Unlike Rajon Rondo, 'Fearless' Dennis Smith Jr.'s relationship with Rick Carlisle continues to blossom
https://sportsday.dallasnews.com/dal...tinues-blossom
Quote:
By all public signs, Carlisle and Smith have the opposite kind of relationship. They often watch video together. Carlisle sometimes works individually with Smith, especially on developing floaters and pull-ups. At least twice Sunday night when Smith exited the game, Carlisle patted him on the backside.

Dennis Smith Jr. wants the ball when hes on a roll
https://www.mavsmoneyball.com/2018/3...llas-mavericks
Quote:
Smith normally plays shooting guard in these lineups, with Barea at point, but Barea always seems to look Smith off unless theres no other option. Barea made his career by making a beeline to the basket, but its occasionally maddening to watch.

DSJ already has the highest usage rate among rookies. I have no problem with RC having him play off ball with a ball dominant JJB at times to force DSJ to move and screen.

Smith is playing to his strengths more just like Powell. Attack, pass, and only shoot outside shots when the defense gives you them.

I don't really disagree, but JJ shouldn't be waiving off or ignoring DSJ if he has it going either. That isn't teaching DSJ anything except maybe that a vet is ignoring him when he shouldn't be.

Bingo. The issue isn't getting DSJ the ball more, it's getting him the ball more when he's hot... And Barea should know better at this point in his career than to ignore the hot hand. Maybe this is coming from Carlisle, but even Yogi looks for Dennis more than JJ, and he's a bit of a black hole himself.

Wait a minute...is...is that Markelle Fultz on that list? The guy who played four games this season?

We might have to implement a rule to no longer post BSPN articles.

Holy shit, you two aren't wrong. How in the hell do Fred VanFleet, Tyus Jones, Markelle Fultz, and Josh Richardson get recognition and not DSJ? I get that he wouldn't be too high on lists such as this, but those guys over him, all things considered? Wow.

We all know why Lonzo is on that list.

Kid met most expectations his rookie year for sure. 15/5/4 is about what I thought he'd do. And a steal a game isn't bad either considering he lack of knowledge on defense.

Agree on all this. Best part is you could definitely see improvement as the year went on. With one year under his belt I'm excited to see his jump to year 2. You can tell he wants to improve which might be his best trait. If he can develop a consistent jump shot... look out.

I gotta admit I was really surprised by his talent in every facet of the game. I honestly do not see any holes that cannot be overcome with just more endurance (rookie wall) and experience. But probably the thing that I like most is his desire to win. Because he has that, his entire career should be an improvement which is exactly how Dirk played. Every single time Dirk shot the ball, I fully expected it to go in. I can see myself expecting things to happen anytime DSJ gets the ball. Next year and on will most definitely be fun to watch the Mavs. Good times.

Dirk's rookie season:
8ppg
3.4rpg
1.0 apg
40.5% FG
20.6% 3pt

Dirk's sophomore season:
18ppg
7rpg
3ast
46.1% FG
37.9% 3pt

I know guards have an easier transition than bigs, but it's rare to see a rookie who doesn't have a fairly inefficient first season. That said, I am very happy with his rookie season. In Dirk's second season he doubled every stat. I could see Smith maybe not doubling and tripling his stats, but still seeing a significant statistical jump-- particularly in efficiency. We just need to go for a complementary player in the draft and make smart choices in free agency.

Smith's playmaking took a big upturn near the end of the season. Kid has an incredible euro step as well.

But I think we're in for a guy who will run the team much more efficiently next season with fewer turnovers.

No doubt. I'm curious what the coaching staff told him to work on in the offseason.

I don't understand how Jalen Rose won the Most Improved Player that year over Dirk.

The most important part of that desire to win is what Powell said the other day. Hes working on his defense and doing drills that Powell said most people dont do at all. Hes putting in beyond the effort that many NBA guys do. And this is on defense...

I think everyone started playing better defense in the last 4th of the season. You know, the Mavs don't have the talent to be a great defensive team right now, but the effort was certainly there. Powell especially was much better on rotations.

To be fair, Frank is still very young. I think he is still younger than a lot of guys coming into the 2018 draft.

That's why JJJ likely won't wow anyone next season. Guy still needs a lot of grooming before he will be a big time player. He doesn't even even turn 19 until September.

Honestly any big man they draft is going to take time. It will take at least 2 years for any of them to make a big impact.

I guess that depends on your definition of big impact because I can see Bamba making an immediate impact if he goes to the right team.

Something that’s kind of gotten lost in the excitement of DeAndre & Luka and the general craziness of this offseason is DSJ and his expected jump in his 2nd year. Small little tidbits that have me excited:

1) DSJ texted Kostas to go join him the gym right when Kostas landed in town

2) DSJ said Kostas was in there for about an hour and that he was there for about three

Can’t WAIT to see DSJ play.

Man I love DSJ. Dude just loves to play ball. Doesn't matter where or when. Hopefully Kostas is living in the gym with DSJ.

Man, I was excited about DSJ when we were gunning for Mo Bamba... Now that we have Luka and Jordan, I'm gonna have to stock up on new drawers this season.
