Why the fuck Bogdan couldnt hit free agency one freaking year later so he signs with his buddy Luka and we have the additional ballhandler

He hasn’t looked comfortable imo. Too much of him bringing the ball up and passing right away, and not enough dribbling and dancing with the ball. Could just be good defense, but he doesn’t look rusty or out of shape to me.

Luka looks out of shape...again. I know it's old hat and his awesomeness overcomes it, but yeah.

First game, but since we have nothing else to go by I think I can reiterate this is what happens when you don't take FA or the draft seriously.

He’s not out of shape, he was just in the olympics. They have been talking all offseason about how he is coming in ready to go because he never took any time off.

Dude he just sucks tonight. It happens. I'm actually tired of him bringing the ball up vs tight defense every possession. Hunter played Simmons level defense on him.

mavs looked bizarrely lost on their offensive sets and entirely unable to adapt to overly aggressive defense by the hawks, just bad coaching altogether, doesn't reflect well on a coach's debut.

Yea. I don't think Luka looks out of shape. It looked like he had a good defender really keyed in on him while he was faced with 2 7 footers waiting on him in the paint with long wingspan. He made some real bad decisions trying to force lobs. (Not) Shockingly guys couldn't hit open looks either.

Correct me if I'm wrong but we gave THJ a raise and extension, doesn't that mean he should be any closer to a usable defender and maybe improved handles where he could provide something extra? Or does throwing money at a guy well into his career NOT mean he is going to be what you actually need on the roster all the sudden?

Maxi, DP are borderline useless still? Neither can rebound or defend the PnR?

Bullock and Brown were brought in to help the garbage defense and somehow we get worse and those 2 were involved in about 4 absolutely terrible possessions.

Luka...he gets a free pass.

We went completely limp after they scored a few consecutive buckets. Every aspect fell apart. That is players being mentally weak. When you have the same guys who can't handle adversity well, you can't expect much different results.

It's game 1 and we were gonna lose this one against any team in the league with what we did tonight. Probably even lose against 3 WNBA teams and some college teams. I expect a better effort effort better result next game.

Porzingis was awful, too. I don’t expect it to work right away, but I don’t remember Hunter being the Luka stopper, before.

I noticed this too. Like 2-3 of them had no chance. The lane looked way too crowded. It’s not necessarily an indictment of the offense, but it’s something Luka will have to adjust to. He’s going to see different situations and geometry than before.

Luka may be the most talented kid in the league but he’s not always cerebral and plays pretty dumb way more than a player should. His whole game is pushing is recklessly and then is incredible at punishing teams for weakness, but literally all teams need to do to negate him is a packed paint with a shot blocker and he becomes a one-dimensional player with a mediocre jump shot. Only a couple of teams in the league can do that and the Hawks with Capela/Collins are one. Clippers are another.

That said, this one is on Luka. He’s gotta grow up and learn to overcome that. It isn’t going to be overnight, but Kidd succeeds and fails based on that one thing. Period. If he can’t make progress with Luka, then he needs to go. If he can, then we can be special.

Anyway, this loss stung, but Hawks are Mavs kryptonite and I’m not giving up on the season but what a stinker.

What I learned from tonight... Kidd can still start his Mavs career 81-1.

Yea. Not an indictment of the offense because it's wayyy too early. We don't have any patterns to collect data from yet. We also made it look incredibly good in the preseason. Obviously against varying levels of opposition.

Nah, Kidd has to prove himself just like anyone else would. But your first 2 posts are dogging on him. Clearly not jokes. It was a bad take because it's too early to claim all that. Just own it

Was expecting a loss, the Hawks are just much better and deeper than us 2 through 15, but boy, did not expect such a beatdown. Hopefully we win the next 3.

Honestly I thought we had momentum from an incredible offseason and high spirits, plus we play well on the road so Ithought we would win by a few. Atlanta IS a better deeper team ATM and we were probably due to come back to earth after 4 straight.

Let's see how we respond.

No pick and roll man and trying to run post play to soothe the ego of a guy who sucks balls with a smaller player on him. What could go wrong?

It's just one game but man you'd think Kidd would realize that Powell isn't a starting center.

In fact I'm not sure why this organization continues to try and force the issue with Powell as a starter.

Also, it's been like 4 or 5 years now and we are still using DFS on the opposing teams PG's.

And because we can't use THJ on the PG because he gets burnt worse than Luka, dfs is all we got in the current S5.

Bullock looked bad on a few possessions but I'm already wanting to see Bullock over DFS in the S5.

THJ is already a problem again, especially defensively. Frank can guard PGs, get him in there with Luka, or try Brown idk. Something else needs to happen because the roster isn't built well enough to defend the perimeter AND function effectively on offense. You get one or you get the other.

The overrating of DFS will go down as one of the great tragedies of the team not trying to improve the roster more. And I like him, but he just doesn't possess many talents.

Kleber too. These are overused undrafted guys that can be in the rotation, but they are just relied on too much.

Again though, can only judge it by what we've seen so far, but some of these things have been an issue for years now.

I would have liked to have seen a lineup of Luka, Frank Ntilikina, Josh Green, Eugene Omoruyi, and Moses Brown for defense to see if that worked to slow them from scoring. We were already losing the game in the 3rd quarter. But I guess you can't have more than 13 guys on the active roster.

Definitely Omoruyi over Maxi and Willie, probably DP too. He's energy and IQ on improv plays. Good rebounder and has a nose for the ball. All intangibles that we often miss. Hell omi over DFS if he's gonna play like he did tonight.

Kleber too. These are overused undrafted guys that can be in the rotation, but they are just relied on too much.

Again though, can only judge it by what we've seen so far, but some of these things have been an issue for years now.
This. It only took one game for us to come back to this conversation. They squeezed everything out of these guys probably two years ago.

Not growing pains but a structural issue with offense. Quit with the ineffective post ups and contested mid range shots. This isn't 1960s high school basketball. Maybe we need to practice the 2 hand set shot.

In fact I'm not sure why this organization continues to try and force the issue with Powell as a starter.

Also, it's been like 4 or 5 years now and we are still using DFS on the opposing teams PG's.
Of course it's hindsight but the Mavs have done everything wrong and Atlanta everything right since the 2018 draft.

My knee jerk reaction is that the Luka championship window while in Dallas died in the 2019 offseason and 2020 draft. To come out of the 2020 draft without one functional player is truly an amazing feat of unlikely low probability.

Yes next year - when our 2019 offseason acquisitions and 3 picks from 2020 start paying dividends. By next year we will make the strategy of favoring contested 2 point midrange shots by suboptimal post up and midrange players actually take the league by storm. Who needs floor spacing when we can crowd the lane and elbow with players who are not good at basketball in the midrange and post up game.

Go Mavs!

As my friends on Mavs Moneyball said if the same basic players who were the best offense in the league 2 years ago and a top 8 offensive team last year suddenly can't play offense then that's on a structurally bad offensive scheme. If a packed paint is a problem then ask yourself why is the paint packed? You are pointing at the wrong person.

Relax. The Lakers and Suns play tonight and one of them will be 0-2 after the game is over. Lets all hope that it's the Lakers! ;-)

Did your friends also mention that other coaches and teams are smart and are fully capable of figuring out how to slow that scheme down over time? Those great offenses fell in the first round of the playoffs both years. Those great offenses came with piss poor defense. About pointing at the wrong guys, The guys responsible for that are no longer here.

I didn't get to watch the game until this morning, but boy, what a bunch o negative Nancys on here after one game for a team with a new coach, a new offense and a new defense, against a team with more talent that made no siginificant changes after going to the conference finals.

I expected the debate here to be about how the Hawks got the best deal in the Luka trade, since they got 2 lottery players. I was going to defend the trade, since the Mavs would have never taken Trey, since they thought had their point guard of the future in Dennis Smith Jr...who is hanging on by a thread in Portland. We'd have ended up with Jared Jackson or Mo Bamba, and a very high lottery pick in 2020.

Hey. Its one game, and the Mavs are trying to do a lot of new things. I'd give them more than a minute before throwing in the towel. This season depends on what KP does, and this night he moved well and blocked some shots and altered several more...unicorn type moves, just not enough of them...yet.

Must spread rep.

I guess I was just overly hyped for this game after the fun they had in the preseason. They just looked scared and hesitant.

But, stepping back, it is 100% expected that we'd struggle in this game. We'll look really good against bad defenses, but a new offense will struggle against what was the 2nd best defense in the league that only got better in the offseason.

This experiment may fail in the end, but we won't know until ASB at the earliest.
