Default ESPN GDT Mavs vs Blazers (Dame Dollar comes to town)

Dallas Mavericks vs. Portland Trail Blazers: How to watch
Start time: 6:30 p.m. CT or 7:30 p.m. ET

How to watch: ESPN (National), Fox Sports Southwest (Dallas market), NBC Sports Northwest (Trail Blazers’ market)

Watch online: Watch ESPN (National), Fox Sports Go (Dallas market)Dallas Mavericks vs. Portland Trail Blazers: How to watch
Start time: 6:30 p.m. CT or 7:30 p.m. ET

We might be in for another shootout as the Mavericks (13-14) will host the Trail Blazers (15-10) on Sunday evening. Both teams won five out of their last six games and are feeling good about themselves going into this game.

Expect many points
Forget about defense, these two teams win with offense only. Per Cleaning the Glass data Dallas is currently ranked 26th on defense, one place in front of Portland at 27th place. On offense, Portland is ranked 5th, while Dallas moved up to 9th place after a stellar performance against the Pelicans. We’re waiting for Dallas to turn around things on defense, but don’t bet on it to happen against Portland.

Over the stretch of the last five games, the Mavericks are averaging 127.6 points per game, which would be great if they wouldn’t give up 129.6 points on defense. Both teams play a similar brand of basketball on offense, they take care of the ball and shoot a lot of threes.

Fun Facts section

Doncic had a career-high 46 points and 12 assists, Porzingis had 36 points and eight 3-pointers (both season highs) and Williamson had a career-high 36 points on 14-of-15 shooting as the Mavericks won 143-130, their fourth straight victory. Add in the Pelicans’ Brandon Ingram, who scored 30, and it was the first time in NBA history that four players age 25 or younger each had 30 or more points in a regulation game, according to Elias Sports Bureau research. 1 day ago – via Steve Richards @ ESPN

Brunson stepped up and won defensive player of the game last outing

Have Luka Doncic, Kristaps Porzingis and the Dallas Mavericks turned a corner?
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...ng/4471312001/

As he patrolled the sideline, Dallas Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle saw two developments in the team’s 143-130 win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Friday that left him feeling both inspired and annoyed.

“The ESPN crowd got a real treat tonight in terms of entertainment,” Carlisle said. “But it was a pillow fight on defense.”

All of which begs two questions. With the Mavericks (13-14) cementing a four-game winning streak and winning five of their last six games, have they truly turned a corner? Or, are they vulnerable currently standing in 11th place in the Western Conference?

The answer appears to depend on which side of the floor the Mavs are playing.

With a fuller roster, the Mavericks hold out hope they will have improved depth and chemistry to improve their defensive miscues.

That did not emerge against the Pelicans, though. So Carlisle conceded, “the decision for the defensive player of the game tonight was not easy.” So Carlisle settled on Brunson for collecting six rebounds and taking a charge.

We can complain about the defense all we want, but I think the problem is our guys just aren't very good. To me it looks like a personnel problem rather than effort or scheming. Richardson and DFS have been better defenders in the past than they've shown so far this season, but nobody is going to confuse either of them for Sydney Moncrief. The real problem though from where I stand is Porzingis. Offensively, he looks like he's found himself again, but I worry that his days as a decent defensive bigman are over. I just don't think you can have surgery on both knees without permanently losing some quickness.

I mean, it's always a balancing act and it's hard to get talent in the NBA. It's even harder to find two-way guys so as a coach/team you're always trying to find that perfect mix of one-way guys and two-way guys to make it work. I'm totally with you that we may need some roster upgrades over the next few years, but it's a tough balance because we honestly need both offense and defense.

That said, I really don't get the hate for Brunson or THJ as defenders, because if you watch any other team in the NBA play, you can see that the NBA has made it nigh impossible for a guard to guard another guard one-on-one. The only way you can slow down a guard is with team defense and even that fails if guards are hitting threes (just look at Curry).

That means our defensive improvement is on the shoulders of KP, Kleber, WCS, and Powell-- our help/secondary defenders-- and all four of those guys have a long way to go to be even decent. I see that as a much bigger issue than guards getting beat.

Then there are threes-- and in 2021 there really isn't any way to guard them. It used to be that a three with a guy within 3-4' was a bad shot. Now every team in the NBA is experimenting with long threes and closely guarded threes. I don't know if any defense in the league has caught up with how you guard teams that are taking so many reckless threes (and making so many too)

Power is out for a huge swath of Dallas. Ice on the roads. Grocery stores sold out. It's like people haven't seen ice before.

It's dangerous. Did you not see the 133 car pileup? It's more important for the players and fans to stay home where it is safe than to risk going out in these conditions. Many vehicles on the road simply are not prepared. Businesses are shut down, including the one I am employed. I am thinking it'll be closed at least for a few days.

Right now it's 13°F, and there's lots of ice out there. It's kinda crazy to even go forward with them playing. Dallas just isn't prepared for these conditions like cities that are used to this kind of weather.

Well, after all, we're constantly and confidently told that we are currently in an existential climate crisis, which is of such gravity that we should be willing to give up much of our way of life. So, it's not much to ask to miss a basketball game!

The show must go on. If every team shut down because their city has snow, we wouldn't have much of a season.

@SMC0007 It's not because of "snow." Seriously, it's irresponsible for them to play tonight. No one should be driving right now.

Gotta love how we see these vaccinated workers, and they're all young. How are they getting vaccinated? I have had COVID-19 multiple times, am an essential worker, and have not gotten vaccinated. Makes me mad seeing them at these games.

Dang, I guess there goes the notion of acquired covid immunity from having had a case of it. By multiple times, how many do you mean?

Lol False. I've been out multiple times today. Plenty of other cars out there too doing just fine. Tell this to Utah, nY, NJ, Minnesota and a bunch of other teams. Heck let's shut 1/3 of the country down in the winter.

Are you familiar with how cities up north actually prepare for these conditions unlike Dallas? The public transit system is shut down. Business are shut down. They are shut down for a reason.

Yea. I've been to every state in the US in pretty much every condition. Seems a bit dramatic.

FTW is not the only place that has ever had a pile up. When you have black ice, blind corner or slope, a pileup can happen.

Well like you said they just don't have any good defenders

I thought Richardson was good in Philly but that hasn't translated over in Dallas.

Well they probably haven’t. A city like Dallas isn’t built with winter weather in mind. Can’t imagine how bad the roads are.

So let me this straight

WCS blocks a shot at the rim

next possession RC sits him brings in Kleber and Blazers get a dunk

Just no logic to some these defensive decisions at times

The Mavs should not even go into the locker room at half time. They should all just stay on the court and practice 3 point shots. Making threes is the only way they are going to win this game, since they are so anemic around the goal.

Porzingis had his best game of the season a two days ago, so of course now he only takes one shot in the entire first half and fucking bricks it. *sigh*

Portland is small not much rim protection

Not sure why they don't attack more 1st and also get Luka in the post vs the Blazers small guards.
