Default GDT: Round 1, Game 5 - Mavs (2-2) at Clippers (2-2) 8:00pm TNT

Hey! Guess what? We've now forced at least a 6-game series in only Doncic's second season.

Not too shabby.

You know Clippers will be salty and this will be a hard one to win, but GO MAVS

Injury report
KP - knee - questionable/game-time decision
Doncic - ankle - probable
Burke - ankle - probable
DFS - hip soreness - questionable
Lee - calf - out
Powell - Achilles - out
Brunson - shoulder - out

Beverly - calf - questionable (unlikely)

Biggest game for the Mavs since Game 6 of the 2011 Finals.

I think KP is sitting out so Doncic can be viewed as the greatest player of all time.

Clippers have Leonard, PG, and like 10 starting-caliber players.

Mavs? It's just Luka.

Wonít be surprised if itís a blowout. We need Maxis offense and I would play him more at the center position tonight. Double Kawhi when possible. Luka will have trouble replicating last game and needs all the offensive help he can get.

Honestly should be.

Our superstar - injured but playing
Our second star - injured
Our scoring scrapper - injured, but playing
Our defensive 3/d wing - injured (maybe playing)
Our starting center - injured
Our 6th man PG - injured

That's a lot of injuries for a team generally considered less talented than the Clippers already.

Feared this deeply about Porzingis when we got him. Biggest game we’ve had in years and a big 0 from him. Maybe his qualifying game minutes should’ve been more managed if we were going to dick around and get stuck with this series anyway. This sucks ass. This is just how it will be with this guy the whole time isn’t it?

You really have to wonder if this can be a recurring thing in future playoff series. This could easily happen again.

To be fair, a lot of players are getting hurt in the bubble. And it's not worth blowing a knee when next season is going to start fairly quickly. If he needed surgery, then he'd be out likely for most if not all of next season.

It’s not worth paying max salary to a guy who can’t make your biggest games, but that’s what you have to do to have him. That trade off sucks. He’s probably not playing for the rest of the series regardless, likely the playoffs

KP out? Must be serious. Not even a game time decision. More playing time for Boban. Dare I say it, we might miss Powell. Yikes. Deep down, Luka is probably excited as a competitor. He knows they can beat the Clippers even without KP. If they beat the Clips again, he will just be adding to his legacy.

I understand being upset, but you still have to play the long play with this.

I will say that sitting KP in back-to-backs was a waste of time because the entire purpose of that would be for him to be healthy now.

It was impressive but I don't think we should rely on this often. PG is a sleeping giant. I hope he never wakes up.

Um, we signed him last summer and knew there would be bumps in the road with him proving his health. The "long play of the situation" has more or less just begun.

The Mavs did win a championship with their 2nd/3rd best scorer sidelined by injury. And each opponent was quite formidable (least of which were the defending champions).

It sucks KP is out, and we've all been talking all year about how valuable of an experience it will be for KP and Luka to get playoff experience together and that isn't really happening. But, I think this team seeing how they can be effective against a top team even with KP out and with Luka sitting for stretches is just as valuable. Keep this team together, improve in a few areas, and this team is a contender. Not 5 years ago, now. So, I'm psyched regardless of what happens the rest of our playoffs.

If Giannis doesn't reach the finals or win it, I think you try to pull a trade of Giannis for Portzings plus assets. If it doesn't work it doesn't work, but at least try.

I think a lot of people fear that this is the long play... That he's going to be a guy that's injured all the time and often unavailable in the most important games.

I even wonder if fully healthy if he's even an MLE guy. Doesn't seem to be anything special that couldn't be had for cheaper other than size.

Why would the Bucks trade arguably the best player in the NBA for what some might consider damaged goods?

Same reason the Mavs traded Dirk to the Lakers for scraps in the 2000s. We just couldn't get over that hump to get a championship and might as well get a beloved player a ring.

hehe

Dirk in 2003 Spurs series vibes. Sucks ass man. Big shot to really break through early
and increase our window, get insanely valuable chops. But most likely.....nope.

Yeah, no way do Bucks make that trade but Mavs should consider other potential trades....maybe Beal?

You’re never in the position of power in a trade with the injured guy. He’s here to stay. If he’s traded we are getting 60 cents on the dollar on him- not anywhere near an equal or superior player like Beal. I hope he gets healthy but I just doubt it long term.

Mavs need to do a better job protecting him.
He seems to be a workhorse in our system, and with the injury history/concerns, it would make sense for us to put him more in a Dirk role with bookends similar as TC and Matrix in the frontcourt. I know they aren't the same players but if he is playing heavy minutes being our only true big on the floor, we can expect him to be frequently absent from big games. And the absences are only going to become more frequent as he continues to age.

Iíve been on this kick for awhile but they need to be incredibly smart with moves to a) appease Luka and b) provide insurance and backup for KP. Those are the biggest things we could do and most important. Year 3 for Luka is in a couple months- that discount rookie deal ends soon. Strike before weíre completely capped out on his deal.

I trust Casey Smith and the Mavs' medical staff completely. I don't know if they're the best in the league, but I think it's safe to say they're AMONG the best. If they don't let the dude play, it's because he shouldn't play. This is also why I wasn't in a twist about Doncic coming back into game 3 to give it a try or playing in game 4. I just trust them. Injuries are always a risk, but these guys want to play, so as long as the medical staff signs off, they need to play.

As far as the long term future for KP, I get the worry about that, but I think it's important to note that the NY media didn't think he'd ever reach the level of health required to play as much as he did this season (or that he'd re-sign here). They were wrong. It requires an even bigger leap of faith, but maybe we should give the Mavs' brain trust, which obviously includes the medical guys, a little bit more credit here, too. I don't believe they'd have given him a max contract after working with him for half of a season if they thought he'd be missing playoff games forever.

I have faith that they truly believe they have him on a plan that will restore him to top form, including day to day health. There will ALWAYS be an elevated injury risk for a guy who's 7'2" and moves like a 6'9" guy. Look at Yao Ming. Do you think the Rockets regret that draft pick, just because his career was short for a star? I don't.

I will also say that while I'm over the moon about how well the team is playing right now, the logical, emotionless part of my brain still concludes that they have a 0% chance to win a title this season. I'm not totally depressed about KP's absence in these playoff games.

The mavs need a low post /half court scorer to get them easy baskets or ft opportunities instead of launching all these ugly 3 point shots they take.

I would feed boban the ball inside post and abuse the clippers low post defense all night. Once they collapse boban has go passing skills to kick outto open man on perimeter for wide open 3./ or hard core attack the rim drive and foul shots

This reminds me when some people thought that we could trade for a Lebron in his mid 20s for Roddy B.

Luka is leading all players in drives per game in the playoffs by a large margin, and the Mavericks as a team are first in the league in drives per game. They are also only 7th in 3 pointers attempted per game. The Clippers have attempted only 2 less per game.

Good to see old-timers coming back slowly. It's starting to feel like the early Dirk years as far as excitement among the fan base

This.

Win or lose, this has already been a resounding success. I think a lot of people expected a sweep. I would have been happy with winning one game. Winning two, and especially in such dramatic fashion is bonus.
