Default Draft Luck

Teams like Philadelphia, Oklahoma City, Charlotte, L.A. Lakers, and Cleveland have had far better luck than the rest of the league in the draft. Philadelphia has moved up 19 spots collectively in 20 draft appearances. They have moved up more spots collectively than any other franchise.

Then on the other end we have teams like Minnesota, Dallas, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, and Miami Heat who have terrible luck. They have been moving down. Minnesota has moved down 16 spots collectively.

Is it time for the NBA to recognize this and come up with a fix? I think there should be an adjustment to how many balls each team gets based off their draft history. It just doesn't make any sense for Dallas to have such bad luck every year. They're doing something that doesn't make sense.

I can see there being plenty of opposers for this, but I don't trust the current system.

Going by record erases any ambiguity or claims of being rigged. The lottery system isn't preventing teams from tanking no matter the tweaks. And the teams that got the top picks all sucked anyway. Going by record allows teams to properly scout and prepare earlier as well versus waiting for some ridiculous lottery night a month after the season ends.

An entire franchise shouldn't hinge on luck.

I will also add that teams that purposely try to get the worst record will get met with media and fan scrutiny, so I don't agree about them getting "rewarded" for being bad. Even if the Knicks got Zion, they are still a dumpster fire and terribly run franchise.

Just want to point out that David griffin has been the gm of a team in the lottery 5 times. His team has won 4 times(twice when a ridiculous long shot to do so) clearly he has made a deal with the devil.

There was this chart the other day how many positions teams have moved up and down in the lottery. DAL was second to last and let's just say it was hilariously uneven. A bunch of teams had bad luck while other constantly have moved up apparently.

If that were the new way of the league...why not tank 3 or 4 years in a row and stockpile #1 picks. Then come back with Zion luka Simmons kat

You're assuming that everything comes down to GMs making obvious choices. Was Luka taken number 1? Did the Sixers make the right choice at 1 with Fultz?

Well, why the Mavs didn't get lucky like the Pelicans did...if there were a good year to move down in the lottery, this was it. So, that's kind of lucky.
