I mean, we lost, but also we had a decent game without our two stars.

What other team wins without their top two players?>

Nope. THJ had to stick his little dick out. That's easily his 5th terrible shot tonight.

BTW in that win over Miami he scored 18 points on 6/18 shooting and it's become so bad with him that the local media in Dallas considered that a good game.

Defense, no, everything around the rim continues to be an issue
Before tonight’s game, the Mavericks were giving up a league-worst 71% of attempts around the rim. That stat did not improve tonight, as the Bulls were able to get pretty much whatever they wanted in the paint. Each of the Mavericks front court options had their own set of problems defensively.

Powell in particular was torched at the rim, continuing his trend of being statistically the worst defender at the rim by far among starting centers (81.3% opponent field goal percentage at the rim).

Why though. Luka is younger and Giannis has proven he can't deliver in the playoffs. Although yeah there's no one else but I'm not taking Giannis over Luka.

I can't believe I have to say this, but...

1) This is a place for Mavs fans who want the Mavs to succeed. We want to have a happy community, even during losses. Please don't make this a pity party or use every post to attack players and coaches.

2) This is a place for respect. Please don't attack other posters of insult their opinions, as ill-informed as they may be. Respect them by making arguments or by simply moving on, not by calling opinions stupid.

well, maybe its time to get Tyler Bey some minutes along the way. He is supposed to be a very good defender, yeah, I know he's green. he might be the next very good player on our team, but i am afraid if we don't get these young guys some minutes along the way, we are going to give them away at a low value, without knowing what we have, and/or we won't develop them, we will keep putting out the same ol no defense bigs with Powell, etc. Personally, i'd like to see all 4 rookies get some minutes. that's probably not going to happen much, unless our team is really bad, and we miss the playoffs. Let's hope that doesn't happen,

Did I read that correct: Powell has the worst defense in the league, based on this statistic? Rick plays him if we want to lose

Edit - OK - I re-read that twitter post: it appears that: DFS #1 (81%), and Powell #2 (79%).

Is this because Powell has never been a good defender, so we kinda knew that. And maybe DFS is a good (or at least decent) defender at the 3, but not at the 4. This has been raised before.

Defensive rating after 6 games
1 - Green
2 - Johnson
3 - WCS
4- Brunson
5- Boban
6 - Powell
7 - THJ
8 - DFS
9 - Richardson
10 - Burke
11- Doncic
12 - Kleber

I'd look at DBPM but it's not updated yet.

OK thanks. WCS and Johnson should play more, Powell less. Maybe Boban should play more. Green should definitely get some minutes, maybe at the expense of THJ and Burke.

JRich - often defends the other teams best player.

Also, as Lavine was going all MJ on us last night, esp. first half, am I the only one who was thinking - "why not put Green on Lavine?" he might actually slow him down.

They actually have four of the 5 starters that are amongst the 10 worst in that stat.

Luka and THJ are both on that list as well.

I think the problem is despite our bigger wing acquisitions we are still playing small ball because Powell is at C and DFS is playing the PF and he's just 6'7.

DFS is better off at SF and defending smaller players. He's not a rim protector or rebounder and then when you pair him up with Powell that just compounds the situation.

I think quite a few fans have voiced their concerns with these small lineups all last year. They simply don't work and yet RC will go to hell and back trying to make it work.

For example I'm willing to bet half the fans on this board realize that Powell can't defend Woods but guess what we'll get for 20+ minutes tonight Powell on Woods. Some fans will point out that we don't have any other options to defend him except with Powell. My argument is WCS or Kleber despite being backups and not perfect are both still better options than Powell.

I'd even go a step further and say play some zone defense but apparently that's no longer an option in Dallas either.

I've beaten this horse to death for at least the past couple of years. It is what it is. As long as we have this amazing HOF coach who guided the mavs to a title 10 years ago, it's going to be what it's going to be. Heck, McCarthy has managed to milk 15+ more years and counting as an NFL head coach since his Superbowl win. Rick's got at least another 5 years of small ball dreaming of a 6'7" center out there out-statting the other team. Yeah, I'm deflated. :-/

On the positive side, somebody has to score points and collect stats, so let's take advantage of this and hope Brunson can keep stacking the stat sheet. Then, when Luka comes back, let's sell Brunson high for an upgrade. If we can do that, then that just leaves us with Powell, DFS, and THJ to move.

Rick costs us some games...no question about it.

But you know, so do the players who are on the floor. Problem is that Powell isn't the only issue. THJ and DFS are just unreliable. It's the same problem we have every season. You just can't rely on the B squad. Never know who is going to show up.

Part of the problem is actually having just acquired J-Rich. See, you could bring Curry off the bench last season, but Rich needs to start because of his defense. That means either THJ or DFS are going to need to come off the bench to cure the size issue. And we saw what kind of player THJ was when he came off the bench.

Is this a chicken or egg question? RC puts the players on the floor. He has input, I would hope, as far as team makeup and composition. I just haven't seen anything encouraging for several years - at least 3, if not 4. I continue to see headscratching combos, rotations, and the people who get the lionshare of the minutes at times have me just beaten down. Honestly, I'll give the Mavs until the 15 game mark. If there aren't any dramatic lineup and rotation changes made, then you can stick a fork in this team. I think they will be done for the season.

Both THJ and DFS should come off the bench.
I would start: Luka, JRich, Green, JJ, WCS. For example, tonight - Green you defend/shut down Harden. JRich- you got Wall. JJ is one of the best defenders (inside). Bring Powell, Kleber, THJ, DFS, Burke and Brunson off the bench. I might play Powell and THJ very little. I think Green can give y you as much offense as THJ has provided, but more efficient, and light years better defense. Green on Lavine last night (instead of THJ) would have been a win.

I'd take Giannis, Steph, or AD for Luka. I love Luka, don't get me wrong. How could anyone not like him? I think his greatest skill for a point guard is his rebounding, not his shooting or play making. He's got to improve his decision making and free throw shooting. And it would help if he had team mates who don't stand around and watch while he dribbles the ball, but rather would move without the ball, cut stronger to the rim, set better picks, etc., but that is partly a coaching issue.

Steph?! 32?! This is a crazy and wild opinion. You're certainly entitled to one but the dude is 11 years older than Luka, thats bonkers bro.

Also, I'm going to disagree that Luka best skill is rebounding. He is an elite playmaker with elite vision and anticipation. More than Curry, even with 7 or 8 years more experience. I will definitely agree that his decision making regarding taking silly 3s needs to improve.

AD and Gianni's are more viable but I wouldn't do either one straight up.
