For the Mavs though, they needed a center as part of the package. If the choice as Martin or Butler/Haywood, then with Damp's injury situation you do the second every time. The Mavs would be horrible defensively if they had Martin right now and possibly no center at all if Gooden was part of the package.
Honestly, I take the second package ten times out of ten even if Damp is healthy. I'd take Butler straight up over Martin any day because he's a defensive contributor and his contract is a lot better. Getting Haywood on top of that makes it an absolute no-brainer.
