He had two good seasons and just suddenly fell off the cliff. Perhaps he knew he was going to be traded and just gave up. Either way, glad it's done. Time for a new chapter in Mavs basketball.

I respect Barnes staying in the bench and supporting the team even after he clearly knew he had been traded. He was always a pro and developed his game a lot here but was not a great fit for the team.

@tim_cato: Harrison Barnes removed his Mavs jersey before walking off the court for his final game in Dallas. https://twitter.com/tim_cato/status/1093356115134435328

Not liking this. Mavs again show no loyalty to their guys. Just like 2012.

Shouldn't feel bad. We sent him to a really good situation, and the Kings really wanted him. It's a win-win.

You can be loyal or you can rebuild to make a good team.

Can't have both.

Yup.

Barnes was a good guy who went to a good place. We treated him well and in the meantime got a young guy we like and guaranteed cap room to develop around Doncic and KP

I liked him... I didn’t like his game that much (the fit .. not saying he’s a bad player), but I do hope this works out for him. He’s a good guy.

That was the ultimate decider. He had even less chemistry with Luka than DSJ did IMHO.

I think the Golden State Barnes would have fit with Luka, the evolved form of Barnes did not unfortunately

He was a better fit as our #1 scorer, but like DSJ, he no longer fit our team once Luka came along.

Sure seems like no one can play with Luka for some strange reason.

Plenty of guys can play with him, just not a ball-dominant PG like Dennis or an ISO player like Barnes... We need to surround him with 3&D guys and a couple slashers (one aspect of DSJ's game that DID fit well with Luka).

HB didn’t live up to his contract but he was a pro. 2.5 years ago this team had nothing with Dirk injured a lot and he was the only bright spot.

Mathews could play with Luka, he just wasn't very good.

Barnes and DSJ were ball stoppers and that's not the offense that coach likes. He will tolerate it when there is not another option but he prefers the free flowing offense that Luka embodies

Barnes was a total pro on and off the court, much respect to him. Glad to see him going to a probably better situation this season and maybe even beyond. Much of his tenure was dominated by him not playing up to his contract, but I have no doubt he at all times tried to give the Mavs all he could. Transformed his game multiple times, but in the end just wasn't a great fit any longer.

Wish him nothing but the best.

Wes and DJ were good fits, and I think the team without DSJ and Barnes would be looking great. Trading 4/5 of your starting unit looks bad, but some is collateral damage. I'd take Wes back on a vet min and DJ on a reasonable contract. Won't happen, but just saying.

Yeah let's pound that 2011 narrative for no good reason. We also show no loyalty to Zach Randolph btw. Please feel free to rant about that as well. I'm sure trading HB was not easy for the Mavs, but they felt they have to transfer to the next stage of the franchise. It sucks, but it happens.

Now was the time to blow it up... Luka changed everything, and now we have a fresh slate to build around him rather than struggling how to figure it out with "Erick Dampiers" (Barnes) and "Josh Howards" (Dennis) on the roster.

Btw. I don't want to hear shit about the "great fans" at the ACC ever again. Douchebags yelling at Barnes after they found out he got traded is just bullshit. Gotta slap those assholes in the fucking face. I bet those won't get banned from the place like Don Knobler although they deserve it so much more. Turning on your own players more tolerated than shitting on the opposing team. Nuff said. Fuck off.

Have you actually been to the AAC? There will always be stupid people everywhere in life, but the fans there are actually pretty good.

I was prepared for somebody to play this card. My reasoning works without it of course. Not only where there stupid people but others around there are stupid by association for not teaching them a lesson immediately. Fans turning on a role model like HB reflects bad on the whole fanbase and what type of idiots the Mavs as franchise attract to their games period imho. Just a very sad incident.

Eh, you can't really "teach a lesson" to assholes like that -- they're likely drunk and looking for a fight. Nobody wants to get into that... The fans at AAC are still pretty great overall. Don't let a couple bad apples spoil the whole bunch (& other clichés).

Have you ever been to a sporting event anywhere else? ALL sporting events attract douchebags, and ALL fanbases are full of them. The Mavs fan base is no more or less douchey than any other.

Maybe I'm just mad, dunno. Just sucks this happens to HB of all people. Not right and somebody should have stood up for him. Great to see him getting the love from Dallas media and teammates though. Tough night. I didn't expect this being so emotional after I pretty much bitched about him all season. Trade deadline is total madness

I hope I’m overthinking this. I know HB hasn’t played well this season and hasn’t improved much since signing the big contract but I’m just afraid of what this trade has done to this team after seeing the reactions from Dirk and Luka. HB is well liked around the team and around the league. The way this was handled has given the Mavs organisation a bad rep.

No offense, but I'm amazed how many people fall for this narrative. Here's what happened:

1) Mavs informed Barnes well before the game that he's on the block. He decided he would still play.
2) During half-time, they told him he got indeed traded, still went out there and supported the team. Could have gone like Mejri at that point, but that's simply not who he is as a person.
3) The shit during the second half was media and LeBron-driven. Mavs certainly didn't leak it. Why would they?

Mavs for all we know were very upfront with him and he knew about the possibility that the trade could happen during the game. At least there's no reason to think otherwise.

I agree. It's not a fun situation for either party, but I don't think the Mavs are the bad guys some people are trying to make them out to be. This is just about the toughest part of the business, and I could tell from Carlisle during his presser that it's just a fact of life in the NBA, and he certainly didn't enjoy it. HB being the quality individual that he is makes it doubly tough. I do wish HB the best in Sacramento, but I am glad that he is moving on and hope he finds a better fit, which I think he will.

Zach Randolph? Dude hasn't played one minute with the organization. Barnes signed with a trash team when everyone took a poop on Cuban's face. Sure he was paid but he worked hard and was very professional at all times on and off the court. Let the man finish out his contract. On top of that we've already seen what dry powder does. We aren't getting Durant. I don't see a player that we get that is appreciably better than Barnes for the money we freed up. Yes there are better players available. Doesn't mean they are coming to Dallas.
I think Dallas fans and team front office have become unrealistic. Basketball is not NBA 2k. Every player has their flaws. Barnes was not the problem here.

Barnes 108.7 defensive rating is the second-worst on the team behind Dirk Nowitzki, and Dallas is allowing 5.5 fewer points per 100 possessions when he's on the bench.
He also ranks 411th in ESPN.com's defensive real plus-minus (minus-1.30).

THIS...pretty much sums it up well!

Barnes signed the big contract thinking he'd be the next #1 option going forward.
DSJ was touted by everyone that he was the franchise PG for the next decade.
Luka comes along and changes everything by simply being better in both regards.

It would have been tough to change the mindsets and attitudes of DSJ and Barnes. Not their fault by any means, they are both great guys that were just victims of circumstance.

Both moves had to happen and now the drama turns to free agency.

The way things have turned out it definitely reflects bad on the organization. Whoever leaked this before the end of the game whether intentional or not has embassied HB in front of a televised game.

I know I’m in the minority’s in saying this but I’m actually not that convinced it is even a good trade despite flaws in his game because there are other facets involved including team chemistry or the human side of things. I thought the trade that got rid of DSJ DJ and Wes was necessary but this one was really a salary dump. What’s done is done so I just wish the best for HB and hope he plays well for the Kings and hope Justin Jackson turn out to be decent.

Yeah I mean all advanced stats rank Barnes #250 - #400. So if you feel we can't land a top 250 player, might have kept him.

And look, I dislike the business side of basketball more than anyone probably, but it's something the CBA has to address. We need more security for teams and players alike. Currently this whole fight for leverage and power is spiraling out of control. Dirk and the Mavs is a model that you might not see ever again...
