Default Gil Brandt have been named Contributor Finalists!

One of the most important figures in franchise history could soon be the next Dallas Cowboy inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. Former team executive and scouting pioneer Gil Brandt is one of two contributor finalists up for induction into the 2019 Hall of Fame class.

One of the original hires of franchise, Brandt served as Dallas’s vice president of player personnel for the first 29 years of the franchise, serving side by side with general manager Tex Schramm and head coach Tom Landry.

A legendary scout who revolutionized the front office position, Brandt is recognized for introducing metrics analysis and a computerized system as a method of player evaluation.

His specialty was the draft, where Brandt oversaw some of the most iconic draft picks in team history, spanning from Roger Staubach all the way to Michael Irvin.

He was the first scout to start regularly plucking athletes from other sports such as track and basketball and turn them into football immortals such as Cornell Green and Bob Hayes. Brandt was the original UDFA miner, snaring prospects such as Drew Pearson, Cliff Harris and Everson Walls.

He also helped kick off the spectacle that is the NFL scouting combine.

Here’s the complete list of those he brought to Dallas who he’d be joining in Canton.

Bob Hayes (1965-1974)
Bob Lilly (1961-1974)
Forrest Gregg (1971)
Herb Adderley (1970-1972)
Jackie Smith (1978)
Lance Alworth (1971-1972)
Mel Renfro (1964-1977)
Michael Irvin (1988-1999)
Mike Ditka (1969-1972)
Randy White (1975-1988)
Rayfield Wright (1967-1979)
Roger Staubach (1969-1979)
Tommy McDonald (1964)
Tony Dorsett (1977-1987)

Brandt was among those purged by Jerry Jones when he acquired the franchise in 1989, but he remained in the Dallas area and in NFL circles. To this day, Brandt is still an analyst at NFL.com at 85-years-old-he even has a Twitter presence.

A Contributor is defined as someone who has “made outstanding contributions to professional football in capacities other than playing or coaching”. Each year, the Hall of Fame committee inducts Contributor or Senior members, who must receive 80% of the vote from the the selection committee, just like the players.

CowboysWire congratulates Brandt on being named a Hall of Fame finalist, and will look forward to his potential enshrinement next summer. Be on the lookout for who could possibly join and enter the Hall of Fame with Brandt as it’s revealed.
