Default How important is playing seeding for the Mavs?

I noticed the coach said he doesn't pay attention to the standings.

And that might be why the team could ultimately end up as a 7th seed now.

Now i understand we are most likely not winning a title this year.

But I'm just baffled as to why you have a team that is capable of at least getting to the 2nd round if you could avoid either LA team in the opening round.

Seems like OKC who also wasn't expected to make the playoffs have valued the regular season more. They are the best closing team in the nba.

I think both Dallas and Okc could give Denver a true test but it appears the mavs aren't going to go all out just for seeding purposes and they won't try to get a better matchup.

Just seems like the goal was just to make the playoffs and once that happens losing in the 1st round is no big deal since we exceeded expectations.

We've been a 1st round out every single post season since our title year and that just isn't a good feeling as a fan.

Itís got nothing to do with being a 33 win team last season, integrating a new second banana coming off injury, your two superstars losing significant time to injury, and losing your starting center for the season. Itís because the coach isnít looking at the standings (not even buying this btw. Heís paying attention.)

Rick is fully aware of the standings. I don't buy it either.

The seeding doesn't really matter too much if you look at our road vs home record. If all our games were at home we probably miss the playoffs. It doesn't really matter what seed we get. We are too inexperienced and still another really good player at least.

Tell me what seed the Clippers are going to be

They could be #2 or #3 very easily. They could slide to #4 or #5

There's no way to avoid them if we don't know what seed they are going to be

Must have missed something because if the POs started today weíd be playing the Nuggets.

Not sure of the concern here. If we are a 6 seed and we are matched up with the Clips with a few reg season games left, we should purposely lose just to get the Nugs???

And what happens if the Clips decide to load management their guys and THEY lose their last few games?

Trying to avoid any particular team is a trap

Yeah you do have a point the mavs suck at home so a lower seed and a chance to open up on the road could potentially be best.

But I just realized the mavs are God awful at 4-14 vs west playoff foes this year so having said they probably don't have any favorable matchups one way or the other

We have the talent but not the grit and experience. Mentally they aren't there yet. Defense isn't even close imo.

I'd love to see this young team go on the road and surprise a contender like we did back in 2001 vs Utah.

2001 is spot on.
We need the same kind of dynamic.
2001 was the jump start for Dirk‘s Mavs. Now we need the same for Luca‘s Mavs.
Best possible match up for the Mavs would be Houston.
So we need that 5. seed.

Honestly none of the top 7 teams are a good matchup. The best we can hope for is the Nuggets, but you just get to the playoffs and hope for some young players to grow (Luka in particular).

We're really used to prime Dirk wrecking it out there, but young teams struggle. They take growth. Sometimes the best thing you can do is get to the playoffs even if you get swept just to get the experience.

In role, but certainly not in experience. Fin brought a certain level of veteran savvy to Dirk/Nash that THJ cannot provide to Luka/KP at this time.

He may have had more vet savvy than THJ but it wasn't in the form of playoff experience. I don't think Fin had any, but THJ has been once.

@dalton_trigg: Mavs are currently the 7-seed in the West standings, but they’re closer to the 2-seed than they are the 8-seed:

- 4.5 games back of 2-seed Denver

- 6.5 games up on 8-seed Memphis

Not to say the Mavs will climb that high, but it’s interesting/exciting nonetheless.

When Rick says he is not thinking about playoff seedings, what he means is that is not at the top of his priority list. He's much more concerned about helping his young players grow and learn. We could have won several of those close losses just by putting JJB or Boban in and taking Brunson or Wright out. But to me, and I think, to Rick, it is a much better idea to invest those crunch time minutes in your young guys, so they can learn how to handle them.

This team is not winning a championship this year, and by the time they are ready to compete for one, guys like Barea, Boban and Courtney Lee will be long gone. But in a year or two, Brunson and Wright could easily be as good or better than JJB, and at a bargain price.

Remember, Carlisle got hired because analytics showed him to be the best coach at making his players better. Finney-Smith and Maxi are prime examples of this, and so is THJ. I'm hoping to see similar growth from Jackson and WCS.

In this same vein, bigs who can't switch on D or step out and hit the 3 are fast becoming a thing of the past. Maybe not today with the Lakers, but by the time these Mavs are ready to compete for a ring, there won't be any Dwight Howard types left. Houston just dumped one of the best bigs in the NBA. Rick is coaching for the future. He's 3 chess moves ahead of his critics on this board.

Excellent post, itís almost as if youíve been watching this team for more than a year... Rick has always treated the regular season as an extended preseason. This is nothing new.

Difference between playing OKC or Memphis vs the Lakers or Clippers. In other words, very important. Dallas decided early on that they were smarter than everyone else and that the teenagers we have on the team need more rest than LeBron which is working on his 2nd million minutes.
Someone needs to tell the tour de France guys to take it easy on their training. Maybe 32 minutes a day every other day instead of the 8 hours a day training they currently do.

3 chess moves ahead of his critics on this board. Well I would hope like hell he is, but there are nights where Rick is playing checkers. I guess time and playoffs will tell.

Porzingis was only out one game until he had to miss ten in a row, due to an injury. Luka hasn’t been rested at all this season. He’s only missed games when his ankle was injured.

I thought he was saying that Rick was 3 chess moves ahead of the rest of the league

That I didn't agree with

But if he's just talking about fans in general than ok

You do realize that injuries were involved, no?

He is talking about the handful of people that aren't afraid to throw some criticism toward Rick. Granted, some posters go a bit overboard from built up frustration but the general idea is that if you criticize Rick you are headed for the doghouse here. Rick is not flawless, but you would think some folks believe that it's their job to balance any criticism because he is the compass and without total faith in his every move there is fanarchy in Mavs land.

Damn Thunder won again

They have been one of the most consistent teams in the league over the last 2 months. Going to be tough to keep up with them come next month because our schedule gets a little tougher.

Anyone listen to 1st take debate about possible playing matchup for mavs

Denver is apparently the team that Dallas would have a good chance of upsetting in the 1st round.

They think the mavs match up well with the nuggets
