I'm not on an agenda here, but in the end we simply don't know what happened. I'm not saying Luke touched anyone, but I'm also not saying he didn't. I, personally, lean more towards believing myself. To me, it comes back to this.. Why would I lie?

The saddest part is, I don't think Luke recognizes the thread's culture he's helped create.

Well there isn't much new here, but to Luke's point, these pieces certainly don't paint the Mavs in a positive light.

I will say that one part of this article might actually help Cuban's case...

Quote:
Cuban, though, rarely came by the offices, by all accounts. Multiple people told me that they never saw him there at all, so former employees said they figured he was getting updates from men including Prokos and Ussery, who likely werenít mentioning their own behavior.

I think she's probably telling the truth about Cuban being more involved than he's letting on in the day to day operations of the Mavs.. but I also believe that Cuban was rarely physically there to see the issues. Again, I don't think what she had to say was a smoking gun against the Mavs and Cuban at all but I do believe it makes the team look bad in the court of public opinion and in the eyes of the league.

This up coming season is going to be a very ugly season for this team. After everything comes out Cuban will definitely be suspended and honestly itís not out of the realm of possibility that Cuban could be forced to sell the team. I think this could definitely cause them to lose Carlisle. With all the distractions, inexperience, and lack of talent we will more than likely suck really hard this coming year. We could end up with another top 5 pick.

Don Sterling was banned from the NBA 4 days after the TMZ story dropped, and a month later the Clippers were for sale... If Cuban was going to be forced to sell the team, then it would have happened already. Instead the NBA is letting the Mavericks investigate the Mavericks -- that tells you everything you need to know about Adam Silver's feelings toward Mark Cuban (who, of course, hasn't been charged with any wrongdoing himself).

There were a few chauvinistic asses who are now all gone. The only thing you can really hold Cuban accountable for is not doing something more and that in a sense he allowed poor behavior to go unpunished. Certainly not ok, but nothing even remotely close to needing to sell the team.

The only thing the league can really do is fine him and perhaps have a league official overlook things for a season or two. The fact that Cuban hired that new head of operations kinda negates the point of doing that though.

We still don't know everything, but I haven't read anything really substantive since that SI article.

Cuban let a dude jerk off at work, because he could sell tickets. He also kept a woman beater on, with the rationale that "at least I am saving women who are working elsewhere." Sterling just said racist shit to his gold digger girlfriend. How big the story gets in the media will decide the outcome. Looks like Cuban is dodging the bullet for now.

I agree, but right now it's purely a social media story that has yet to take flight. I've tried telling some of my casual Mavs fan family/friends about it, and they don't have a clue or really care.

The ticket sales guy rubbing his pants watching porn at work is gross and stupid, but it's hardly something that is going to get the average person's blood going.

Compare the Mavs versus what occurred with the Clippers.... It's interesting that one incident got an owner removed and the other incident probably won't lead to much more than a small suspension.

Sterling also had a hideous history of racism in his real estate dealings.

But yeah, Cuban's issue is terrible, too. I just think the difference in response is more tied to the fact that the NBA cares more about their African American fans than female fans. I highly doubt that it's about the league loving Cuban. He's certainly added some value in the form of being a celebrity to watch, but with Lamar Ball filling that role, I could see the league seeing Cuban as just another guy trying to tarnish their reputation with his complaints about reffing.

The NBA doesn't care about women people

Sorry to bring this up again, but just learned that BallinWithBryan was involved in this as well? Apparently the Athletic signed him for DFW coverage, but a woman came forward with substantial accusation that she already had shared with the investigators.

Athletic pulled the contract and Bryan has disappeared since then. Sheesh, very sad to learn that he's apparently a miserable human being. I never knew him personally, but he brought me into Mavsmoneyball back in the day and I sometimes provided him with stats when I still ran my own engine. Was always hoping he'd land another Mavs-related gig... Until today...

Do you have any details about what happened? I figured some of this out on Twitter last year, but nobody had a clear idea of what he did. It was all very vague.

I’m just wondering because I did meet him in real life, and I’m the one who actually convinced him to pursue writing as a career. I never knew him well, but he was super-shy around women. Not that he couldn’t still be a creeper, but he certainly wasn’t an alpha-type like the other Mavs employees who were part of this scandal.

I guess I just want to know what happened because I feel partially responsible for putting him there in the first place. I’ve met several posters from this forum over the years, but he’s the only one who I nudged in a certain direction. If I had known that nudge would be putting women in harm’s way, I certainly would have never done it. He didn’t even turn out to be a very good writer anyway.

What is the point in putting someone on blast without knowing any details though? A miserable human being? With so much outrage going on nowadays it always seems better to wait for real news to come out before the hot takes on something. Imo.

They're keeping all of the womanizing stuff hush-hush though (for the sake of the victims), so you're never going to get actual details. The fact that he vanished from thin air speaks for itself. Whatever he was doing it obviously was pretty bad.

Well, someone called him out on Twitter directly, then he just disappeared... This was his second-to-last post ever (click 'more replies'): https://twitter.com/BallinWithBryan/...77194670747649

There was never any "real news" on it because he was never officially on the Mavs payroll. That's why it's hard to find any details.

Hmm. Interesting.

If I had proof of what he allegedly did, I think I would have put it out.

I don't blame myself -- he's a grown-ass man who made his own bad decisions... But I do feel a little responsible for helping him get into a position where those bad decisions could affect this poor, young woman. From what I gathered, she was a sports journalist too -- and his actions derailed her career.

And, yeah, one of the reasons I distanced myself from him way back before this all happened was because he got super-offended when I suggested that maybe he take some writing classes. He had the interest, insight, and the access, but his work was always so dry to read. It felt more like a report you'd find in a science or financial journal than s sports piece. His refusal to grow as a writer was a real turnoff.

I think the "proof" was submitted to The Athletic when they decided to hire him on (they dodged a creative bullet there). Why it was not made public is beyond me, but it could be as simple as the victim wanting to remain anonymous. Plus, Bryan was never on the Mavs payroll -- he was just some little-known blogger who had a press pass. Hardly news in the grand scheme of things.

Yeah sorry, true that. I think I was a little shocked since I occasionally look up what the dude is up to and then followed a trail of tweets and stuff for about an hour and it got ugly. There is absolutely a possibility that something was blown out of context or whatever.

@Underdog: No proof, no. I bet you've seen the tweets that I found today already. Apparently, he got hired by The Atheltic for Dallas content on March 12th. On the same day this women claimed he had harassed her out of her job and that she had talked to both the investigators at Mavs HQ and The Athletic staff. I assume it was substantial enough (or simply not worth the risk) for The Athletic to not hire him after all, and he disappeared from social media the same day. Last tweet is from March 12th...

Connecting the dots it doesn't look good for him tbh. But his name doesn't pop up in the official report either. And honestly, I would also just vanish from Twitter if something similar was brought up, true or false. Because then you can't reason any longer anyway against the mob. So who knows.

I mean, she had several opportunities to out him publicly in that thread, but didn't do it... Most people who make stuff up are usually angling to gain something, but she just seemed to want to put it all behind her. There wasn't much of a "mob" except for the few people who seemed to connect the dots themselves.

He not only disappeared from Twitter, but his weekly Mavs newsletter completely went silent at the same time (still no refunds for that yearly subscription)... Not a good look.

Oh I agree. That's why I was so distraught because it all makes way too much sense. Didn't even check on MavsObserver. Page down, Twitter handle gone. Phew...

Mavs might have more explaining to do...

The respect Philo has earned in NBA circles also is evident in the impressive board of directors he assembled for TPG Sports, the North Carolina-based basketball-centric consulting and events company he founded: Grizzlies coach J.B. Bickerstaff, Nets coach Kenny Atkinson, Mavericks director of player personnel Tony Ronzone, and longtime NCAA head coach turned ESPN college basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla. At TPG’s “Pro Scout School,” scheduled for next month in Las Vegas during the NBA Summer League, Mavericks president Donnie Nelson (a longtime Philo champion), Indiana Pacers president Kevin Pritchard, and former Timberwolves general manager Jim Stack will give presentations.

...

But not everyone holds such fond memories of Philo’s past. Many locals remember an incident that went unmentioned during his hall-of-fame induction ceremony, one that led to more headlines than his basketball career ever did. “A former teacher was sentenced Wednesday to a year in Saratoga County Jail for raping and impregnating a 15-year-old girl who formerly was one of his students,” an Albany Times Union article from October 12, 2000 began.

Philo was the rapist. His victim was a freshman at the Charlton School for Girls, an orphanage-turned-boarding-school in Burnt Hills where the then-26-year-old Philo worked.

...

Philo pleaded guilty to four counts of third-degree rape, a felony defined in New York as a “perpetrator 21 years or more” having sexual intercourse with a “victim less than 17 years old.” (The crime is commonly referred to as “statutory rape.”) Philo also pleaded guilty to four misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child and four misdemeanor counts of sexual abuse. The four felony counts carried a combined maximum penalty of 16 years in prison; he could have gotten up to another eight years behind bars for the eight misdemeanors.

Yet Philo was sentenced to a year in county jail, a sentence whose leniency flabbergasted Jennifer A. Jensen, Saratoga County’s sex-crimes prosecutor at the time.

...

Yet Philo’s transition from a jail cell to an NBA front office appears to have happened with stunning quickness. According to a June 25, 2001 story in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Philo was among a group of 13 players who won an invitation to an open tryout with the Mavericks by performing well in a Hoop-It-Up tournament in Dallas. In a 2017 interview, Philo said Donnie Nelson hired him after the two men became friends when Philo began playing pickup hoops with Mavs players. Philo told Deadspin that the combination of his experience playing overseas and his personal relationship with Nelson landed him his first NBA scouting job. “[Nelson] was looking for another talent evaluator in Europe that not just knew players but had relationships,” Philo said.

Evidently, the organization either didn’t dig very deep into Philo’s background—he’d enrolled in the Texas sex offender registry the very same week he got the invitation to try out for the Mavericks—or weren’t bothered enough by what they found not to hire him. Philo has said he was a full-time international scout for the team by 2003.

Nelson, through team spokesperson Sarah Melton, declined to answer any questions about Philo’s hiring, saying via email that the team couldn’t even confirm the date Philo was hired. Melton said that information about Philo wasn’t available because “our old HR guy has been let go.” (That would be former HR director Buddy Pittman, who was fired in Febuary 2018 for failing to appropriately address domestic abuse and sexual abuse allegations against employees. Pittman did not respond to an interview request.)
