Default Texas Rangers 2020 (and beyond?)

For anyone with a subscription to the Athletic, Adrian Beltre comes in at 52 in one writer's countdown of the top 100 players in MLB history.

https://theathletic.com/1568085/2020...adrian-beltre/

Another nugget that's fun to read about - a recap of how and why Trout is the GOAT of the 2010's but their team has sucked.

https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/...n-playoff-game

Spring training starts in less than 3 weeks!

I definitely agree.. Love Beltre but I'd have a hard time putting him that high. The reality was that he was only a good player throughout most of his career. Yes, he had a great 7 year stretch towards the end of his career.. I love Beltre. His WAR is extremely high.. this is obviously what gets him high on the list. However, he was rarely one of the best 2-3 players in the game at any point in his career. His greatness in large part is his long career. He played at a high level for 20 years. I guess it depends on what you value. A greater peak or more consistency over a long period of time..

2021 will mark the 5th year in a row the Rangers will miss the playoffs with no end in sight. You can make a solid argument that JD has been the worst GM in baseball since about 2015. The big league team is devoid of talent with no real assets to trade, and the farm system is bottom 5 in baseball with no real game changers on the way up. The rebuild should have started circa 2017 but JD and ownership tried to piecemeal a skinny rebuild which has failed miserably. At least ownership has a new tax subsidized stadium to enjoy.

Good thing I don’t have FSSW to watch how terrible they are. JD needs to go. Like already stated this team has no talent or young players in the farm system.

Is this the peak of the ranger's season, getting to .500 at 3-3?
at least they've cleaned out some of the old guard and made room to get some new blood.

For years, I would ask if anyone on this team were as good as their counterpart on the WCS teams (I think the answer, across the board, was 'no'). That indicated just how much rebuilding they needed then. NOW, the question is 'who on this roster is a viable major league starter'? A few promising players, but at best the answer is mostly 'don't know'. With little in the farm system or for trades.

How you can remain GM when when those are the questions, and that is the trend, I don't know. I think literally anyone off the street could have done THAT, for free.

Maybe that's the third question: What has JD done in the last...8 years?...that literally anyone off the street couldn't have duplicated, or bettered?

It's hard to even watch baseball these days with the length per 9 innings being higher than ever before. I believe currently it's sitting at 3 hours and 10 mins per 9 innings. Add that in with knowing your team is trash and has no reasonable hope in the near future and it's downright depressing. Rangers need to fire the GM like yesterday and MLB as a whole needs to revisit changes to bring the time per 9 innings back down to something more reasonable. I don't care if it's having a foul ball limit per at bat reduce the number of times pitchers and hitters can call time. Just bring it back down around 2:30-2:45 max on average.

As an indication of just where the Ranger's Farm system currently is: Of the top 100 prospects in MLB, the Rangers have 3 of them, and they are ranked #'s 54, 70, and 84. When the Astros were this bad, they created one of the, if not the, best farm systems, and that's where most of their great players of the last few years came from. Rangers? Not looking good there.

Their system is very deep in the farm and many of the top prospects are starting to hit AA and AAA.

Literally nobody thinks the Rangers farm system is deep. They are consistently rated bottom 5 to 10 in MLB. What are we talking about?

Biggest problem with the farm is there is no cornerstone prospect. There isn't a guy you point to and say that's the guy, we need to field a team by the time he's ready to be called up. We also have no top ace prospect, just some guys who probably at their ceiling won't be better than a 3rd pitcher.

Well said sir. Also to boot, we have ownership that shows no interest in spending in free agency to help bridge the gap on the farm system with an immediate infusion of talent.

I heard several analysts say that. Possible. Lots of prospects, with no standouts.

With the trades, they moved from 19th to 15th ranked. So, they weren't as bad as many thought, but does make me really wonder about any teams ranked behind them--how bad is their system??

Yep.. the system has been thought of as deep without a ton of top end future major league talent close to being major league ready. However, that is starting to change as a few players are breaking through. All of the talent had largely been at the A level. You’re now seeing guys breakthrough in a major way at AA.

Well, you could argue that they have a guy with ace potential now. They have a couple more with #2/3 stuff that have had great success at AA or AAA in Howard and Winn. The talent is starting to be there in the system. I know Howard is no longer a prospect but he is a rookie…so same basically the same thing.
