Expiring contracts in a league where payroll will have to be shed is at a premium. Besides, Rudy at best is a 6/7th man type of player and not a starting 2-guard. He is too hot and cold. Besides, the Mavs gave up nothing for him because the coach has no use for rookies that aren't lottery picks.
I think the move was low risk-high reward. At minimum, you by another year in the development of Brewer, Beaubois and Jones.
