OJ Mayo: How he currently stacks up with the other top 10 Scorers -
11-22-2012, 08:27 AM
We all know that OJ is on a tear right now. What we don't know is how much he will cool off or how his game will be impacted by the return of #41 in a few weeks.
But here are just a few current stats on How Mayo stacks up with the rest of the league's Top 10 scorers...
Mayo is currently:
7th in Points Per Game at 22.2
Of the top 10 scorers, Mayo is playing the least minutes per game at 35.0mpg
Of the top 10 scorers, Mayo has the 3rd best field goal % at .503 (Behind only Kobe and LeBron)
Of the top 10 scorers, Mayo is 10th in shot attempts per game at 15.0pg. the next closest top scorer is Durant who takes almost 17pg, whereas Monta Ellis and Melo each take 19.2 to lead the league.
Of the top 10 scorers, Mayo is in 1st place with making and taking 3 pointers: 3.2/5.7 (*An insane %)
Of the top 10 socorers, Mayo is 2nd in free throw % at 86.2% (Behind only Durant's 88.9%) (By the way, LeBron is only currently shooting 64% from the line??!)
Just a few encouraging stats to be thankful for today.

ok, we've talked about the problem of evil, and the extent of the atonement's application, but my real question to you is, "Could Jesus dunk?"

He's the most efficient scorer in the top 10. His true shooting % is terrific (.653). Kobe's the only one who is close (.648).

15.78 shots per game was how many shots JET took in his highest scoring year as a Mav (08/09).
I would hope OJ could keep up his current rate of 15.0 per game once Dirk returns, but honestly, with Carter, Collison, Kaman, and Marion all needing shots, I'm not so sure his attempts don't slip by a couple.
I'd much rather see Carter and Kaman take fewer shots once Dirk returns than OJ...

I didn't expect him to be such a great jump shooter having watched some Memphis games the last few years.
Most of the time he is extremely accurate, even when decently defended. It also helps that he is playing with a lot of confidence, there was a three last night in the middle from way behind the line with plenty of time left on the shot clock and he just took it with very little hesitation.
I think its a given that we are going to see a decrease in his ppg when Dirk comes back, but I still would like to see him taking around 12 shots a night and scoring about 17 ppg. He is a very efficient scorer.

You know Mayo is doing something good when he is mentioned in the same post as Kobe Bryant.
I thought 4/40 after this season would get it done to keep him, but now I'm not so sure...

The fact that we have someone in the top 10 ppg WITHOUT Dirk is petty amazing.
"Dirk Nowitzki is now a household name in every locker room in this world.
You say it in Brazil, you say Dirk, they know Nowitzki. You say it in China,
they know Nowitzki. Kobe, Michael, DIRK." - Jeff Van Gundy

It's unsustainable, his ridiculous 3pt% will come back down to Earth. Still, he should be able to average around 17-18 points, on 56-57% TS, once Dirk comes back, and still have his most efficient scoring season up to date.

Dallas is bigger than OJ. If he does not want to stay in DAL, then he simply does not deserve to be here. (-> see Deron Williams )

Why wouldn't he stay? We'll have tons of cap space and the only teams who could pay him over market value are bottom-feeders, since all the competitors are pretty much maxed-out for the next few years... I'm not so sure that he'd take a little more money to put himself back into a bad situation - he's still young enough that he has to be thinking about his next two contracts, not just one.

That's not true - first of all, Kidd left us and Deron had 24 million reasons to stay in Brooklyn, so their names don't even have any business being mentioned in this debate... JET and Barea got multiple contracts while they were here in Dallas, as well as guys like Devin Harris and Josh Howard... Sure, Cuban let Chandler and Nash walk, but other than those two, he's been all kinds of willing to pony-up to keep guys here.
You win some, you lose some, but Cuban has never acted like the Dallas Mavericks franchise is bigger than the sum of its parts.

We will be entering Bizzaro Mavs World if Mayo, not Dirk, leads the team in scoring this year. Last time a non-Dirk Mav led the team in scoring was the 90's.

Well Mayo is averaging 24 ppg in the month of November...about the same as Melo, a point and a half worse than Durant, .5 points worse than Lebron James, .6 better than Harden, 2 better than Irving. So I guess it wouldn't be that surprising at this point...

Hmm...very good points, UD. It would be awesome if he stayed here and continued to play well for us. I see no reason why Mayo and even Collison can't be our backcourt for many years to come. I'm sure Collison's play will improve once Dirk gets here, I still remember the effect Dirk had with JJ when he was here. What I really want to see is OJ elevate his game up to the point that he earns his first all star berth. However, it's still very early and there's a lot of work to be done.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle recently joined Galloway & Company on KESN-FM 103.3. Here are some highlights:
On O.J. Mayo being a leader:
“You never know exactly what you’re going to get when a guy signs. You talk to him and do interviews. From a far, he looked emotionless. I always liked the way he played. He played hard, but he has a little more personality to him than you think. He’s a great worker. A lot of times on the road, and the only other guy that I know that has done this is Drk (Nowitzki), he tries to get in the arena the night before and shoot. He’s a gym rat. He wanted to be in Dallas. He wanted the challenge of stepping in there and replacing Jason Terry, (Jason) Kidd and some of the other guys. He’s taken it very seriously, and it’s something that is very admirable.

Mayo plays too passive to be a leader imo. At the start of his career, I thought he was one and it looked like he was going to be one this year, but there are times like right now against Philly when he's still playing like the 6th or 7th option in Memphis. pisses me off

1/8 from 3 point land in his last 2 games. And when that long ball isn't falling, unfortunately he can't really create anything else, as he's not a great athlete, nor has a particularly quick, and high release. Dirk really can't come back soon enough, maybe that will create space for OJ consistently, but our schedule is getting significantly tougher in december, and who knows what Dirk will be capable of in his early going. We could be looking at a record 5-6 games below .500 at the end of december.

This makes me think his long term goal would be to play point.

according to this OJ is leading the league not only in 3pt% but also in fast break points.

Marion's contract has an early termination clause according to both Hoopsworld and ShamSports. Does anyone know whether or not that's true and up to what point we could use this early termination option? It could make quite a difference to renegotiate a new deal with Marion at a lower annual salary, say 3 years at $4.5 million per.
Another question for CBA experts: If we re-signed Mayo for $10-12 million per year, would it then even be possible to sign another max player? OJ's level of success--and the money we would have to pay for him next summer--almost seems to make it less likely to sign another superstar next to him and Dirk.

I've given up on the superteam pipe dream. It works in Miami because all 3 guys decided to all play for less and Lebron and DWade are two of the top 10 players in the league. I'd rather see the mavs have a couple really good guys and a solid supporting cast and see what happens then. Im not interested in seeing how many max players we can sign then having a d league bench.
2012 Mavs featuring Dojo, Roddy, Troy Murphy, Derek Fisher, and Now Mike James!

Anyone know the teams that have capspace next summer?
I believe that even if Mayo maintains his current production, there won't be any team willing to throw any more than 8 million his way. He can absolutely play like a 10 million dollar player, but I just get the feeling that even after the season is over, he will still be undervalued in the market.

I wouldn't be shocked if Dirk was willing to take considerably less with his next contract if it meant getting some big name players in here.

Cap will be around 59mio.
With Dirk/Marion/Carter/Cunningham/Crowder/cap holds we would have around 20mio to spend. We could try to dump Marion/Carter next summer to team under the cap(throwing in talents/picks/cash) and erase their salary too. In this case we could (as example) offer Dwight max and Mayo still 10-11Mio. Or sign Dwight and Josh Smith when they wanna play on one team (they are best buddies).
A Mayo max contract would start around 14.5Mio. I dont wanna give him max but im pretty sure his pricetag is now allready 10-12Mio.
2013 will be still a kind of transition year because Dirk is blocking the cap with almost 23 Mio. And Marion with an ugly 9 mio. If we cant move Marion/Carter it probably means signing Mayo in 2013 and then the next big (max) guy just in 2014 after Dirk signs a contract in Duncan/KG range (10Mio)

Lakers continue tanking = Dwight to Dallas. Book it.
(Note: Don't actually book it. I'm kidding.)
