I'm on Team Xerxes.
I think candidates can not off themselves, and I think Richard and Linus were both candidates.
I'm leaning towards immortality for the candidates as well (to a limited degree I guess..not HEROES type immortality).
Afterall, they did survive TWO plane crashes.
