Maybe it has to do with the timing of the weeks when they work a Sunday, off Monday and Tuesday, work a Wednesday, off Thursday and Friday, and then work Saturday again. Three workdays in a calendar week puts them over, as long a shift as they work.

I doubt firemen are any more cut off from the rest of the world as the rest of us schmucks. If anything, given the length of their shifts, you would guess less.
