Only reason you do it is for money and Cuban never would.

He owns the team AND the arena. If he blows it up and we suck for 15+ years, he loses out double. As long as he sells a moderate amount of tickets he can afford to spend more than the cap without dipping into the red.

theres plenty of reason for him to make drastic roster changes around Dirk to stay competitive, but there is absolutely no reason to retool. It hurts Cuban's pride, it hurts Cuban's pocketbook, it hurts the reputation of this franchise and more than anything there is no reason to.

A fraction of those who get NBA contracts ever play important minutes. Even fewer make an impact on a game. Still fewer can consistently impact a game. Dirk is in an even more rare group of players-- maybe 1 in 500million. Teams go for decades drafting in the lottery without finding a player with an impact like he makes. You trade him away and there is no guarantee that we'd be able to find anyone even close in the near future.
