Default GDT game 46 - Mavs (16-29) at Thundah () B2B TNT

Nationally televised. They sure picked a doozy.

Injuries and such
Dirk - old - no B2Bs
Matthews - hip strain - until next game?
Williams - human voodoo doll - a few days
Barea - hamstring - at least a week

Worst 3pt defense(that would be us) meets the 2nd worst 3pt offense(okc).

This game and playing against the spurs, rockets, and miami are the ones you always want the Mavs to win in.

Tough break for jackson if that hammy is serious. Are there anymore guards under 6'0 we can sign?

The Mavs aren't a very good team, but they can be sneaky-dangerous in the right matchups.

It's weird knowing that Barnes is now the Mavs best player. Dirk was the best player on the Mavs for what...15-16 seasons?

They're locked into a 6-8 spot for he next 4-6 years for sure. Maybe a second round appearance. No risk of a championship, but some people like mediocre teams with perennial playoff appearances

IMO it's a bit unfair to prematurely judge the Thunder considering it's their first season post-KD (who once again, left them for the team that barely squeaked past them in the playoffs, it bears repeating). I too think they're going nowhere fast, they're certainly not going to attract any huge FAs, but they may have a trade or two up their sleeve, or might hit in the draft. I think they have three players who could be starters on a deep playoff team -- Russ, Oladipo, and Adams. All that being said, screw Oklahoma. I only remember it exists when Red River comes around.

Unfair? Westbrook has been the same player since he came into the league in 2008. It's like watching Garfunkel after Simon left. Russ has obviously been given more shots and touches. But his efficiency is basically where it was in previous years. He basically just gets to do more for his team but not necessarily in a way that leads to a better team. He's still phenomenal, but the stat bump from last year to this is hollow and filled with padded stats. For instance, he sucks up a phenomena amount of rebounds but the team rebounding percentage is roughly the same with him on and off, which may mean he's simply stealing boards from his teammates instead of really helping to improve the team. His scoring efficiency isn't really better either. He's just getting more shots up. 5.6 more shot attempts in addition to the possessions that end with FTs and TOs

Not only did Westbrooknot take a leap forward,he's also a player with two significant issues.

1) he's the most passionate guy in the league now and plays at 110% at all times, but he's not particularly logical or cerebral. Dude plays with his heart and gut rather than his head. That crazed drive let's him do ridiculous things, but just as frequently means he hurts the team with TOs, dumb fouls, and techs. Some days are two steps forward and one back. Others it's one step forward and two steps back.

2) his game more than many other stars comes at a huge cost. Unlike Dirk, Curry, Durant, etc, Westbrook's game completely hinges on dominating the ball. That's great when he's the first option. Dude has the ball for something like 75% of the playtime, but it makes it hard to find a complementary player.

Westbrook can only give it his all, which is good enough to get them to the playoffs every year which is a crazy accomplishment, but that will make it hard to find an efficient complementary player like Durant again. They won't have a good pick so the only way they'll improve is through trades and free agency. Westbrook also had the reputation for being so fiery that he can also be prickly, volatile, and hard to play with. That's why he's great, because that drive makes him a star and could make him the very best in the league at putting a team on his back. It's really between him and LeBron when it comes to guys who can literally propel a team to the playoffs by themselves, but Lebron's game is so much more versatile which makes him complement a larger range of talent.

I agree with everything EL said about RWB. But I also agree with Tap and think it's premature to judge the Thunder, as a team, in the post KD era. They have assets to trade and I just think they need pieces to fit better to be contending against anyone not named GSW's. Kanter may have been given a max deal but that deal was a max from 2 years ago. So his max is 17m a year, which isn't really an overpay in today's NBA. In fact I'd argue Adams is the bigger problem going forward because in Today's NBA I don't know if a rim protector is 22m a year valuable, the league is all about the perimeter. You need rim protection but not at 22m. I'd take RWB over Harden in a heartbeat, and view their impact on a team similarly. Harden is the same POS player he was last year, we know who he is too and he's not changing, but the difference is they have shooters all around him at all times. RWB has Oladipo I guess and not much else as a reliable shooter on the floor. I think if he had the right pieces around him he's good enough to contend with anyone not named GSW's.

Yep, number 2 there is called Iverson syndrome. Although I'd say Iverson had the ball in his hands probably 90% of the time. Still, finding good NBA players that won't touch the ball much is a tough pill to swallow.

And yes, what holds RW back from being the best player in the league is his poor decision making that looks like it will never change.

Yep, incredible bad decision making. And you get so easily into his head, its amazing.

And and Presti is so damn overrated. He is great in the draft but just sucks in building and complementing a team. Got incredible lucky losing the Oden/Durant lottery against Portland, drafted great with Westbrook and Harden, steals with Ibaka and Adams...but the rest...

Idiot Harden trade
Idiot trade for Kanter (and max him out)
Should have asked for Vuce in the Ibaka trade (but they had Kanter allready)
etc etc

So regardless Durant leaving for nothing, Presti did horseshit with the rest of the team over years

You could also add that RWB's style won't necessarily help the longevity of his career. He will slow down eventually and his game will have to adapt, but not sure he will age as well as other superstars will or have.

I know you were more referring to the current RWB and Thunder situation, but it's a big thing to think about for complementary players and FA's looking to potentially join the Thunder for next year and beyond.

And I still don't get why they basically gave up on Ilyasova who is playing great for the Sixers.

better be a Shaqtin' the fool. Dumbest thing I've seen this year. Their 6th man punched an inanimate object and shattered a bone in his arm. It's still hard to believe.

Was texted this link from a buddy who got it from fish's site. We really are predictable. A "lightning quick" 6'0 guard according to draftnet.

Well we certainly have a type. If he starts, we'll have started six different players at PG this year.

He won't do anything and even if he does, I doubt he gets a season BoY contract, but I dig the name a lot.

A few interesting videos on this guy Yogi Ferrell.

Pretty impressive video from just a few games.

Long-ish tribute video. Seems like a good kid.

Knicks and Clips are apparently looking for a 3rd team in a trade... I'd sure like for Donnie to talk to Phill Jackson about what they think about Porzingis. Mavs have some good expiring's if Knicks want to tank.

Unless they have 100% given up on him, why on Earth would they trade a 21-year old in his second year who they just spent a 4th overall pick on... to tank? Knicks really are stupid, but Knicks know as well as Mavs-- you tank by trading away old tires with tread on them. You don't trade away young prospects in order to tank.

Also, why would they give away their best prospect to get a fire sale trade to work? They're on the losing end of the proposed Clips-Knicks trade. Why would they overpay to get fleeced?
