He was a decent vet which netted him some PT, but he's literally the least you can expect from a veteran. Everyone else smart enough to play in Rick's system will produce more.

To be fair with MKG I thought he was solid in the playoffs defensively once they used him on the wing.

I didn't like their initial idea of using him as a Small ball center when he 1st arrived.

He does have the size and strength to match on the wings but looked out of place trying to play center in those smaller lineups.

He probably would thrive in more zone schemes defensively like Miami run.

Dwain Price: KP had left knee ACL surgery on 2/13/18 and didn’t play again until 10/23/19. He also had right knee meniscus tear surgery on 10/9/20. How does the 2 compare? Do we want Kyle Lowry? Could cost us THJ, Maxi Kleber, and Jalen Brunson.

I dunno. All three of those guys are important parts of our rotation. Yeah we get the best player in the deal, still. That seems like a high price for a one year rental on Lowry. He's UFA at this so we do clear more cap space which is good. But honestly at this point how much are we really craving more cap space?

If Lowry was a few years younger, then I would do that in a heartbeat. But he's 35 in March. So obviously he's not a long term solution. I'm actually leaning towards a no on this deal, because if those role players on our roster are going to be trade chips, then I'd rather use them in a trade for a younger player that's going to be next to Luka for years.

At this point, I honestly think tradeable contracts are more valuable to us than cap space. The more I think about it, the less confident I am in getting a real impact player via free agency. As EL has pointed out in this thread or another, the 2021 free agent class actually isn't the gold mine that we think it is. After Giannis and Holiday, there really aren't a lot of great options for us. If we're going to get a third star, I feel like it's far more likely to happen via trade than free agency. Lowry is a third star, yes, but only for a year. Either we let him walk in the summer to free up cap space, or we re-sign him and he just gets old. UNLESS the idea is to turn around and flip him for a different player. Which I suppose is possible, but still, it seems like it would be smarter just to keep the assets that we have.

My question is HOW were we offering more than the full MLE for 3 years? Were we offering a 4 year deal?

Jae Crowder confirmed to Arizona Sportsí Burns & Gambo that other teams (Dallas) were offering him more money in free agency

Seems fishy.

We were literally called at the same MLE

If you look at the outgoing players in the Johnson deal, it seems like the Mavs could have legally worked a sign and trade for Crowder (or Gallo, or anyone else) for a starting salary of up to $19.5 million.

If Crowder is telling the truth, and we have no reason to believe he'd lie, then my guess is that because he had no desire to re-sign in Miami for one year, Miami was probably pretty keen on getting Johsnon back to replace him. This concept was probably an extension of the Wright/Jackson/Ariza/Johnson deal, only with Johnson ending up in Miami, and Crowder signing in Dallas.

It could've been a one year offer at the $19.5 million number above, or maybe a 2+1 starting in the $15 million range...who knows. This also helps us understand the links between the Mavs and Gallo (OKC) and Wood (DET). Those were teams involved in the deal, too.

Personally, I like the way it turned out better, I think.

I mean, Crowder has no reason to lie, but this feels more like a pumped to be with a new team talk more than anything. It's easy to be like "yeah, I took less money to be with you, cuz I'm all about the Suns!" on the first day of camp.

But if true, then I'm perplexed as to why the Mavs would even consider offering that kind of money...esp after just drafting Green.

I like the way it turned out better too. Not a huge Crowder fan as I stated above, and heís always got some drama around him. He may be a low-key weird dude.

LeBron James wanted Luka Doncic to be first member of 'Team LeBron'

DALLAS (105.3 The Fan) - Lebron James is such a big fan of Luka Doncic that he wanted the Mavericks all-star guard to be the first member of his new team at Nike called "Team LeBron."

https://twitter.com/ItsShowTimeMimi/...51526890598400

"Luka is one of my favorite players in the NBA today. For the simple fact of, the way I play the game is exactly how I love the way he plays the game. Team first, gets his guys involved, if you challenge me to score, Iím gonna score. And at the same time, Iím gonna score, but at the same time, Iím gonna keep my guys involved, but I play for the team, and Iím gonna play with a sense of joy. When Luka was going through his contract negotiations with Nike, and you saw him at one point he would wear Jordans, and started wearing the other brands on his feet during practicesÖ I wanted to begin Team LeBron and have Luka as my first signing with Nike," James said on the Road Trippin' Podcast. "This is what I wanted, and I donít believe my guys at Nike were ready for that. Obviously they were not, because he ended up going to Jordan, and I donít even know if Luka knows this, but he would know it now. I wanted Luka to be the first signing of Team LeBron when he was going through his situation. And it didnít happen, heís still under the same umbrella of Nikeís with Jordan, but I wanted him to be (with Team LeBron), and thatís how much I believe in him, and I feel like its going to haunt me a little bit. But I wanted him to be my guy, I wanted him to be my first guy because I just love what he stands for. I love everything about him both on the court and off the court. Heís just a great guy. "

Well, it's really important to note (and I say this often, dating all the way back to when Crowder was drafted) that even though he's 6'6", CROWDER IS A 4. Fans always look at his size and assume THEIR team will play him at the 3 if they get him (or even the 2, lol), but he has consistently been a positive as 4, and that's his best position, by far.

Look at who the Mavs targeted:

Gallo (4)
Covington (4)
Crowder (4)
Wood (I'd argue that he's mostly a 5, but you could talk yourself into him playing 4 a bit)

And they ended up with Johnson (4).

So, I doubt they saw him as redundant with Green (wing - 2/3) in any way, tbh. But, I'm still glad things worked out the way they did.

Well in that case, I'm even more glad that didn't happen. Think I remember he was like 6'4 without shoes.

Yes, he is VERY small for his position. He makes up for it with a high motor and a lot of heart, but he's not the prototypical ideal at all.

Luka Doncic recruiting Nikola Jokic to join Mavs?

ďI canít trade anyone,Ē Doncic coyly responds when asked about the possibility of playing with Jokic. ďItís not my job. If Jokic wants to come over, he should come over. He knows he wants to.Ē

Keith Smith: Just finished my first round of cap space projections for the 2021 NBA offseason. I project 9 teams to have cap space: 1. Knicks – $63.8M 2. Spurs – $52.9M 3. Thunder – $43.6M 4. Mavericks – $34.4M 5. Heat – $26.9M 6. Raptors – $26.9M 7. Cavaliers – $23.9M 8. Charlotte – $21.2M 9. Bulls – $17.2M 2 days ago –

The Giannis dream is still alive for the moment. If he does take the supermax with Milwaukee though, who is even left in the summer?

The storied 2021 free agency class is actually shaping up to be pretty frigging dull outside of Giannis. A lot of the bigger names have already come off of the market. We seriously might be looking at a summer where the biggest names available are Rudy Gobert and Mike Conley... goodie?

Pretty sure Heat and Raptors could get to his max if they needed to though.

Yeah, I didn't imagine for a second that we're the only suitors for Giannis. I'm saying he might be only particularly noteworthy free agent in what was supposed to be one of the greatest free agent classes ever.

I here in nyc let me tell that nee front office here is actually doing a good job for first time in 20ys. Stockpiling picks and not making foolish signs.
Basically another tank yr . Dolan approved a tank yr to get Cunningham. As long as he see player development from players rest of yr.
This is best player development staff knicks ever had in a coaching staff gonna be interesting yr.

Huh, apparently WCS is a painter, and judging by what's shown here, a pretty good one too.

J Rich is practicing and with team but probably still a few days or a week away from coming back. He hasn’t practiced in two weeks and will take some time to get back in the rhythm. That’s tough for a guy who is also just trying to learn to be a Mav. He will not play tomorrow according to Brad, but may play one of the Utah games or maybe right after. Maybe 1-5 games until he returns.

DFS and Powell are probably going to get cleared to practice this week and can maybe start playing early Feb. Both are asymptomatic and just need some negative tests and then some time to work their way back. We're talking maybe 4-10 games until they can play.

Sounds like Kleber got absolutely clobbered by Covid. Everyone I’m hearing is saying that he may be even longer. Apparently he’s still got symptoms and is still sick in bed. That really sucks as he’s our 2nd best defender, one of our best rebounders, and our best three-point shooter. I'd be thrilled if he came back by mid-Feb. Poor guy is really sick.

This isn’t going to be a short absence. All these guys haven’t played in almost three weeks and Some will take 3-5 more weeks to get back in live games.

What a joke of a season. But OlyMpIcS! Seriously, was it really worth nearly (and maybe will happen anyway) destroying your product/league because of the Olympics?

Totally agree. The Olympics are the most overrated thing ever. I literally never much a second of it. Itís one giant Bob Costas puff piece.

I think they also wanted the XMas $. And to start next season on time? Idk, whatever the factors itís a mess.

And it's all because they are in the same boat together of TV contracts which fans/people are becoming more and more aware of in a pretty negative way. But is it worth destroying one thing for the other?

Cracks me up to no end how many Mavs fans on social media want Andre Drummond.

He. Will. Not. Work. With. KP. The last two free angecies should have already put something like this to rest. Mavs had no interest in putting someone like Vucevic next to KP.

Aaron Gordon should be the target IMO.

I think it's because one person starts the trumpet for someone like Drummond and then others latch on. They really don't know how that wouldn't work in Dallas and are just going off what others are saying. Yes, the guy puts up good numbers, but people don't think about how those players fit into a team.

@townbrad

Carlisle says 3 of the 4 protocol players, Powell, Finney-Smith and Richardson are making progress. Still a chance of getting one or 2 back this week.

Everyone but Kleber have recovered and were in attendance tonight. Looks like they will have about a week until they can play and then we’ll have almost a full roster. Could be Feb 1 which means 3 more games?

Also Kleber is sick as a dog. Still getting his butt kicked. Prayers for him.
