to Mavs 2019 cap room. No word yet on exact dollars, but can't exceed $39.8885M over 3 yrs.

I am so happy about Dwight Powell returning. I know people have their complaints, but how many of you were complaining about J.J. Barea before our championship? They're excellent quality guys to have around not only on the basketball floor but in the locker room and the organization. If Dwight Powell is the hardest working player in the NBA, then you want that especially during a youth movement as it'll help push the other players into working similarly as hard.

extending him for 13/13/13 for an 29-32 year old roleplayer would be an overpay. Shouldnt be more than 10m, specially because he will be 30+ for most time of this extension.

And even with Walker, Barea would be back 99.9%. Doncic, Walker, Brunson Barea, cant see RC just wanting to have three playmaker on the roster

I'd expect they will get creative on his contract. As long as they don't re-overpay him I'm good with him being here. Powell has improved a lot, and it seems that he wants to be here so people need to stop expecting him to be a big banger. He's become our best finisher yet folks don't appreciate what positives he brings. There is very little balance in criticism and praise. Show me a Mav who goes harder out on the court than DP.

Kleber should be save to be back. He likes Dallas, Dirk still hangs around the city and his best buddy Powell is staying too.

The Mavs also have early birds and can go over the cap to re-sign him. I just see him leaving if another team gives him some crazy stupid money.

1) Doncic
2) KP
3) THJ
4) Brunson
5) Jackson
6) Lee
7) Powell
8) (Barea)
9) (Kleber)

That are the save bets for now

Yep Im glad hes back. Anyone thinking the front office doesnt view him as a big part of this team hasnt been paying attention.

He's become our best finisher yet folks don't appreciate what positives he brings. There is very little balance in criticism and praise. Show me a Mav who goes harder out on the court than DP.
Tried giving you some rep for this post, but it seems like I need to add more elsewhere. I 100% agree with you here.

How can they get creative on his contract? Do you mean going over the cap after we've signed FA?

I don't know if this is the best use of team resources if true. We need legit starters. Unless they believe DP is a de facto or literal starter next few seasons.

DP seems like a really great guy, hard worker and outstanding teammate. Yes, he's a professional and a great character guy, BUT he is a finesse player. He plays soft, is not a very good rebounder and is far too often out of position on defense. Yes, he's a nice rim runner, but when playing against quality NBA talent that actually plays defense, those open lanes are rarely there for him, and he disappears for stretches during games. I completely understand why people like him, but he's an offensive luxury imo. With the addition of KP, the Mavs are going to be even better offensively, so I'd prefer a more physical player who can add some 3 and D, and that's just not Powell imo especially for $10m+.

I'd prefer adding Vuc, keeping Salah, and adding another solid 3 and D wing to go with Jackson and DFS and let Powell go.

Completely agree!

We need strength in our front court so that should be our focus. And KP does make DP somewhat expendable considering DP's role and how much we'll pay him.
Any large contract should be given to a solid 3rd option starter and I'd rather that be for a solid 3&D wing or a solid center that provides two of the three (defense/offense/rebounding). Vuc would provide offense and rebounding so he seems like an ideal target.

I can live with THJ's horrible contract because that was a necessary piece to acquire KP but it would be foolish imo to vastly overpay for another bench caliber player when it isn't exactly necessary and there are other more important needs to address. Especially when we already have a much cheaper one on the roster who is more versatile and even a little younger.

I have the bad feeling that the Powell extension is going to be the maximum possible 3/39m. Opting in his 10m and then additional 3/39.

I think that is what he agent is going to demand for not testing the FA market trying to get a 4/60m contract somewhere blablabla.

Everything over 10m would suck because at the end Powell is just a roleplayer.

Everything I've seen estimates his contract extended to 4/50.

Now the question is, will that contract be tradable?

Ugh. I thought someone said 3/39 was the max we could offer. That's terrible if true.

It's a good question, and I think someone like Faried might be a smart get for half the price and similar production. Faried averaged close to 15/10 with Capela out.

Mavs love Powell though. And bigs are always overpaid.

Thats the same. Its opting in his 10m player option and then adding three years 39m.

So at the end its a total of 4/50.

I saw your Ed Davis post in the other thread and was about to say, "well, actually..."

So, here we are.

this.

If he rolls into next season playing exactly how this season ended I'd rather see him do it as a Mav. 4/50 may be a bit steep given how he has started the last cpl season... It would be hard to read comments in the GD threads. The last 2 seasons he has turned it on a lot in the 2nd half. Theres so many directions we could go and hopefully it's going to be fun to watch unfold

A wasteland of a 2nd half of meaningless minutes in meaningless games, and still the guy was a lackluster rebounder and a windmill on defense. The Mavs are clearly short in the rebounding, defense, and 3-pt shooting departments. Powell doesn't address any of these deficiencies. At 4/50 he would only exacerbate them. KP already more than makes up for any of Powell's offensive output in garbage minutes, and that's not counting any new free agents. I'd rather pay a 3-pt sharpshooter than Powell. Doncic/KP pick and roll is gonna be deadly. There will be plenty of highlights there without having to wait for Powell to have an open lane dunk against 2nd teamers in garbage time for $10m+/yr. SMH

Oh yeah, and as far as tradeable contract... we couldn't get rid of him at $9m or less, so there is no way we will be able to offload him at $10m +, especially if he gets 4/50. That is just mindboggling stupid imo. The Mavs were a 2nd half mess after the trade. Somebody had to fill up the stats. Powell took advantage of the opportunity. Good for him, but let's not be braindead and forget about the circumstances which allowed him to produce those numbers.

Edit: I had to add this thought that popped into my mind. Way back in the day, I forget the year, there was an All-Star game during the Magic-Bird era, and I remember that Tom Chambers beat out Rolondo Blackman for the MVP because he scored 30, but Blackman had a great game, and he hit the clutch free throws at the end of the game that allowed the West to win in OT. Larry Bird said something to the effect...30 points? My grandma could score 30 points with Magic passing the ball to her. LOL Just a reminder, Luka isn't your average, run of the mill PG, even as a rookie, so don't underestimate how much better he made Powell look than he actually is.
