But it's also over the course of a game where someone like Kanter will grab offensive rebounds and get easy buckets and by the time you look you that guy has 14 points and 10 rebounds

Zubac did this to Dallas in both Clippers games.

It puzzles me because they see the defensive deficiency on the boards yet they think it won't hurt them in playoff games.

Good PG's expose this team 90% of the time and I've seen enough now to realize neither Richardson or DFS is going to solve that problem.

I also believe Kleber wears down late in games because once teams get him defending inside they just tire him out so his legs are zapped by the 4th qtr.

KP is just puzzling.....

You can clearly see they want to get him the ball inside and he's been aggressive taking shots inside but now the ref's are calling him for every offensive foul in the books lately.

He can't create his own shot so that leads to him going half of qtr's without a shot.
Excellent analysis and agree with all of your points. What you are basically saying is this team is fatally flawed even with a top 5 or 6 player in the league and certainly the best under 25 player in the world. He won't be under 25 forever and I see no path forward unless this team is torn down and rebuilt with different pieces.

I hate to use this word because it is so overused in the NBA, but this team really is soft both mentally and physically, and it's getting frustrating to watch, because the ceiling is enormously high. Our best is a 62-win-team, and our worst is a 42-win-team.

I predicted 42 wins this season

But reality is the Mavs are .500 team at best.

The trade deadline will let us know if they are willing to improve the roster this season or if they will just say let's wait it out for another offseason to see if they can get themselves a big fish.

Bottom line is I doubt very many fans on here expected the Mavs to be a .500 team or 8th seed type of squad.

How does the front office continue to put a band aid on these same two issues late in games?

Seems like any center you throw out there is going to feast on the Mavs. But what bothers the most is why this team refuses to drive to the basket and just take the easy buckets when they know every 4th qtr in crunch time their shots usually aren't going to fall.

13-5: Portland crushes Dallas on the offensive glass
The Mavericks consistently lose the rebounding battle every night. Enes Kanter single handled tied the entire Dallas offensive rebounding production by himself and in large part because he out worked the Mavericks. Kristaps Porzingis was one of the many Dallas bigs to underperform while rebounding; though he had eight total, he didnt record one past the 7:29 mark of the third quarter. He played twelve minutes without getting a finger on a rebound.

2-10: Dallas goes cold from deep in the fourth quarter
Dallas shot 16 of 31 from distance in the first 36 minutes before going ice cold in the fourth. The team as a whole scored just 21 points, in no small part because the three ball left the Mavericks entirely. Maxi Kleber missed two wide open looks that went in and out that really stand out as turning points in the contest.

A scary, foreshadowing late-game collapse
The latter part of the fourth quarter in tonight’s game was a good example of what will likely happen in the playoffs (if the Mavs are fortunate enough to make it there). Dallas can survive late-game surges from bad teams that have the lottery on their minds, but against guys like Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, it won’t fly.

There wasn’t one specific play that the Mavs failed on that led to their ultimate demise. It was a large stretch of little mistake after little mistake after little mistake. Things like not boxing out, not playing team defense, and taking wild shots on crucial possessions. These are the things that need to get ironed out in the regular season, or there won’t be any success in the playoffs.

The Mavs role players have to step up when the game matters most. Luka can’t do everything.

THIS!

Yet I hear fans I talk to say they don't want to part ways with anyone. I suppose every fanbase falls in love and overrates their own talent.

50 posts and the vast majority of them complaining about hypotheticals. No one here would hesitate to make a move that upgrades the team talent-wise.

No wonder Underdog bailed on this board.

LMAO

Sports forums are like barber shops where guys talk sports all day.

Some people will praise their teams while others will point out flaws.

Everyone has their own opinions and I don't see why people get offended over it. I've never seen a forum that was 100% just positive talk

Go to the NBA 2K basketball forums and you hear 50 people love the game and 50 people hate the game LOL

As someone said above, in so many word and we all have said for what seems like years; we desperately need another creator. A player that can put the ball on the floor and get to the rim. Score or draw fouls. We are playing Luka with a bunch of guys who can’t do that. KP, Maxi, DFS. J-Rich and THJ can in small doses. Brunson in small doses, but he and Burke are just too small.

It’s what they were after with Haliburton— he can drive, shoot, pass and is a good defender. It may mean we have to trade KP to get our #2 playmaker. Kyle Lowry would be a great fit as he checks all boxes but he would cost a lot in assets as well as to re-sign and he’s old.

Mavs should absolutely be aggressively looking to trade for Derozan or Lowry.

Agreed. Is Derozan younger? He brings perhaps the best midrange game in the league and can create his own shot off the dribble. Lowry has a penchant for big game big shots but is also aging out fast and looks a little out of shape this year. One of these 2 could help the short term window within the much longer Luka window.

Too much stock is put into age sometimes

If a guy can help solve or fix some of your glaring issues you go for it.

The Suns unlike the Mavs didn't allow Chris Paul age to scare them off and look at them now. He didn't fit their roster timeline with Booker and Ayton but they accelerated their window.

Mavs are just way too picky at times.

But we have to have everyone within a few years of each other, and our veteran has to be a bench player and know karate to stand up for Luka.

What do you know Boban is bigger than Kanter and he actually faired well because of it.

Which begs the question why should it take a game and half to determine that Boban is a better matchup for Kanter as opposed to Powell?

These decisions just make you scratch your head at times.

Sure they can get away with it vs bad teams but it just seems like vs the good teams it's the same old exact script late games over and over again .
A lot of the time they get broken plays, turnovers, and bad threes that are definitely some jacked up nonsense. The threes they got this time were good. Right now a wide open 3 for Maxi is a great shot. He's shooting 46.5%.

51.8% in March on threes

Mavs fans alternate between wanting shooters, then devaluing the shooters we have

He's actually been ok tonight

Much better defense on Lillard than what we got in the last game.

When I said that he was right there with Luka at 11 pts in the 1st. Had DFS on skates a few times. It may work here and there, but I don't believe in the strategy.

Ever notice we usually make adjustments and win round 2?

That’s what a good coach does

wow what a turnaround...
luka hitting his first 8 three's helped i'm sure
not sure if the blazers just missed shots they'd normally hit - maybe Dame was due for some of that since he just about hits whatever he throws up normally...

Dallas went 3-2 against the Nuggets, Clippers x2, and Blazers x2 in these five games. The two losses were winnable. Well maybe not the first Clipper game. Still solid against three playoff teams.

that's actually not bad - we don't necessarily need a cornerstone that will be here for the next 10 years. but if we can fill in our needs for the next 2-3 years hopefully either our rooks will grow into their roles or we can find the next FA.

how many of our pieces around Dirk were in the latter half of their career? main difference is our current superstar is only 22. Dirk was what 33 when we won our chip?

Hmmm

I'm not sure that they made any adjustments at all

Portland just didn't shoot well and Luka shot lights out that was the only thing I noticed.

We still put DFS on Dame and Richardson on McCollum
.

In fact the only thing different might have just been Boban playing a few more minutes in a stretch where RC finally had seen enough of Powell vs Kanter.

But I'll take it since we avoided a season sweep by them

I'd love to get DeRozan but I just don't see the Spurs trading with the Mavs. The only time I've ever recalled that happening was with Avery Johnson coming to Dallas later in his career right?

My top two targets on the wish list would be Gordon or Drummond

Gordon would fix the perimeter defense giving the Mavs an elite perimeter defender for once.

Drummond fixes the rebounding issue which helps the defense simply because they won't be giving up all those 2nd chance points anymore.

But there's a rumor being reported that Portland is really high on Gordon and Drummond is headed to either LA or Brooklyn via a buyout.

If either of those moves happen you can pretty much stick a fork into this season because with Drummond and AD on that frontline no one out west is beating the Lakers and Gordon going to Portland makes them even scarier when you consider they can pair Gordon and Roco together on their defense.

Unforgettable night by Luka...8/9 on 3s & 37 points* in just 3 quarters & the night over after that because the Mavs were up big. Dallas wins 132-92 in Portland. Luka tied his career high in 3s & tied the most pts by a Mavs player thru 3 quarters (also Dirk) in the last 25 seasons.

Luka is shooting 37.1% from 3 on the season now — 43.4% over his last 20 games.
Luka Doncic in blowout over Blazers: 37 points, 13-19 FG, 8-9 3s in 30 minutes. Rick Carlisle: "When he’s in that rhythm and is mixing in the drives and the 3s, he’s virtually impossible to deal with."
"All I got to say is I should have made the last one." -- Luka on his 8-of-9 3-point shooting via the postgame show.

Luka past 5 games...
32.6 PPG
10 APG
7.4 RPG
53% FG
46% 3PT

and for this season...38 GP
29 PPG (career high)
9.1 APG
8.4 RPG
48% FG (career high)
37% 3P (career high)
75% FT

Mavs are 8th in the West (2.5 back from 5th)*

Josh Richardson (Tonight he scored 21 points on 8 of 11 shooting)What was it like watching Doncic? "It was like I wasn't even crashing [the boards] anymore. It was like when he shot it I was running back on defense. He's special, man. Not a lot of guys that can find that groove that he did tonight. Yeah, he was in a zone."

Carlisle credits Coach Mosley for the defensive adjustments for tonight’s game. Finney-Smith awarded the defensive player of the game belt.
