i predict a 54 win season, good for the 3rd or 4th seed in the west
and a subsequent playoff-run that will eventually lead to the 2nd championship

captainobvious said it first, i m jumping the bandwagon
the whole team is going to click, nobody thought the mavs could win it all 3 years ago

believe in miracles!

Somewhere between 50-55 wins. Healthy Dirk + pieces that fit next to him is a recipe for a good season. I don't know if that many wins will get us higher than the 5th or 6th seed, but it would be great to see us back, competing in the playoffs.

I am actually expecting the Mavericks to win 46-47 games with this squad. I so hope I am wrong and that they win 5 to 10 more.

I see 50+ as a possibility for a a 5-7 slot in the West.

Really depends on the big guys tbh. If guys like Dalembert, Wright, B. James, can hold down the fort then I have no doubt Dirk and Ellis will light up opposing defenses. I could envision the mavs making a trade deadline deal for a big and them making some teams very uncomfortable in the playoffs.

The Mavs hate has officially gone too far - Chris Sheridan has us ranked at #25 in his Summer Power Rankings...

Quote:
The summer’s biggest losers. Can’t fault Mark Cuban for going all-in cap wise when players such as Dwight Howard and Chris Paul were going to be on the market, but sometimes all-in pushes backfire. If they start 2-18 or 3-17, will Dirk want out? One would think so.
I can't say I agree with a lot of predictions about the Mavs this season, but he can't seriously think we're WORSE than last season just because we missed out on Dwight Howard, can he?? We improved at every position this summer...

Lol 2-18 or 3-17. Chris Sheridan is a hack who was canned at ESPN. Very likely he has a drug problem (or at least developed one) because his reporting has grown more and more suspect.

Kings above the Nuggets? Jazz 23 even though they are tanking at the rate that the 76ers obviously are? He even lectures Pop about being a bad coach, criticizes his tactics, and says he is no longer "great". I think I lost brain cells reading the damn thing.

Sheridan predicted the Clippers to miss the playoffs last year (or the year before, not sure). Just saying...

Saying that we are the summer's "biggest losers" is patently ridiculous.

Mavs
+Calderon
+Ellis
+Ellington
+Dalembert
+Harris
+Blair
+Mekel
+Larkin/Ledo from draft
-Collison (min deal)
-Brand (only got 1yr/4mill)
-Kaman (only got 1yr/3.2mill)
-Mayo (3yr/24mill)
-Morrow (min deal)

Lakers
-Howard
-Jamison
-Artest
+Kaman
+Young
+Kelly
+Farmar

Thunder
-Martin
-Maynor
+draft pick

At least on paper the Mavericks upgrade a bunch of spares, fogeys and guys no one wanted for a full roster. Thunder did almost nothing to upgrade and lost a lot of talent. Lakers absolutely blew it up and lost Artest, Howard and Jamison for nothing. How you can say that one team that added probably 4-8 wins with a stronger, longer-term roster is the "biggest loser" and teams that did nothing but bleed talent were better is beyond me. We absolutely were not the biggest winners in free agency (at least according to an NBA 2k analysis, but perhaps we may be most improved in actual play), but we were definitely in the top 5-10 teams as far as improvement through free agency.

I think 50 wins is reasonable. People are underrating the hell out of us. If we had Dirk the whole year last season we could've made the playoffs... and not only do we have Dirk healthy, but we've literally upgraded at every position.

Jose>Collison
Ellis>Mayo
Harris>Mike James
Blair>Brand (at this point of their careers)
Ellington>Morrow
Dalembert>Kaman (he may not be considered better than Kaman but he's definitley a better fit for our team)

I can't wait for the season to start... we're gonna suprise a lot of people

Never have been able to take anything Sheridan says seriously.. If he thinks taking a team that didn't make the playoffs to a potential 6th seed is the worse then everyone else must have found a hidden superstar. His whole article is absolute trash, huge upgrades gained asssets and a number 2 scorer. Give me a break

Very good point. Let's look at 2012-13's +18.96 player efficiency as being part of an asterisk season. Going back I am considering the 2003-04 season an asterisk season as well with the Antoine Walker experiment.

That being said I want to analyze his efficiency from year to year and calculate what I think we can expect for this season.

Since the 2004-05 season he has been on a decline aside from a slight incline in the 2009-10 season. I think a happy Dirk is just as important if not even more so important than a healthy Dirk. He's happily married with a baby daughter. Also he must be far more excited about this team than the one he was surrounded by last year. Also even though he still had Jason Kidd and Jason Terry from the championship team surrounding him in the 2011-12 season there was talk all along about it being the last with Jason Terry here.

That being said I can only give my best guess. I think that he'll have a player efficiency that should be much better than that of the last two seasons and potentially even better than 2010-11. I'll be surprised if he has one lower than a +22, which would be right there with the 4th largest improvement from a previous season in his career.

I actually want to compare Tim Duncan's performance this year to the last season as I believe Dirk can make a stride much like him. Duncan went from a +19.45 to a +23.80. That's an improvement of 22.36%. If Dirk can pull that off we'll get a +23.2 out of him, which is still below what he was putting up during the 2010-11 Championship season.

The mavs should make the playoffs. As long as there is some growth in the young talent department and they want to continue to play in dallas, then next season will be a success. Is a 2nd round exit too much to hope for?

I think this years team is better. But just to play devil's advocate I will point out Brand was better even last year than Blair, Dirk/Trix/Carter are another year older and were already old, and Mayo was better than people give him credit for. He carried the team while Dirk was out.

Really, Blair is just taking the bench big man spot where Wright sat the first half and Brand the second. In that combined role, it's more or less a wash.

Regarding OJ, true...and why its so perplexing that he really fell apart down the stretch. If Mayo could've figured out how to work better with Dirk and protect the ball late in games, we probably would've made the playoffs. But the dude just fell off a cliff. Ellis is a much, much better finisher inside and less prone to turnovers than Mayo, but he can't hit the 3 anywhere near as well. Of course, we improved there by picking up Calderon (and over our PGs last year). It will be a fun season. I think we've addressed the biggest weaknesses, but won't know for sure until seeing the team on the floor.

They have a better chance than the Cowboys do.

Nope. And all that is reasonable. Carlisle has got to give them a chance (the young ones)... and it is looking like he really doesn't have a choice anyway. Either Mekel or Larkin will be getting minutes next year because Harris will not be 100% at the start of the year and throughout the year. Crowder will be the backup SF this year. He may be the starting SF by the end of the year if they do decide to move Marion. But you can count on Marion sitting out a few etc like last year.

But in order for them to get in the second round one of two things needs to happen:
1) get in the top 4 so they can play a weaker opponent
2) play the Clippers in the first round

The Clippers even with Doc do not have a team that can hold up in the half court. The Clippers will take the next jump when Blake learns to get buckets offd of things not dunks, and things when the pace slows down and everyone knows you have the ball in the half court. Until then? They are the most beatable "upper echelon" team in the West.
