Hopefully Luka is getting all those missed easy layups out of his system this game

KP put-back dunk was sweet
and I never expected his ball handling to be as good as it appears.

Luka doesn't really look more in shape versus last season if I'm being totally honest from the eye test.

Not that the pass was good, but Kleber has no clue how to catch a pass rolling to the basket. It is literally the huge difference between him and Powell.

JJackson in 19 min so far - 0 points, 0 reb.
I like the guy a lot but he needs to provide more.
Kleeber 20 min so far - 2 points, 2 reb.
They looked ok last night - but we need everyone!

This is why you have THJ on the team. He is the guy who stops the bleeding.

I would like some rule in the gym. Luka can't leave until he makes 10 consecutive free throws. Is that fair?

I agree...but the good thing about both is they don't hurt the team even on off games.

Yeah, I think slipped up a little bit with his diet, he looked noticeably better two month ago. He looks similar now, but probably has a stronger core, so that could be something.

Positive: There's a Mav's game.

Negative: Preseason games suck and are a total waste of time. The regular season can't get here soon enough.

Also, I love Maxi, but he's sparing me to death so far this preseason. :-(

When Luka and KP were together on the floor, we looked pretty good. Let's leave it at that and go from here.

I feel like there are almost too many secondary chefs in the kitchen. Who gets squeezed out? It's either going to be THJ or Curry that find themselves on the bench because I just don't know where the minutes are...esp if Barea comes back.

Love Rick but the decision last night to not play either of the duo and to leave Luka in so long at a time tonight just seems weird.

Brown got super aggressive with Luka in the 3rd and Luka lacked situational awareness offensively. Still, he's so fun to watch...unless he is at the FT line.

Yeah as fun as it was in game 1 to see Jackson get some buckets in, he is gonna have to do something other than score if he wants to keep his minutes up. I thought that was pretty obvious tonight with KP and Luka playing. KP, Luka, THJ, Seth can all shoot or score in some way, guys like Powell and Wright will get enough in as well. What we really need is more defense and more rebounding. And so far in almost 40mins Jackson has 1 rebound. Kleber isn't doing much better in that category either. Although the defense has allowed a lot of easy looks which results in points and non-rebounding situations. I knew we needed Powell to be big for us but I think after 2 preseason games my biggest non-KP/Luka takeaway is that the ancillary pieces need to step way up in rebounding if this team wants to have a shot at the playoffs and Powell might need to at minimum flirt with 9 boards a game. If He and Kleber can't provide more than their past track record has shown, and if the others like Jackson can't step it up then this team won't push for the playoffs this year imo.

KP and Luka are super fun to watch though. Regardless of how this season goes it's going to be fun to watch.

Honestly I liked what I saw from the starters.... Hopefully Dwight helps with some of the spacing and rebounds when he returns but the clearest thing to me is that we don't have a center. Griffin and Drummond abused us down low. We need more speed at the center spot and even though I hate him, I was just thinking of how much better Dwight Howard could be in that role as a starting center. I like what we have in terms of our bench but by the end of the season I believe our starting center spot will be the biggest hole.

I love our depth - but keeping everyone happy will be a test for coach Rick.

Reese Konkle@RKonkle_Mavs

All in all, a good showing. They certainly looked like the better of the two teams.

-I reallly, really like their bench. Carlisle will have them humming.
-Really hope they mix up their defenses/play to their personnel instead of just standard stock defense.
-KP was impressive

Bullets:
  • Luka and KP obviously. Both had trouble hitting shots, but it's hard to not get excited about the season after this first showing.
  • Luka's floater were awesome, but it only took one game to doubt his 3pt and FT shooting again. It's not that he is a bad shooter at all, he just seems to take way too many difficult shots, which in theory shouldn't be necessary this season. The woes on the line however are just crazy.
  • I hope the Mavs figure out how to unleash KPs full potential and not only treat him as 7-foot shooter. Should be a playmaker as well.
  • Many said the team's overall success highly depends on KP's health. While true, I think the supporting cast plays as much if not even a bigger role. It's important for Wright, Maxi, and DFS/Jackson to hit their shots. I'm not concerned, but this game certainly didn't make me more confident either.
  • I love Maxi, but it's easy top see why Powell is the better fit in the starting unit. We need an elite role-man.
  • I'm fairly sure we'll bitch about THJ vs. Curry minutes all season. Seth didn't play as much in both games so far, which is puzzling.
  • Brunson is just a good player and will lead the Mavs second units for years to come.
  • Boban is fun, but as primary backup big his limitations are obvious.

The biggest concern for me right now is Wright.
Seems to be completely lost in our system. I know it is early and will take time but he looks to either be injured or confused. Doesnít look confident or comfortable.

And as Iíve mentioned all off season, we need more strength on this team....especially in the front court.

Remember when we tried to turn DSJ into a sg as well? Can't just assume these pgs can play off the ball no matter how positionless today's nba is.

Still, as long as he gives us some sort of Marcus Smart production, then I think it'll be fine.

I think we need some sort of waterbug guard because we definitely lack quickness at the guard spots.

I would agree with you. As far as expectations, Wright has underwhelmed me so far, but he is new to the team and system, so it'll take time. I'm hoping he'll settle in no later than 20 games into the season.

At this point, I'm looking forward to seeing what Powell can bring when he gets back. I'm trying not to expect too much outside of his skill set, but we seriously need some rebounding help. If he stays inside and plays with energy and grabs some boards, then I'll whine a whole lot less than if he's hanging out on the perimeter bricking 3's while waiting for rolling dunks in garbage time.

I've never been much of a MS fan but I do agree that is what we need playing next to Luka. I don't think Wright has the bulldog mentality that Smart has but yeah, similar production would be great.

I do agree about a waterbug guard and would add that we could use more athleticism and strength in our core. Powell will help out somewhat in that regard.
