Tim Thomas is eager to return to the NBA after missing most of last season to take care of his ill wife.

He's eager to return to the Dallas Mavericks, too.

Thomas' agent, Bob Myers, told ESPNDallas.com that he and the club are working toward a new deal that would resume the 33-year-old's career in Dallas.

Although nothing has been finalized, Dallas does have two roster spots open and a need for frontcourt depth.

"We're hoping to get something nailed down to bring him back there," Myers said Saturday.

The Mavericks were excited to land Thomas last season to add experience and a proven perimeter touch to their bench. But Thomas requested and received a lengthy leave of absence so he could care for his wife and their children through Tricia Thomas' serious health issues.

Thomas sent word through team officials throughout the season that he preferred to keep the specific nature of his wife's illness private. He also praised the Mavericks for their "tremendous" support through the ordeal, paving the way for a return.

After missing the start of the 2009-10 season while recovering from knee surgery, Thomas appeared in just 18 games before leaving the team, averaging 7.5 points in 15.8 minutes.

Thomas' original deal with Dallas was a one-year contract at last season's veteran mininum of $1.3 million. The Mavericks could try to sign Thomas to a similar deal or, if necessary, use some of their $5.8 million mid-level exception to bring him back.
