Giannis in 2021 is still happening though right?

Who do we sign with that second two-way, Josh Reaves?

You could see that coming from a mile away. Pretty disappointing since he had some good physical tools. Didn't do anything with them.

Great physical tools. Zero feel for the game and no jumper.

Can we please petition the league for him to have “Boban” on the back of his jersey instead of his last name

I read something that is shocking to me. Devin Harris has never signed a contract with a different team. He's still a free agent. While he has played with 5 different teams he has only signed contracts with the Mavericks. He has shown some real loyalty to the organization.

Burke to Philly on one year min

With Barea back, Jalen developing, and Delon coming in, not much room for him

Default Barea

35-year-old Barea was a bright spot in a dark season last year before he ruptured his Achilles on Jan 11.

What is the expected timetable for Barea's recovery this year?

Why will his recovery take less than the full year anticipated for the 30-year old Durant?

I am happy for Barea to have a place on the team for leadership, but how much production can realistically be expected from him this year, in what should be his last season?

Hes much smaller and stronger pound for pound than KD, so i think that plays a factor in the difference in their healing time. I'm not sure this would be his last year either unless he is consistently bothered by it going forward.

Macon gone. Now one spot on a two-way. Maybe Roby gets regular roster spot and Reaves gets second two-way?

Uh, Sefko writes that the Mavs have 15 under contract, with Matthias, minus Barea. I thought this was a non-guaranteed training camp fodder contract. He makes it sound like it is a guaranteed contract. Teams are allowed 20 until the first day of the regular season. Is he that dense after covering the team this long? I doubt it's a guaranteed roster spot. https://www.mavs.com/mavericks-sign-...-star-mathias/

Too bad we weren't able to unload Lee. Would have enabled us to bring in one more veteran / big.

Anyone who expects jj to be a competent NBA player again is delusional

Fixed your post.

Dude has 13 productive seasons and a championship ring. Often he's in the top 4 or 5 most talented guys on the team he's on. He's not a speedster who only has speed and actually, most of his success has been faking players up and changing speed rather than raw speed.

I'm a fan of JJB, but I actually think the way he plays, with all the quick stops and starts and changes of direction makes him likely to reinjure.

Achilles injury punctuated the end to Isiah Thomas' career at 35 (though he had already announced his retirement).

People try to say that Dominique Wilkins 'came back' from an achilles tear, but he was not the same player by a long stretch; kind of like the difference in She-Web pre- and post- micro-fracture surgery.

And Cousins' career appears to be cooked; and for that matter, I'm wondering what KD's return will be like.

Has the surgery and rehab protocol improved that much to make people optimistic?

Trying to recall a PG comparable to JJB (age, style of play) who recovered and came back from an Achilles tear in the last 10 years. I think there's one, but I'm coming up blank.

All. Day. Long. - and we don't have the championship without him.
I think JJB will be very helpful to coach and continue to mentor younger players as well as to dust off the old Pick/Roll plays he and 41 used to run but modify for KP.

He isn't anywhere close to 5-11... and saying he's had 13 productive seasons is hilarious

I'll bet I can find you a dozen former LA Lakers who would beg to differ, or do you not remember the sweep of 2011?

One playoff run(where his contributions are vastly overrated by mavs fans) makes for 13 productive seasons??? He was at the absolute best the 6th guy on that team in the playoffs and I'd honestly say closer to 7/8. But this is neither here nor there. The fact is jj is an innefficient insanely ball dominant(like westbrook level ball dominant) tiny pg coming off an injury that makes guys significantly slower than they once were. I'm fine with them giving his contract as a reward for services previously rendered and to allow him to rehab here, but if we are expecting anything positive from him as a player, it's the height of stupidity.

Whats hilarious is your horrific take on JJ. Several sites show him at 5'11'' or 6 foot. I'm puzzled as to why you are so critical of a guy who has done nothing but contribute regardless of the teams expectations. He has won so many games for the Mavs over the years yet you ridiculously and falsely claim he was never any good. Idk what standard you are holding him to but in reality he's been a great back up pg for the majority of his career.

Ha! Okay. Can you provide a stat or anything other than just a hot take?

+/-
2010-2011 - 5th (behind Dirk, Tery, Stojakovic, Chandler)
2014-2015 - 5th (behind Wright, Chandler, Ellis, and Parsons)
2016-2017 - 1st
2017-2018 - 2nd (behind only Harris)

Those are insane +/- numbers for a bench guy, but yeah, absolutely. Despite being top 5 in most years he's been with us, he's nowhere near top 5.

To be clear on some things, 1) I don't hate jj. I have been a mavs fan since I was old enough to actually be a fan and Iv been on this site since I was in high school. I have a soft spot for everyone on the 11 team because it's my favorite sports team ever.
2) while both of those things are true, expecting jj to contribute is still nothing short of delusional. He's at the absolute tallest 5-10(he himself has said he's 5-10 on a good day) and having met him I don't believe he's that tall. Given that size he has to be quick to be useful. Literally no one has ever come back from an Achilles tear and retained their quickness. In case you think this is being harsh on jj, I don't think kd should have gotten a max either given his injury.
3) I hate the way jj plays basketball. He can't or won't play off the ball. He's absolutely fantastic at running the pick and roll but he's extremely inefficient(career .515 ts, .495 last year) and he has a very limited number of plays at which he excels(pretty much pick and roll and back cut to Devin). He still dominated the ball when he played with dsj or Luka and that concerns me. Also obviously having a sub 5-10 player is an extreme negative on defense.
4) given the pg options on this team(Luka, wright, brunson) and the age/position on the win curve it makes no sense to give jj anything more than ceremonial minutes

Edit-also I said he was at best 6th on the 11 mavs which I consider to be pretty clear behind Dirk, Marion jet chandler and Kidd in no pArticular order. If you disagree with one of those feel free to point out which one.

You don't have to go after JJB's past to make an argument for why he shouldn't be part of our (on-court) future... I think Jack.Kerr makes an excellent argument for why Barea's career is likely over. Personally, I'd love to open up that roster spot for someone younger and add him to our coaching staff, where he could best be utilized at this point.
