Some info from the Athletic

Isaiah Roby ó Leaves Nebraska to turn pro: This is not a particularly surprising move, but Roby held out until the final day before making his call. NBA executives liked what they saw from Roby at the combine, where he tested well athletically and showcased some interesting skills out on the break due to his grab-and-go handle and leaping ability. Heís also an interesting potentially versatile defender due to his mobility. The big question here is size, strength and toughness, but he can work on those things in the NBA with targeted nutritional and strength programs. Given that heís likely set to be a top-45 pick, itís not a surprise to see him go.

Never heard of the kid but his game looks pretty nice and solid overall. If he can put in the work there might be a spot for him.

The Ringer

ISAIAH ROBY Forward Nebraska, junior

SHADES OF: Thaddeus Young, Trey Lyles, Rodions Kurucs

PLUSES
Solid ball handler for his size who can drive and finish near the rim with either hand; he could develop into a major pick-and-pop threat if his shot develops.

Unselfish passer who keeps the ball moving and does a good job of locating cutters and spot-up shooters; however, his passes are often inaccurate.

Capable post scorer whoís comfortable on either block using either hand.

Potentially switchable defender who flashes lateral quickness sliding against guards; he stays low in his stance and has good footwork changing directions with the length to alter shots.

He could become versatile in defending the pick-and-roll in all different schemes, like hedging, dropping, or switching.

Bouncy athlete whoís a threat to protect the rim from the weak side, though he isnít an enforcer.

MINUSES
Passive player who doesnít assert himself on offense. He also avoids physicality, too; on the roll, heíll often dribble into a jump hook or floater instead of challenging defenders at the rim.

He looks good shooting, but the results arenít there; he lacks touch near the rim and from the line, both of which are concerning when projecting his 3-point-shooting upside.

Often gets stuck in no-manís-land defending off-ball or in the pick-and-roll when recovering; his motor also regularly wanes.

Dealt with plantar fasciitis that affected his heel last summer, and suffered a groin injury during the season.

Will he be a two-way contract? Thoughts?

You can only have two 2-way contracts at a time, and we already have Kostas and Macon, plus we just signed Josh Reaves to one... So I'm thinking Roby probably ends up with a full contract unless we give up on both guys from last year.

I see a little Paskal in him as well. Certainly a guy every team wants to emulate.

Hot take: Roby will see minutes slotted between Luka and KP as a 4, and will make the All-Rookie second team. His game is actually a lot like Maxi’s, but he is quicker and more athletic.

Wow

I had him slotted as a G-Leaguer with a spot showing with the Mavs a couple of times

Carlisle likes to have a Marion/Aminu type player on the team and this guy seems to have some of the same traits. Rick seemed to attempt to groom DFS into that role and maybe why they liked Jackson.

Not sure about the rebounding but IR definitely seems to have the defensive potential of Marion and Aminu.

Ok, I'll keep this hype train going:

1) Roby is used to elite competition. The Cornhuskers strength of schedule was similar to Duke's.

2) Roby is a versatile defender who can switch 1-5. Advanced stats show he is a good/great defender & rebounder for his size.

3) He is one of the players in this draft who has the most to benefit from NBA spacing and better teammates. Similar to Kyle Kuzma (who shot 32% from three his junior year at Utah) Roby simply hasn't been in a system that plays to his strengths. Nebraska didn't have shooters around him, and the lack of spacing hurt his ability to go off the bounce.

4) He has better handles than Powell & Kleber, and is a better individual defender than both. He is more versatile switching screens than both. He is arguably as good of a rebounder, if not better than both. He has an NBA-ready frame, high intangibles, and doesn't play scared the way Powell sometimes does.

All in all, I legitimately expect him to get minutes.

Especially if we don't keep DFS which would be fine with me.

Better handles than Powell and Maxi doesnt impress me much seeing how he is 2 and 4 inches shorter and plays more sf than both. I would hope his handles are better than Salahs as well. Not sure he will rain 3s like Salah though. 🏀☔

Yeah, if this guy plays any sort of minutes, itíll be because things went wrong and weíre tanking at the end of the year. Gotta love the post draft hype. Lol

This happens every single year with our late second rounders and undrafted signings. People expect them to come out fighting for minutes. I saw one guy on another board pencil Roby in as a starter eventually.

For every Brunson, Yogi, Maxi, or DFS there's a Johnathan Motley, AJ Hammons, Maurice Ndour, Ricky Ledo, Reyshawn Terry, Gal Mekel, Shan Foster, Nick Fazekas, or Mo Ager. If either Roby or Reaves turn out to be good enough to earn any kind of minutes at all I'll consider it a win. I hope they work out but I'm not banking on it.

For every Brunson
And would Brunson had gotten any real burn if JJ wasn't injured and DSJ traded? I think he would have gotten minimal minutes

@All_Things_Mavs: Dallas was going to select Isaiah Roby with the 37th pick, but they saw an opportunity to move down, get their guy and add two future 2nd-round picks, according to @tim_cato
